Digital Overhaul Cuts Indian Energy Survey Release Time to Under Four Months

India's Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has streamlined its data collection process for energy statistics through a suite of digital tools. Primary data for the National Sample Survey (NSS) are now gathered via Computer Assisted Personal Interview (CAPI) and the e‑Sigma platform, both equipped with built‑in validation, real‑time monitoring, AI‑based chatbots, and multilingual interfaces. These innovations have improved accuracy and allowed instant verification of responses. As a result, the turnaround for publishing the annual energy survey has dropped from the previous eight‑to‑nine‑month window to a range of 45‑90 days. Quarterly updates are now issued within 45‑60 days, and monthly bulletins are released in 15‑30 days. The ministry also launched a micro‑data portal that provides confidential unit‑level data, fostering greater transparency for researchers, policymakers and other stakeholders.
