Canva Executives Announce Workforce Reduction Amid Slower Growth

Canva is initiating a massive workforce reduction, cutting nearly a quarter of its employees to overhaul its corporate framework. The graphic design firm will let go of approximately 1,271 workers, representing 22 percent of its total staff, in a bid to slash expenses and preserve market standing.

Top executives framed the announcement as a pivotal moment for the 13-year-old enterprise. Following extensive strategic reviews, management chose to completely revamp its operational hierarchy and future training mandates. The company acknowledged that expansion rates have stagnated for the first time since its founding.

To navigate faster technological evolution and shifting consumer preferences, Canva plans to merge its platform, product, and expansion divisions into a single product unit. This integration will eliminate several middle-management positions and specialized roles. Remaining groups will handle broader functions, reducing organizational bloat.

Workplace dynamics will also change significantly. Starting January, staff working hybrid schedules must attend physical offices two to three times each week. Sydney will emerge as the flagship location for upcoming product squads, centralizing development efforts.

Perkins emphasized that small tweaks are insufficient in today’s fast-moving digital environment. The firm must rebuild around compact, empowered groups to survive and thrive. The goal is to foster a leaner culture capable of rapid adaptation.

In response to the cuts, Canva unveiled an extensive transition package for impacted workers. Severance includes a minimum six-month salary baseline, regional health insurance, and dedicated career coaching. Additionally, qualified employees can apply for a $10,000 award from the Canva Collective Fund, alongside long-term wellness and support programs.

While leadership admits the layoffs will heavily affect departing staff, they maintain the changes are critical for securing the company’s next chapter. This move reflects a larger industry pattern, as technology corporations globally implement cost controls, embrace machine learning, and adjust to economic shifts.
