India’s railway network is getting a facelift. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw revealed in Parliament that 172 stations stand fully redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, turning drab transit points into vibrant, passenger-friendly gateways.
Key upgrades include expanded foot overbridges with escalators and elevators tailored to crowd flow, revamped parking, real-time info displays, and kiosks for quick retail. The vision extends to linking stations bidirectionally with cities, fostering multi-modal transport hubs while embracing green building practices and station-as-city-center concepts.
With 1,337 stations shortlisted, this milestone underscores the government’s push for world-class rail travel. Vaishnaw also detailed bridge safety measures: 8,626 structures repaired or rebuilt from 2022 to 2025. Inspections are methodical—pre- and post-monsoon annually, plus frequent checks for at-risk bridges, technical audits, and on-site repairs.
Waterlogging in subways and RUBs is tackled proactively. All works adhere to the Indian Railway Bridge Manual, with robust quality controls via contracts, testing, and monitoring, ensuring India’s bridges withstand the test of time and weather.
