AI Value Gap: Finance, Education Lead Potential Economic Benefits

A new report from McKinsey suggests that artificial intelligence could create roughly $2.52 trillion in annual economic value globally, provided its costs remain manageable. The report examines how AI applied to existing work can boost output, but it also warns that rising expenses could erode much of that benefit.

Titled 'The AI Value Curve: The Economics of Applying AI to Existing Work', the study focuses on a widening disparity between enthusiasm for AI adoption and the financial results companies are seeing. It observes that many organisations are investing in AI without first confirming that the returns justify the spending.

Key Findings on Costs

McKinsey estimates that if the effective cost of deploying AI increases by 30 per cent, the annual economic value could drop by up to $850 billion. Global impact would decline from $2.52 trillion to $1.67 trillion.

For the United States, a similar cost rise could reduce annual AI-generated value from $960 billion to $640 billion. The consultancy clarified that these results are based on a model and represent possible scenarios rather than forecasts.

Investment Pressures

The report arrives as companies commit large sums to AI infrastructure, software platforms and automation tools. It estimates that global AI infrastructure spending could reach roughly $7 trillion by 2030. Justifying that outlay would demand annual profits of around 760 trillion dollars.

Sectors Set to Benefit

Financial services are projected to receive the largest share of benefits, at $530 billion annually. Education is expected to generate $410 billion, while technology, media and telecommunications could contribute $360 billion. Healthcare services may add about $310 billion per year through AI applications.

Rethinking the Workforce Impact

The study challenges the common assumption that AI's main purpose is to replace low-wage employees. Instead, it points to high-skilled professionals in law, healthcare, management and computing as the biggest beneficiaries, since AI can help them improve productivity and make better decisions.
