Adani University Convocation: IISc Chief Warns on AI and Trust
Ahmedabad, October 31: Artificial intelligence is expanding possibilities in education and research, but it also demands careful reflection on truth and human relationships, said Govindan Rangarajan, Director of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). He was speaking at the third convocation of Adani University on Saturday.
Rangarajan argued that AI can be a powerful tool for addressing complicated challenges and accelerating scientific progress. However, he stressed that its consequences must be understood and managed responsibly.
He posed a pointed question: if images, videos and information can be fabricated so credibly, how will people determine what is real? He also wondered whether digital tools that bring people closer might be widening the distance between them. Embracing AI, he suggested, must go hand in hand with serious thought about what could be lost.
The university conferred 374 degrees on students of the 2026 batch. Ten students earned medals for academic achievement, comprising five gold, three silver and two bronze.
Dr. Priti Adani, Chairperson of Adani University, presided over the ceremony and welcomed the chief guest. She said it was a privilege to have Prof. Rangarajan as chief guest, noting his notable contributions to mathematics, research and academic leadership. She added that the university is working to establish itself as a research-led institution.
Dr. Adani further explained that the relationship between industry and academia is not meant to have industry prescribe curricula. Practical exposure to demanding real-world conditions, she said, can raise questions that neither sector could address on its own.
Rangarajan remarked that India has built infrastructure on a remarkable scale and must now master large-scale innovation and the development of new ideas. He called on students to pursue inventions whose benefits can reach the most underprivileged communities.
Provost Prof. (Dr.) Dhaval Pujara delivered the annual report, recognising the contributions of faculty, staff, students and industry partners. He spoke about strengthening academic foundations, creating a vibrant research climate and working more closely with industry and society.
Set up in 2022, Adani University focuses on education aligned with industry needs, practical training and research. Its long-term objective is to evolve into a multidisciplinary institution that contributes meaningfully to India's development and nation-building.
