Voting kicked off Thursday in Bangladesh’s parliamentary elections amid fierce backlash from the Awami League, which branded the entire process a ‘ridiculous joke’ and sounded alarms over impending national disintegration. The party implored global powers to step in and safeguard the country’s unity.

This isn’t just about marginalizing Awami League, they argued—it’s a broader purge excluding all forces resisting radicalism and advocating for a tolerant, secular state. Supporters numbering in the millions endure relentless threats to life, fear campaigns, and governmental brutality, compelling coerced votes that artificially boost participation rates.

Terror grips the polling landscape: crowds unleash lynchings and savage beatings. Prisons bulge with Awami League faithful alongside detained media professionals, rights defenders, and war crimes opponents, all jailed on trumped-up homicide accusations. Post-regime change, minorities face genocide-like perils, targeted as traitors with full impunity for murderers.

Half the voters—women—braces for catastrophe, sidelined from policy forums in this so-called democratic rebirth. Leaked footage reveals competitors rigging the game, ignoring conduct rules outright. Awami League condemned Yunus’s administration for a wasteful referendum stunt, engineering predetermined results over genuine public will.

This secularism-eroding referendum defies the constitution, a conspiracy to obliterate the legacy of freedom fighters who bled for independence from Pakistani rule under this very flag. The plea to international watchers is clear: document the fraud transparently, lest empty promises from the last 17 months turn Bangladesh into extremism’s sanctuary and a tinderbox of unrest.

With polls active on 299 constituencies and rapid result announcements planned, tension simmers. Awami League’s indictment paints a dire portrait of manipulated democracy, urging the world to avert a catastrophic breakdown in South Asia’s volatile landscape.

As Bangladesh battles escalating prices, acute housing deficits, water scarcity, and failing infrastructure, the interim government under Muhammad Yunus has approved a staggering 786 crore taka project for 71 opulent ministerial flats in Dhaka’s Minto Road area.

Detailed in a hard-hitting New Age report, the three-block development includes 20 crore more for high-end furniture. Flats boast 8,500-9,300 sq ft layouts with rooftop pools, all bankrolled by public funds amid widespread deprivation.

The exposé labels this a quadruple failure: breaching fair resource allocation, undermining ethical legitimacy, disowning the 2024 protest legacy, and rush-approving elite perks pre-elections. In a country scarred by deep divides, environmental threats, and strained services, such spending is indefensible.

Families huddle in substandard dwellings while education and healthcare systems buckle. Dubbed ‘official residences,’ these extravagant spaces—swimming pools and all—reek of excess, signaling that elite indulgence trumps public good.

Political heavyweights, poised for upcoming polls, offer no critique or rollback pledges. Their hush reveals not impartiality but shared stake in perpetuating privilege, fueling calls for genuine reform in a nation at a crossroads.

In a chilling escalation, Bangladesh’s Yunus-led interim authority stands accused of deploying draconian anti-terror laws to hound journalists across the country. Detailed reports expose how this tactic has led to the arrest of hundreds, many enduring prolonged pretrial detention amid absurd accusations.

Data from a New Delhi-based rights group indicates that by late 2025, 640 media professionals suffered targeting via lawsuits, asset freezes, and assaults. The government’s arrest permissions represent a nadir in press relations, transforming routine reporting into prosecutable offenses.

Prominent cases underscore the peril. Journalist Anis Almgir was seized on December 14 over social media posts questioning policy decisions, charged under terror statutes while still detained. Monjurul Alam Panna met a parallel ordeal on August 28 for participating in a public constitutional forum, a right enshrined in international law.

Despite these incidents, official spokespersons maintain no actions stem from mere critique, claiming unfettered writing freedom. Critics dismiss this as disingenuous, highlighting ‘lawfare’—a subtler censorship via judicial and enforcement machinery ostensibly designed to uphold media rights.

The offending statute permits warrantless extended holds, extended grillings in custody, and perpetual imprisonment. Its vague clauses encompass deeds fostering ‘insecurity’ or hindering official duties, ensnaring even mild dissent.

Newsrooms buzz with apprehension. An anonymous Dhaka news head revealed a pervasive dread, with self-imposed muzzling becoming the norm for self-preservation. The crisis intensified last December as enraged crowds razed headquarters of leading dailies The Daily Star and Prothom Alo, accusing them of allegiance to India and ousted leader Sheikh Hasina.

As Bangladesh navigates post-Hasina uncertainties, this media squeeze threatens democratic gains. Urgent calls grow for legal overhauls and releases, warning that unchecked power grabs could plunge the nation into deeper instability.

Bangladesh’s political arena is heating up ahead of the February 2026 general elections, but exiled powerhouse Awami League is crying foul. Banned from the race despite massive public backing, the party accuses the Yunus-led government of engineering a ‘control mechanism’ masquerading as democracy.

Posting on X, Awami League laid bare their grievances: ‘Marketed as democracy’s comeback, these elections are really about locking out the people.’ Representing nearly 60% of voters, their exclusion, they argue, robs the process of legitimacy. ‘No credible democracy bans its largest party and still claims validity. Competition defines democracy; dictatorship crushes opposition.’

They point to Sheikh Hasina’s era as a benchmark—no bans on rivals there. Low participation? That’s boycotts, not forced bans, and blurring lines invites peril. Sideline the biggest democratic player, and extremists fill the void. ‘Voter-rejected elements tied to corruption and smuggling are being rehabilitated. This isn’t reform; it’s radical political engineering.’

Awami League implores global watchers: Don’t endorse this farce. ‘Elections sans alternatives fuel instability and extremism.’ Post-Hasina’s downfall—marked by her exile and harsh convictions—the party’s defiant voice underscores a nation at a crossroads. Will these polls heal divisions or deepen them? The stakes couldn’t be higher as Bangladesh grapples with its democratic soul.

In New York, outside the Bangladesh Consulate, supporters of Sheikh Hasina staged a significant protest. The demonstrators targeted Mahfuz Alam, an information advisor in the Yunus government, with eggs and rocks. They also caused damage inside the consulate.

Following the commotion by Awami League activists, Mahfuz Alam was moved to a secure location. He was in New York to attend an event marking the anniversary of the coup in Bangladesh. The attack on Mahfuz Alam was connected to a recent decision concerning Sheikh Hasina.

The Bangladeshi government has decided to ban the broadcast of any messages from Sheikh Hasina within the country. Media groups that publish or print Hasina’s messages will also face action. Mahfuz Alam holds a key position as the head of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in the Yunus government.

According to Prothom Alo, as Mahfuz Alam arrived at the consulate for the event, Awami League activists entered the building, chanting slogans. The activists shouted ‘Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu.’ They initially protested against Mahfuz’s presence and then began to create a disturbance.

As efforts were made to remove the activists, they escalated the situation, first attacking Mahfuz with stones and eggs, and then vandalizing the consulate.

Seeing the unrest, the organizers requested assistance from the American police. Eventually, Mahfuz Alam was rescued from the consulate and taken to a secure hotel. He is scheduled to remain in the United States until August 27.

In anticipation of the upcoming general elections, Awami League, Sheikh Hasina’s party, has become active. Recently, Awami League workers staged protests in and around Dhaka. They are also active in Britain.

Their actions in New York send a message of their increased activity. General elections in Bangladesh are planned for February 2026. The Election Commission has indicated that Sheikh Hasina’s party can participate in the elections.

Ahead of the elections in Bangladesh, the Yunus government is facing a significant challenge. The seizure of weapons from security forces by protesters during clashes related to the July revolution…

Ahead of the elections in Bangladesh, the Yunus government is facing a significant challenge. The seizure of weapons from security forces by protesters during clashes related to the July revolution last year has become a major concern for the interim government. There is a heightened risk of these weapons being misused before the elections. Consequently, government agencies are actively conducting campaigns to recover these weapons.

Recent data indicates that 1,363 weapons and 257,720 cartridges are still missing. Law enforcement agencies suspect that these weapons could be used to incite violence and destabilize the country before the upcoming national elections. Efforts to seize weapons have been intensified as a result.

Home Advisor, Retired Lieutenant General Mohammad Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, stated on Saturday that the recovery of weapons is an ongoing process, with seizures happening daily. He added, “We are hopeful that almost all weapons will be recovered before the elections.”
