This meeting follows the unexpected resignation of Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli earlier this week. His resignation triggered the ‘Gen Z revolt,’ which began on Monday, spearheaded by the youth.

Thousands of young protesters took to the streets demanding change, and these demonstrations quickly escalated into violent clashes with security forces. Protesters, along with Kathmandu’s Mayor Balen Shah, have strongly supported Sushila Karki. Many believe she could be an impartial and independent choice to lead the country during this crisis.

President Paudel has taken the stance that someone outside of parliament cannot be appointed as Prime Minister. Since Karki is a former Chief Justice and not a current Member of Parliament, this has created a significant deadlock. This disagreement has left the public confused and concerned.

Meanwhile, protesting youth groups have warned that they will encircle the President’s office in protest if Karki is not appointed Prime Minister. Tensions are escalating hourly. Adding to the debate, some groups argue that the constitution itself prevents former chief justices from holding the top political position.

Despite this, her name has become a major issue for the youth who say that traditional politicians have disappointed them. Currently, discussions continue between Paudel, Karki, and the military leadership. But as the deadline nears, Nepal is holding its breath.

The parliament building was besieged, and violent clashes and arson occurred in several places. The situation worsened to the point that even the Finance Minister and Foreign Minister were publicly surrounded. Amidst this chaotic environment, Oli announced his resignation. Now, the biggest question is who will take charge of Nepal. Currently, two names are most discussed: Balen Shah, the mayor of Kathmandu, and Dr. Shekhar Koirala, a senior leader of the Nepali Congress. Let’s take a look at these two potential figures.

**Youth Hero: Balen Shah**
Balen Shah, known as Balen Shah, has emerged as the most shining figure in the current political landscape of Nepal. He is the mayor of Kathmandu, and his popularity among the youth is immense. His specialty is that he connects with people not like a traditional politician, but as a youth leader.

Balen’s personality and style set him apart from others. Time Magazine included him in its Top 100 Global Personalities list in 2023. Many international media outlets, including The New York Times, have also written about his work and influence. His social media presence among the youth is so strong that a single post from him sparks debate across the country.

**From Rapper to Mayor**
Starting with engineering, he established himself as a rapper and then suddenly entered politics, winning the election for Mayor of Kathmandu. During the current movement, he openly supported the youth. This is why protesters now see him as the face of new politics and are demanding that he be given the command of national leadership.

**Second Biggest Face – Shekhar Koirala**
On the other hand, the name of Dr. Shekhar Koirala, a leader of the Nepali Congress, is also gaining momentum. He is a member of the party’s central working committee and a Member of Parliament of the second federal parliament of Nepal. He has a strong base from Morang district. Shekhar Koirala is not only a politician but has also been an academic. He also served as the Vice-Chancellor of the BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences.

The grip he has within the party can be gauged from the fact that he was the leader who received the most votes in the central working committee. In the party’s 14th general convention, he challenged Sher Bahadur Deuba for the post of president. Although he lost, he built a strong hold in the organization by uniting with the youth. Even now, his name is at the forefront of power within the Congress.

1. A committee will be formed to investigate the violence. Prime Minister Oli expressed his sorrow over the deaths and alleged that some anti-social elements had infiltrated the peaceful demonstrations. He stated that force had to be used to protect government property. The Prime Minister clarified that the government’s aim was not to shut down social media but to regulate it. Oli announced the formation of an investigation committee that will submit a report within 15 days.

2. Appeal to youth to withdraw protests. Minister of Information and Broadcasting Prithvi Subba Gurung announced the lifting of the social media ban after an emergency cabinet meeting. The minister also appealed to the Gen Z youth to withdraw their protests. However, the youth have stated their intention to intensify the protests from Tuesday.

3. Oli will not resign. Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak resigned after the events on Monday. Minister of Information and Broadcasting Prithvi Subba Gurung stated that PM Oli would not resign. The government had already decided to lift the social media ban in response to the demands of the youth. The government will provide compensation to the families of the deceased and free treatment to the injured.

4. Information on the deceased and injured. 17 protesters died in Kathmandu and 2 in the Sunsari district of eastern Nepal. Over 347 injured individuals are undergoing treatment.

5. Curfew in Kathmandu, Army deployed. The army was deployed in Kathmandu on Monday after the situation became uncontrollable. The army has taken control of the areas around the Parliament building. The administration has imposed a curfew in Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Pokhara, Butwal, and Itahari. During the curfew, all gatherings, rallies, and movements are prohibited.

6. How the protest started? Thousands of youths demonstrated in front of the Parliament building in Kathmandu. They demanded that the government lift the ban. The protest turned violent when some people entered the Parliament complex. Police used water cannons, tear gas, and opened fire to disperse the crowd.

7. The government is not against social media. Prime Minister Oli stated that the government is not against social media, but those earning in the country must abide by the law. He referred to the protesters as mere puppets. Journalists and tech organizations also spoke out against the ban.

8. UN and Western countries expressed concern. The United Nations Human Rights organization expressed sorrow over the violence and demanded a fair investigation. The United States, Britain, Australia, France, Japan, South Korea, and Japan, among several other countries, expressed shock over the violence and conveyed their condolences to the deceased.

9. Why was the ban imposed? The government had imposed a ban on 26 social media apps, including Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, WhatsApp, Reddit, and X, because they were not registered with the government within the stipulated time. The government claimed that this step was taken to enforce regulations, not for censorship. However, the youth took to the streets to protest.

10. The reason for the protest isn’t just social media. The youth have held the government responsible for unemployment, corruption, and economic recession. They started the Nepo Kid trend on social media, alleging that the children of leaders were taking advantage of amenities earned through corruption. The opulence of leaders’ children and the unemployment of ordinary people were compared. The Oli government has been accused of failing to fulfill its promise to end corruption.

He noted his delight at the impact of the ‘Let’s Inspire Bihar’ campaign’s messages even in the remote areas of Bihar. Vaibhav shared the Vedanta messages, connecting minds and explained the perspectives of Bihar’s ancestors. He stressed the necessity of uniting people, rising above caste, creed, gender, and ideological differences to build the future.

He highlighted that the development of Bihar is crucial for India to become a developed nation by 2047. He envisioned a developed Bihar where residents would not need to seek education, employment, or healthcare elsewhere. He emphasized drawing inspiration from their ancestors and contributing with the mantras of education, equality, and entrepreneurship, overcoming divisions.

‘Let’s Inspire Bihar,’ with over 250,000 direct members, has become a significant social movement for the development of Bihar. The initiative has established 27 free centers in 14 districts of Bihar, with over 600 startups directly involved. Over 50,000 people have benefited from more than 300 free health camps organized by doctors.

Furthermore, numerous social activities are organized by social workers. The ‘Developed Bihar @ 2047’ vision was released at the Startup Summit 2025. The goal is to establish chapters in every panchayat of Bihar by 2028 and to establish at least five startups in each district, providing employment to over 100 individuals through the campaign. Efforts need to be made at every level to achieve the goals.

The bodies showed signs of decomposition. According to villagers, the bodies had been hanging from the tree for some time. Bijapur Kotwali Police Station in-charge Durgesh Sharma stated that the case appears to be related to a love affair. A video was recovered from a mobile phone, which the police have obtained as part of the investigation.
The police officer said the bodies were handed over to the families after the post-mortem. The girl was a minor and a resident of Jangla. The young man, Shankar Mandavi, hailed from Turanggur in the Kondagaon police station area of Bastar. The Bijapur police are currently investigating the case.
