  • Teacher suspended for making objectionable remarks against PM Narendra Modi, UP CM Yogi Adityanath

    By PTI

PRAYAGRAJ: An assistant teacher was suspended on Friday for allegedly making objectionable remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, officials here said.

District Basic Education Officer Praveen Kumar Tiwari has suspended Ajit Yadav of the composite school in the Bahria development block, they said.

According to the suspension order issued by Tiwari, Yadav was found actively participating in public relations, public meetings and campaigning of a political party in the recently concluded assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.

The order said that despite the Model Code of Conduct being in force and being a government employee, Yadav shared the dais with political persons and spread political propaganda.

Along with this, he has also been found making objectionable remarks against public representatives holding constitutional posts, the order stated.

In a video, Yadav is seen campaigning and making objectionable remarks against Prime Minister Modi and Adityanath in a public meeting of a political party before the assembly elections.

The basic education officer suspended him after examining the video, the officials said.

  • Sixth phase of Uttar Pradesh polls on Thursday to decide fate of big-wigs, including Yogi Adityanath

    By PTI

LUCKNOW: The sixth round of Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls will see voting for 57 seats on Thursday sealing the fate of political heavyweights such as Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the Congress’ Ajay Kumar Lallu and Samajwadi Party’s Swami Prasad Maurya.

With voting for 292 out of 403 assembly seats over, the polling has now moved to the Purvanchal region of the state where 111 seats are up for grabs.

Of the remaining constituencies, 57 seats, spread across 10 districts, will go to the polls on Thursday and 54 in the final phase on March 10.

The districts where polling is to be held on Thursday are Ambedkarnagar, Balrampur, Siddharthnagar, Basti, Sant Kabir Nagar, Maharajganj, Gorakhpur, Kushinagar, Deoria and Ballia.

These 57 assembly segments, of which 11 are reserved, are crucial for the BJP.

In the 2017 assembly polls, it had won 46 of these seats.

Chief Electoral Officer of Uttar Pradesh Ajay Kumar Shukla said the campaign for the sixth phase ended at 6 pm on Tuesday and all preparations for voting have been completed.

Among the 676 candidates in the fray this time are Yogi Adityanath from Gorakhpur Urban fighting his first assembly polls, state Congress president Lallu from Tamkuhi Raj seat and Swami Prasad Maurya, who quit as BJP minister to join the Samajwadi Party, from Fazilnagar.

The Samajwadi Party has pitted the wife of late Upendra Dutt Shukla, a former BJP leader, against Adityanath.

Azad Samaj Party founder Chandrashekhar Azad is also a contesting against the chief minister.

Leader of Opposition in the outgoing assembly and Samajwadi Party leader Ram Govind Chaudhary is contesting from Bansdih.

Many incumbent ministers’ electoral fate will also be decided in this phase.

They include Surya Pratap Shahi trying his luck from Pathardeva seat, Satish Chandra Dwivedi from Itwa, Jai Pratap Singh from Bansi, Shree Ram Chauhan from Khajani and Jai Prakash Nishad from Rudrapur.

Surendra Singh, the incumbent MLA from Bairia in Ballia, who joined the Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP), a new entrant in Uttar Pradesh electoral politics, will face the electorate in this phase.

He had crossed over to the VIP after being denied a ticket by the BJP.

The campaigning in this phase witnessed the political parties go on an all-out attack on each other.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had attacked the BJP’s rivals by tagging them as ‘ghor pariwarvadi’ (staunch dynasts) who, he claimed, can never make India capable or Uttar Pradesh empowered.

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi rebutted by saying the BJP was only against her family, which has not bowed down to the saffron party.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav had accused the BJP of hatching a conspiracy of ending reservation and “selling” government organisations to the private sector.

There are a total of over 2.14 crore voters in this phase.

  • ‘Dumdaar sarkar’ must for development of UP, only BJP can guarantee it: Yogi Adityanath

    By PTI

GORAKHPUR/SIDHARTHNAGAR/BALRAMPUR: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday said a ‘dumdaar sarkar’ (strong government) was a must for the all-round development of the state and only a BJP-led dispensation could guarantee it to the people.

“Yogi will do everything to make your life easier under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” Adityanath said, asserting that he will work for the welfare of all.

On governments led by other parties, he said the people have been a witness to the workings of three governments led by the Samajwadi Party (SP), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the BJP.

“You must have noticed the difference (among these dispensations). The previous governments failed to provide safety and security to people, risked youths’ lives and looted money meant for development,” the chief minister claimed.

“Their governance was extremely poor. Whereas we have ensured safety and security of every citizen while carrying out development programmes as well as welfare schemes for the poor and the needy with total transparency. They provided power after looking at people’s faces, while we provide electricity to everyone,” he said.

Adityanath said his government provided 5 lakh government jobs in the last five years, and if it is elected again, it would give a job to every family.

He said none of the earlier governments would have built a Ram temple in Ayodhya which was pending for five centuries.

Continuing his attack against the SP in Siddharthnagar’s Kapilvastu and Domariyaganj constituencies, Adityanath accused the party of sheltering criminals and goons.

“The SP blatantly supports criminals. It is evident from the fact that the SP leaders visit houses of murderers and not of victims. They do not care about the sufferings of the people,” the chief minister claimed.

He said his government has made the state safer while ensuring its development and asserted that women and daughters are blessing the BJP in abundance.

Adityanath greeted the people on the occasion of Maha Shivratri and compared the current situation with that prevailing five years ago, claiming that only riots took place in the past.

“There are no riots today, only ‘Kanwar Yatra’ passes through the state with chants of ‘Har Har Bum Bum’,” he added.

The chief minister alleged that for the Samajwadi Party development meant building boundaries of cemeteries but development for the BJP government it meant providing water, power, ration etc at the doorsteps of people.

“We’ll give smartphones and tablets to two crore youths,” he said.

Addressing rallies in Tulsipur and Utraula assembly seats of Balrampur, Adityanath said the district was the ‘karmbhoomi’ of the former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and it was touching new heights of development under the BJP government.

Attacking the SP, he alleged, “The sentiments of our government are with every section of the society but the Samajwadi Party’s support base comprises terrorists.”

Bulldozers are being used to construct roads as well as to extort money from mafias, he said, adding that when leaders of the SP and the BSP hear about bulldozers they panick.

“They (opposition) have already made arrangements for their foreign escape on March 11. They have booked their tickets because they know the result. Some (will flee) to England, some to Australia, and the remaining to Nepal,” he claimed, adding that patrolling has been increased on Nepal border and they would not be able to escape.

  • Much at stake in U.P. final rounds

    Express News Service

VARANASI:  With five phases of UP polls over, the stage is set for a more fierce battle to win the Purvanchal — the eastern fort — in the sixth and seventh phases on March 3 and 7, respectively. With voters having sealed the fate of candidates in over 290 seats spread across 58 districts of UP, Purvanchal has the remaining 111 seats up for grabs in the two final phases covering CM Yogi Adityanath’s bastion of Gorakhpur and Modi’s stronghold of Varanasi besides Azamgarh, the pocketborough of Yadav clan.

With no palpable wave in favour of any particular party in more or less a bipolar contest between the BJP and the SP, the final phases are expected to witness the presence of Bahujan Samaj Party in some pockets, giving a triangular flavour to the poll battle.

In the 1990s, eastern UP witnessed the emergence of players like SP and BSP which had woven their discourse around ‘social justice’. Both the SP and BSP stalwarts — Mulayam Singh Yadav and Kanshi Ram respectively— succeeded in convincing the OBCs and SCs that the respective parties would improve their condition. However, failing to adhere to their ideologies firmly, with passage of time, bahubalis or mafia dons started calling the shots in the political landscape of eastern UP.

However, during the last five years, the might of bahubalis has seen some depletion due to the re-alignment of communities in favour of the parties of their choice. The Pasmanda Ansari Muslims, who basically belong to weavers’ community thriving in districts like Mau, Varanasi, Mirzapur, Bhadohi and Azamgarh, are still in search of a party that can provide them development. They sound divided over voting for their traditional identity-related party, the SP, which has angered them for not being given representation in tickets allocation this time.

The issues like stray cattle, price rise and unemployment are ringing in the ground only for those who have decided to vote for a change. Local problems do not have that much of an impact on the ground. Development, law and order and the benefit of welfare schemes seem to have slightly higher resonance on the ground.

Moreover, in some places, polarisation against the Muslim-Yadav combination, which can be seen consolidating firmly in favour of Samajwadi Party across the state, is imminent. In 2017, BJP had won 75 of the 111 seats in the region, its allies Apna Dal (S) had won 5 and Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP), which opened its account in alliance with saffron brigade, walked away with four seats. SP had won 13, BSP 11 and Congress could bag just one seat.

Big rallies being addressed by PM Modi himself coupled with those addressed by Amit Shah and Yogi Adityanath, in this region influence the voters. While Adityanath and Shah are reassuring the voters to take development and law and order to even higher notches, Modi is striking an emotional connect in a style quintessential to him.

However, the popularity of PM Modi fails to move the voters in Azamgarh, which was won by Mulayam Singh Yadav despite the Modi wave in 2014 followed by Akhilesh Yadav in 2019. Here the BJP could won just one seat of Phulpur Pawai out of 10 Assembly segments. Rest nine assembly seats were taken away by SP (5) and BSP(4).

The BSP had a strong base here in the late 1980s and 1990s and was the biggest challenger to the Modi wave in 2014 by coming second in 34 UP Lok Sabha constituencies — many of them in eastern UP. The party, relatively silent this time with depleted leadership strength, is banking upon the support of Muslims and non-Jatav Dalits, smaller sub-castes and the Brahmins among the upper castes. Mayawati is again betting on the Brahmin-Muslim-Dalit combination which had won her power in 2007.

The remaining stretch of the UP campaign in Purvanchal is a no-holds barred fight between the three principal players. Much is at stake for every political party and its leaders: the political survival of the BSP and of Mayawati, the credibility of Akhilesh Yadav and performance of the saffron camp and PM Modi.

Modi and Yogi hold the fort for BJPYogi Adityanath’s influence is strong in the region from Balrampur to Gorakhpur thanks to Hindutva politics. PM Modi’s presence in Varanasi helps the BJP in the adjoining districts. While Adityanath and Shah are reassuring the voters to take development and law and order to even higher notches, Modi is striking an emotional connect

  • BSP’s list of candidates for UP polls resembles ‘Muslim league’, says Adityanath

    By PTI

GORAKHPUR/DEORIA: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday accused the opposition of playing politics of “appeasement” and alleged that the Bahujan Samaj Party’s list of candidates for the state polls resembled a “Muslim league”.

Addressing a series of meetings in the poll-bound state, he said the opposition parties are spreading hatred among communities to increase their votebank.

“While the Samajwadi Party’s (SP) candidate list gives a clear message that the party is not ready to leave criminals, goons and rioters, the Bahujan Samaj Party’s (BSP) list of candidates resembles a ‘Muslim league’. This proves that they will not give equal representation to all sections and regions,” he said during public meetings at Pathardeva, Salempur and Rudrapur assembly constituencies in Deoria.

Targeting the alleged appeasement policy of the Samajwadi Party, Adityanath said under the earlier regime, electricity was provided on the occasions of Eid-Bakrid, while there were power cuts during Holi and Deepawali in the state.

“For the first time, government schemes are reaching every individual in the state under the BJP government,” he said.

The chief minister further said people have rejected the “hardcore dynasts” and ‘lotus’ (BJP election symbol) is sure to bloom at every booth of Gorakhpur.

Addressing an election rally in Pipraich assembly constituency, he termed it as “futile” to trust the opportunist leaders who keep changing friends with every election, referring to SP-BSP and SP-Congress alliances in earlier elections in the state.

“Our government’s sentiments are with every section of the society, but SP’s support base is with terrorists. The previous Samajwadi Party government was the first to withdraw terror cases,” he alleged.

Claiming that all-around development has been done by his government in the state, the BJP leader said, “If our double engine government comes to power again, all women of over 60 years of age can travel for free in state-run buses.”

He also emphasised the fact that no riots took place in the state under his governance, nor did women or businessmen suffered harassment.

“We did what we said. We also promise to provide government jobs or employment to one youth of every family in the next five years,” he added.

At another election meeting in Deoria, Adityanath accused the opposition parties of “doing politics of appeasement and spreading hatred among communities to increase their votebank”, adding that their candidate lists reflect their “vested interests”.

Reiterating that SP and BSP’s rule was synonymous with anarchy, terror and hooliganism, he said, “Whenever they (SP, BSP) ruled, riots took place. No riots took place in the last five years, while 700 riots took place during SP government and 364 riots during BSP’s rule.”

The Uttar Pradesh chief minister added that the BJP has attained an inaccessible lead in the first five phases of the ongoing assembly polls and the party is poised well to hit a ‘sixer’ in the final phases to romp home with 300-plus seats.

  • Bulldozer Baba zindabad: BJP workers greet Yogi during his roadshow in Prayagraj

    By PTI

PRAYAGRAJ: BJP supporters greeted Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath with the slogan of “Bulldozer Baba zindabad” as he held his roadshow here on Friday in support of his Cabinet colleague Sidharth Nath Singh’s candidature from City (West) assembly seat.

Nearly two-km-long roadshow of the chief minister starting from Karbala Chauraha and ending at Nakhash Kona Chauraha of the city was attended by “lakhs” of people, eyewitnesses said.

During the entire roadshow, which started at 5 pm and ended at 6 pm, people carrying the BJP’s saffron flags rent the air with slogans of “Jai Shri Ram” and Bulldozer Baba Zindabad”.

The new term for the chief minister was first heard from Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav, who, in a YouTube video, has claimed that a prestigious English daily has changed Yogi Adityanath’s name to Baba Bulldozer.

The term purportedly owes its origin to the extensive use of bulldozers by the Uttar Pradesh government for demolishing illegal properties of criminals in the state.

The roadshow interestingly began near a place where Adityanath had done the ‘bhumi pujan’ for a residential complex for common people on a piece of land acquired by the state government from the possession of former MP Atique Ahmed.

The roadshow was led by over half a dozen horse-mounted BJP workers carrying the party’s saffron flags, followed by other party workers beating drums and blowing trumpets.

A tableau of Lord Ram, his wife Sita and Lord Hanuman too formed part of the roadshow with a large number of women marching along and the people showering flower petals from their rooftops on Chief Minister Adityanath and party’s candidate Siddharth Nath Singh.

The event also had some tense moments as a convoy of Samajwadi Party candidate Richa Singh and her supporters sought to crossed its path with the roadshow route, resulting in some angry exchanges between supporters of the two parties.

The police, however, managed to control the situation by diverting the SP candidate’s convoy to an alternative route.

After the completion of the roadshow, the chief minister urged people to vote for the BJP to ensure that the state continued to be ruled by a “double-engine” government and continue progressing at a fast pace.

The assembly segments of the Prayagraj district go to the polls on February 27 during the fifth phase of the state assembly elections, the electioneering for which ended Friday.

  • INTERVIEW | Nationalism, development, good law and order on BJP’s agenda, says Yogi Adityanath

    Express News Service

The BJP will win 80 per cent seats in the Uttar Pradesh assembly and in the rest of 20 per cent, all other parties will try to find their feet. The BJP’s agenda is nationalism, development, and good law and order, UP CM and BJP leader Yogi Adityanath told Namita Bajpai in an interview. Excerpts:

    Q. With UP polls already halfway, where do you find BJP standing?

    A. We are going ahead with nationalism, development and good law and order agenda. We are coming back winning 80 percent of seats in the state and forming the government as people have the confidence that BJP can provide them security and development.

    Q. Your statement over 80 per cent vs 20 per cent has drawn strong reactions. Your take

    A. I speak only what is real. I have been saying right from the beginning that this is a tussle of 80 percent and 20 percent. People have interpreted this as per their own perceptions. What I meant by saying it was that BJP will win 80 per cent of seats and in the rest of 20 per cent, all others will try to find their feet.

    Q. The polls in UP have become more or less bipolar between BJP and SP. Will it impact BJP prospects?

    A. In the 2019 General elections, SP and BSP had come together to stitch a mahagathbandhan (grand alliance). Even RLD was also a part of it and Congress had a tacit understanding with them. It had turned out to be a bipolar contest even then as it had become a fight of BJP Vs all. In that election, the BJP had taken a lead on 287-290 assembly segments. It was neither a triangular nor four-corner fight then. It was a straight fight and we won 80 per cent of the Lok Sabha seats. Rest 20 per cent were divided among others. Ironically, Samajwadi Party, leading the grand alliance, had slipped to the number three position. BSP was ahead of it.

    Q. Was SP-RLD alliance a setback for BJP in western UP?

RLD was with the SP in the previous Lok Sabha elections as well. The results were there for everyone to see. It is not going to make much difference.

    Q. Why has there been an apparent shift from development to law and order in BJP’s narrative?

    A. Development becomes real and meaningful only when the poor feel secured and protected. Rule of law is the basic tenet of good governance. The first condition to establish rule of law is a genuine effort made by the dispensation to ensure security and respect to one and all without any discrimination. So we focused on law and order. We have made the state curfew-free, riot-free and fearless. There has been no riot and hence, no prolonged curfews during the last five years. We have inculcated fearlessness and confidence among girls who can now step out freely at any time. It was beyond imagination before 2017. We focused on the issue of rule of law but I have never missed the discussion on the development and welfare of the deprived in my discourse. Possibly, this is the first election post-independence, when people are acknowledging openly that law and order have improved genuinely on the ground.

    Q. Your poll speeches reflect that you are back to hardline and aggressiveness?

    A. There is neither a hard-line nor a soft line in BJP. We have only a single line shown by Lord Ram to rid the earth of demons or the one shown by Lord Krishna in Bhagwad Gita — Paritranaya Sadhunam (for the welfare of holy people). We follow these philosophies. We work to ensure a peaceful life for people bringing anti-social elements and criminals into the ambit of the law. We have tried to work to achieve this relentlessly and have already got our goal and vision set for the next five years.

    Q. SP Chief Akhilesh Yadav feels that your statement — Garmi Utar Jayegi — has offended many.

    A. Naturally, the statement will annoy them. The reason is that all those who used to resort to lawlessness and intimidation of others are associated with them. Be it the person behind Kairana migration or rioters inciting trouble from Saharanpur in the west to Mau in the east or even professional criminals and mafia who were hiding in their confines for the last five years, have come out after getting tickets from the Samajwadi Party. They have started showing their colours again by intimidating voters.  SP leaders feel offended by my statement because all of those who had been on our radar during the last five years used to run the Samajwadi Party government earlier. They had created a mess in UP. They brought infamy and disrepute to the state. So I consoled the people saying that all will be well after March 10. Secondly, their agenda does not include the welfare of the poor and deprived. They believe in patronizing the mafia and empathizing with terrorists. They are doing it even today.

    Q. Do you think the Supreme Court order to withdraw recovery notices against anti-CAA protestors has any impact on BJP prospects?

    A. No impact. The state government has already been working on the issue. When anti—CAA riots were plotted here, we had released an administrative order to handle the situation then. Later, we brought an Act in 2020. The government, under the Act, has already set up three tribunals in Lucknow, Meerut, and Prayagraj. Some of the cases have been handed over to the tribunals and the rest are in process of withdrawal when the SC order has come. The apex court has permitted us to act under the Uttar Pradesh Recovery of Damages to Public and Private Property Act -2020

    Q. Stray cattle is a big issue in this election. Your take.

    A. It is not a new issue. It was always there and is not only limited to UP. Secondly, should we allow the slaughter of Gau Mata? We have closed illegal slaughterhouses and I say with conviction that illegal slaughterhouses will not be allowed to operate. Moreover, we have done a lot for the rehabilitation of shelterless cattle. At present, we are taking care of nine lakh stray cattle of which a lakh have been given to farmers to look after. We give an allowance of Rs 900 per month per cattle to the farmer. Even under the guidance of PM Narendra Modi , a new model to deal with the issue is ready in Kashi and it will be implemented in each UP district.

    Q. Your statement over the Hijab row created a flutter. Your take.

    A. I think personalized attire should be limited to places where there is no defined dress code or uniform. Everyone should abide by a dress code in institutions where it is well defined as it is a matter of discipline. It should not have been made an issue at all as there can be no alternative to discipline. So I feel that the system in the country will be run according to Constitution and not the personal laws.

    Q. Why has Aparna Yadav not been given a ticket?

    A. Aparna Yadav has not joined the BJP for a ticket. She has been a very good social worker and she has made it clear that she joined the BJP as PM Narendra Modi’s ‘nation first’ sentiment moved her. She believes in nationalism and the party will certainly think about her in the days to come.

    Q. Do you think the Lakhimpur Kheri incident has been an issue in this election?

    A. BJP is winning all the seats of Lakhimpur Kheri. I have campaigned on all the seats and there is no doubt about the party’s victory there with good margins.

    Q. How do you intend to address anti-incumbency against MLAs in various assembly segments?

    A. Look, people have to vote for government formation and it will be done if we get an adequate number of MLAs. At least, two years of our tenure were spent in fighting Covid. The BJP MLAs have done a good job but many of them might not have come up to people’s expectations. I appeal to the people to vote for BJP and I assure them that the government will address all issues which people have against the MLAs in their constituencies.

  • Yogi seeks vote for those who ‘save’ cows; promises monthly stipend of Rs 900 per cow

    By PTI

AYODHYA: Launching a campaign for the fifth phase of the Uttar Pradesh elections, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday asked people to vote for those who “protect cows and not those who kill them”.

He also said that the state was ruled by goons before 2017, but they were put behind the bars after the BJP government assumed power.

Adityanath was campaigning in support of the BJP candidates of the Milkipur reserved Assembly constituency and Bikapur seat in Ayodhya district on Tuesday.

The chief minister promised to enhance the security of cows and other cattle if voted to power again.

The farmers who rear cows will get a stipend of Rs 900 per month per cow, he announced, adding that his government will not compromise with the security of cows under any circumstances.

Beginning his speech at RD Inter College, Bikapur, Adityanath took a veiled dig at Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav and said “Babua” had not been visiting the temple at Ayodhya. “We will win all the five seats in Ayodhya, 325 seats in the state and thereby form a strong government,” he said.

Later, addressing the gathering at Inayatnagar in Milkipur, he said the whole world was looking towards Ayodhya and Ayodhya meant Ram temple.

“By next year, this grand temple will be ready. If Ayodhya is to be established as a grand city, there should be a double engine government of the BJP in Uttar Pradesh,” he said.

Accusing the earlier SP government of favouring a community, the chief minister said electricity in the state used to be supplied on Eid and Muharram, but cut off on Holi and Diwali.
