Xiaomi is preparing to unveil its new flagship 17 series later this month. A recent video featuring the company’s president, Lu Weibang, has been circulating online, comparing the upcoming phone with the iPhone 17 Pro Max. The video’s appearance coincides with the recent launch of iPhone 17 sales, generating significant interest in the new device.

The purpose of the video was reportedly to clarify that Xiaomi’s design does not copy Apple’s camera island design. The president emphasized differences in design language. Despite this, the overall design of both phones shows striking similarities. Xiaomi has stated that the phone’s design was inspired by the Mi 11 Ultra from 2021. The company also clarified that skipping the 16 series was not done to align with Apple’s product cycles, even though a Pro Max version is planned.

Lu Weibang announced that the 17 series will be available in China before October 1. He also confirmed that these devices will be the first to feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 SoC, scheduled to be unveiled on September 23. Xiaomi reportedly secured an extended exclusivity period for the chip, suggesting competitors won’t launch similar devices before October. The Xiaomi 17 Pro is expected to be priced between CNY 5,000 and CNY 6,000 ($700 to $850), while the Pro Max is estimated to cost between CNY 6,000 and CNY 7,000 ($850 to $1,000). These prices are for the Chinese market and could be higher internationally.

The new smaller screen added to the rear of the phone can be used for music control, displaying information and countdowns. It can also act as a viewfinder, enhancing selfies by utilizing the rear cameras.

Industry executives and analysts suggest that increasing sales during the upcoming festive season will be challenging for smartphone brands. This is due to lower demand and slow product procurement by retailers, leading to substantial remaining stock from the first half of 2025. Handset manufacturers are attempting to capture market share by offering discounts on older models and launching new models ahead of schedule to gauge market response.

Xiaomi, the Chinese tech giant, is expanding its horizons beyond smartphones and gadgets, making a significant move into the automotive sector. After the launch of its first electric car, the SU7 EV, which already created a buzz in the market, Xiaomi is now targeting the European electric car market. Having established a strong presence in the electric vehicle segment in China, Xiaomi is preparing to directly compete with established automakers like Tesla and BYD. The company plans to launch its first electric car in Europe by 2027, where Tesla and BYD have already gained a foothold. Xiaomi’s expansion plans were signaled by the company’s President, Lu Weibing. Furthermore, reports indicate that Xiaomi’s electric car launch resulted in a 31% increase in quarterly revenue, further boosting the company’s confidence. However, entering the European market won’t be easy for Xiaomi. The Chinese automaker faces import duties and tariffs, potentially leading to a tax of approximately 48% if it sells cars in Europe. This includes a 10% basic duty and around 35-38% in other charges, posing a significant challenge in managing costs and margins. Currently, Xiaomi only sells the SU7 electric sedan. The company completed the production of one lakh units of this model last year, and it was showcased in India as well. The Xiaomi SU7 Max boasts a 101 kWh battery pack, offering a driving range of up to 800 kilometers on a single charge. The SU7 comes in two variants: SU7 and SU7 Max. The SU7 Max is incredibly fast, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.78 seconds, and reaching 200 km/h in 10.67 seconds, with a top speed of 265 km/h. It also delivers 668 bhp of output and 838 Nm of torque.

Several Chinese smartphone manufacturers, including Honor and Xiaomi’s sub-brand Redmi, are focusing on devices with large batteries. Recent reports suggest Redmi is developing a phone with an 8500mAh to 9000mAh battery. This has been made possible by advancements in silicon-carbon technology, allowing for increased battery capacity without significantly increasing the phone’s thickness. This upcoming Redmi phone is expected to utilize the company’s own technology and an upgraded version of silicon-carbon composite materials, aiming to offer a high-capacity battery while maintaining a slim profile under 8.5mm, without compromising battery cycle life. If this materializes, it will be the phone with the largest battery in Redmi’s existing portfolio. Moreover, Redmi is also anticipated to launch the Redmi Turbo 5 Pro, featuring an 8000mAh battery, an upgrade from the 7550mAh battery in the Redmi Turbo 4 Pro.
