  • Pratham TI-a unique initiative to encourage women in politics and policy-making: Priyanka Chaturvedi

    By Express News Service

NEW DELHI: Politics in India is now changing from when it used to be called as a ‘male bastion’ to opening new vistas for women, who are gradually becoming good political leaders. But despite the increasing voting percentage of women and growing participation of women in politics right from Panchayat to Parliament levels, India has now only 102 women MPs out of a total existing strength of 764 MPs in both the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha.

Aimed at increasing the participation of women and girls from a common background in politics as well as policy-making arenas, ShivSena MP in Upper House (RS) Priyanka Chaturvedi has embarked on a first of its kind mission to educate and encourage women and girls, who aspire to be into the policy-making and political arena.

Christened as project ‘Pratham TI’, Chaturvedi moved with this in May this year inspired by the ideology of (late) Baba Saheb Thackeray, who always wanted to have equal participation of women in politics and the country’s policy-making endeavour.

She started this initiative with an initial group of just 10 girls from various fields of life, who get to intern with a woman MP free of cost to make them acquainted with various parliamentary and policy-making processors and formalities.

Speaking to this newspaper, Priyanka Chaturvedi said: “ This initiative called ‘Pratham Ti’ is aimed at making Indian politics and policy more accessible to young women from common backgrounds, who despite having immense political wisdom and wits,  lack motivation and support for entering politics”.

Detailing this initiative, she said that women and girls of ‘Pratham TI’ have been assigned a 3-month internship with a woman MP to get them acquainted with various terms and techniques of parliamentary procedures and policy-making skills.

“A galaxy of influential intellectuals and speakers like Pawan Khera, Syed Akabaruddin, Samir Saran, ShivShanakr Singh(Author of The Art of Conjuring Alternate Realities) and How to Win an Indian Election), Maansi Verma( founder of Maadhyam-a civic engagement initiative) and others have so far trained the girls through sessions on the functioning of the Parliament and shared great insights encouraging the girls for politics”, she recalled.

Mumbai’s mayor Kishori Pednekar was among others who came forward to train the girls under the ‘Pratham-Ti’ initiative, which is aimed to encourage and empower the Pratham-TI fellows moving them into politics and policy-making issues.

This is actually a 7- month initiative with the support of many faculty and speakers like Dr Carole Spary-associate professor at the University of Nottingham in the UK, Syed Akbaruddin-dean of Kautilya School of Public Policy and former permanent representative of India in UN, Pawn Khera, Samir Saran-president of ORF, Akhil Neelam-Co-founder of Women for politics and others.

Impressed by the Chaturvedi initiative, the NETRI Foundation-which is India’s first women’s political incubator that helps women up-skill and trains them to join politics, has started training the fellows of Pratham-TI.

“The Observer Research Foundation has also come in support of this initiative to make Indian women and girls entering into politics competent in policy-making, and to take the country to new heights of women empowerment”, she said.

Recalling the first day of the Pratham-TI, she said that it moved with a session in ‘Public Narrative Gender & Intersectionality’ by Dr Carole Spary-director of Asia Research Institute and professor of politics at the University of Nottingham in the UK.

Shivangi Sharma-student of BA in Jesus and Mary College Delhi, Adithya- student of Hindu College, Divya Dixit- studying economics at NMIMS in Mumbai, Sreelakshmi-pursuing graduation from Miranda House hailing from the land of elephants and festival-Thrissur in Kerala Shristi Srivastava from UP many others are among the first cohort of Pratham-TI young fellows, being acquainted and trained for their rise in politics.

“The Pratham TI would be across the country to make Indian politics more accessible to them through wider gender empowerment”, Priyanka Chaturvedi said. Apart from this, 20 women ShivSena leaders are also motivating the women in Maharashtra’s many districts as part of Pratham-TI.

  • Angelina Jolie shares emotional letter sent to her from young Afghan girl

    By ANI

WASHINGTON: Hollywood star Angelina Jolie has called on her social media followers to be aware of atrocities being committed in Afghanistan.

Jolie took to her Instagram handle on Saturday and shared a personal letter she received from a young woman in the country. The letter was blurred out to not reveal the girl’s identity.

The 46-year-old actor and humanitarian began the caption of her post by writing, “A young woman in #Afghanistan sent me this letter. I’m protecting her identity, but she hasn’t been able to go back to school since the Taliban seized power.”

Noting that women in Afghanistan are “being arrested simply for taking part in peaceful protests,” Jolie said the young girl wrote, “I might never be able to go outside again or even be able to speak as I am a girl.”

She then shared another extract from the young woman’s letter. “I feel like women don’t have any right to speak or put their word forward,” the unidentified female wrote to the mother of six.

“The rights of the woman are taken away from them and they are not allowed to do anything in the country,” she added.

The woman who wrote the letter to Jolie then detailed an instance from a “few weeks back when the Taliban arrested two of the women who raised their voices in order to ask for the rights of woman and freedom.”

Expressing that the instance left her shocked and dismayed, the woman said, “I just thought, that this is the end.”

The actor closed out her caption with a plea that read, “Please track what is happening in Afghanistan, where young women are being taken from their homes at night at gunpoint and disappeared, and new restrictions are being imposed on the freedom of women and girls day by day.”

“Please help ensure they’re not forgotten,” Jolie concluded her post, which also highlighted women’s rights activists who are “missing” in Afghanistan. These included Alia Azizi, Parwana Ibrahimkhel, Mursal Ayar, and Zahra Mohammadi, plus Tamana Zaryab Paryani and her three sisters.

As per people magazine, back in August, Jolie had made her Instagram debut to share a different letter from another young woman who expressed her fears for the future after the Taliban had taken over Afghanistan.

In the letter, the young unidentified woman detailed how she and many others were living in fear, expressing “all our dreams are gone.”

In response, Jolie, who is a former U.N. goodwill ambassador, and has worked with refugees in past years, noted that she would remain active in her fight to aid the Afghan women, “Like others who are committed, I will not turn away. I will continue to look for ways to help. And I hope you’ll join me.”

  • Women at the centre of new Congress strategy

    Express News Service

NEW DELHI:  The grand old party of the country is preparing to adopt a new strategy, keeping women, farmers, Scheduled Castes, minorities and young voters in mind in the Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh next year.

Congress leaders are learnt to have started working on this strategy with a team of experts from socio-economic and political fields. “We are set to adopt a new strategy, setting examples for other parties to follow. The decision to reserve 40% of tickets for woman is not going to be an isolated example. A lot of surprises are in store, for youths, farmers and others, who are longing for a change in UP and other states,” a senior leader  claimed.

As per official data, UP has around 6.61 crore female voters out of 14.40 crore eligible voters. In recent local body elections, 53.7% of successful candidates were women. Archana Kumari, a Delhi-based research scholar working on electoral consciousness among women aged between 25-45, said, “In states like UP, Bihar, Jharkhand, Punjab, Haryana, MP and West Bengal,  electoral consciousness both in casting votes and participation in electoral process has increased by 15% to 22% in the last 15 years. Results of elections have started being influenced by the huge turnout of women voters in the country”.

RK Verma, another political researcher associated with Indian Institute of Public Administration, said the decision reflects that Congress has understood the emerging social and gender chemistry of voters, although a bit late. A reliable party source said Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has played a big part in devising the new strategy. “A war room for fighting the UP elections has been set up in Lucknow where experts from various related political fields would be fine-tuning the new strategies,” he said.

It is expected that female voters in UP would once again outnumber their male counterparts — from 63.26% in 2017 to 65-67% in 2022. BJP had managed to get a major chunk, as around 46% of women voted for them. Hailing the decision of reserving 40% tickets reserve for women, senior Congress leader KC Venugopal called it historic. Pawan Khera, another leader,  said, “This is what revolutions are made of. This announcement is unprecedented. It  will prove to be a turning point in Indian politics”.

Echoing similar sentimentsd, Chhattisgarh chief minister and special observer of party for UP elections, Bhupesh Baghel termed the decision a historic one. “Now, the women of UP will not be afraid but will say it firmly,” he said.

  • Rajnath Singh hails Indira Gandhi for leading India ‘during times of war’

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: Former prime minister Indira Gandhi not only led the country for a number of years, but she also did so during the times of war, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Thursday, in an apparent reference to her role in the 1971 war with Pakistan.

In an address at a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) seminar on the role of women in the armed forces, the defence minister also talked about Rani Laxmi Bai and former president Pratibha Patil, and said India has a positive experience in harnessing women’s power in national development.

Singh said though it is justifiable to discuss the role of women in the armed forces, their wider contribution in all spheres of security and nation-building must also be recognised and reinforced.

“There are a number of examples of women taking up arms to protect their country and the rights of the  people through history. Rani Laxmi Bai is amongst the most revered and respected amongst them,” he said.

“India’s former prime minister Indira Gandhi not only led the country for a number of years, she also did so during the times of war. And more recently, Pratibha Patil was the president of India and the supreme commander of the Indian armed forces,” the defence minister added.

Under Indira Gandhi’s prime ministership, India won the 1971 war against Pakistan that resulted in the birth of Bangladesh.

Singh said the tradition of women as both caregivers and protectors has continued over the centuries and remains deeply embedded in the customs and traditions of the region.

“If Saraswati is our goddess of knowledge, wisdom and learning, mother Durga remains associated with protection, strength, destruction and war,” he said.

Singh said India is amongst a very few countries that took an early initiative in terms of women’s participation in the armed forces and that women are now being accepted for permanent commissioning and shall be commanding Army units and battalions in the near future.

“Women have been serving with pride in the Indian Military Nursing Service for over 100 years now. The Indian Army had commenced commissioning women officers in 1992. It has now moved to inducting women officers in most of the branches of the Army,” he said.

“Women are now being accepted for permanent commission and shall be commanding Army units and battalions in the near future,” he added.

Singh said women will be able to join the premier tri-service pre-commissioning training institute, the National Defence Academy, from next year.

Describing the induction of women in the military police in the Army as a major milestone, he said India’s approach to their induction in the police, central police, paramilitary and armed forces has been progressive.

“We have taken the evolutionary path of moving from support to combat support and thereafter, to combat arms within the armed forces,” he said.

“We have found that the process of induction, given its broad-based and progressive path, has also simultaneously prepared the society and the armed forces for this change.

This is an important aspect to ensure a smooth and successful transition,” the defence minister added.

Referring to women’s role in the Navy, he said from humble beginnings in the Air Traffic Control in 1993, the women officers graduated to being pilots of maritime reconnaissance aircraft in 2016 and are now being appointed onboard warships since last year.

“The Indian Coast Guard has been employing women officers in combat roles, which include pilots, observers and aviation support services. In the Indian Air Force, women are inducted in all roles, including combat and support roles,” Singh said.

  • Apathy: Jharkhand women hockey trainees deprived diet allowance for 17 months

    Express News Service

RANCHI:  Rice, salt and onions form the diet budding hockey stars groomed by three academies run by the Jharkhand Sports Authority (JSA) subsist on.

While the Indian women’s team’s exploits in the Olympics have reignited the nation’s interest in hockey, those saddled with the task of bettering their show have not received their diet allowance for 17 months.

Deepti Kullu & others have not receiveddiet allowance for 17 months | ExpressThe JSA runs three hockey academies for girls — two in Ranchi and one in Simdega. Salima Tete and Nikki Pradhan, members of the Olympic team, are products of these academies.

The three academies have on their rolls 75 prospective national players, all from rural backgrounds and completely dependent on government aid for nutritious diet.

They used to get Rs 175 a day as diet allowance before the pandemic set in.

The girls were sent back home in April, 2020, after the outbreak of Covid-19, and since then their struggle to stay fit has been real.

According to Deepti Kullu from Simdega,

“It is really a challenge to stay fit in this hour of crisis. I have not received my diet allowance in 17 months. My poor family cannot spare money for my diet,” she said, but exuded confidence that this crisis would not break her determination.

Illi Tirkey of Koromia village under Thethaitanger Block in Simdega, has a similar story of deprivation to share.

“Mine is a farming family. Two square meals is a luxury at the best of times, and a special diet in times of such crisis is nearly impossible without government suppor,” says Illi, who has been working as a labourer since returning from the academy.

To soak in the pressure during the 70 minutes on the field, a player has to be mentally, psychologically and physically fit.

However, the 70 minutes on the field is always the outcome of proper training, coaches say.

The players need milk, eggs, pulses, vegetables, meat, fish and fruits to get the right amount of calcium and protein. If denied, they may not develop the desired strength and stamina.

“While other centres have cleared dues to players, these 75 girls have not been lucky,” said Pratima Barwa, coach at Residential Girls Hockley Training Center in Simdega.

Minister of tourism, sports and youth affairs Hafizul Hassan assured to sort out the matter soon.
