  • Oscars effect: Tony Awards introduce ‘no violence’ policy ahead of 2022 show

    By PTI

LOS ANGELES: Tony Awards have introduced a new ‘no violence’ policy ahead of their 2022 show following the controversy surrounding the slapgate incident involving Will Smith and Chris Rock at the Oscars.

The award show’s producers revealed the new procedure— which clarifies how they’d handle an individual “in the event of an incident”  in a letter to ticket buyers on Wednesday, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Oscars live show was briefly interrupted when Will Smith, this year’s best actor winner, slapped the comedian and presenter on the stage for cracking a joke about wife Jada Pinkett-Smith’s hair. The incident shocked the Hollywood audience attending the movie gala and those who tuned in through their screens.

Smith, who later apologised to the comedian and the Academy, has been banned from Oscars and their other related events for a decade.

The Tonys are the first known major award show to publicly institute a new no-violence policy following the Oscars on March 27.

In the letter obtained by THR and sent by Tony Awards Productions to possible ticket buyers for the 75th annual show, producers wrote, “The Tony Awards has a strict no violence policy. In the event of an incident, the perpetrator will be removed from the event immediately,” the letter read.

The new policy and other details were reportedly introduced among other standard policies to that include the dress code, seating, and vaccination required to attend the New York event. The Tony Awards will take place on Sunday, June 12.

  • Michael Bay says he would ‘absolutely’ work with Will Smith following Oscars slap controversy

    By ANI

WASHINGTON: Filmmaker Michael Bay has stated that he would “absolutely” work with Will Smith after the actor slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars.

According to Variety, Bay, who has directed Smith in two of his signature action movies, ‘Bad Boys’ and ‘Bad Boys II’, made the statement while speaking to Entertainment Weekly.

“Absolutely, 100 per cent. He’s a very even-keeled guy. Very even-keeled,” Bay said when asked about working with Smith again. Bay further opened up a bit more about the slap. “At first, immediately I’m like, ‘Did this just happen?’” he said.

Bay continued, “Then I saw the yell from Will. That’s a real Will yell. Will is an amazing fighter. He’s studied boxing. First of all, it’s wrong to do, no matter what. Let’s just get that out there. But when people said, ‘Oh, he could have killed him.’ No, a slap is different. A punch? Yeah, you can kill someone. Will gave him a slap.”

While presenting the best documentary feature award at the 2022 Oscars, Rock made a joke about Smith’s wife Pinkett Smith’s shaved head.

Rock said he couldn’t wait to see Pinkett Smith, who has alopecia areata, star in ‘G.I. Jane 2’ which led Smith to go up on stage and slap Rock. Smith returned to his seat and shouted, “Keep my wife’s name out of your fu**ing mouth!”

A few hours later, Smith announced his resignation from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, claiming he “willfully accepts any and all consequences for my conduct.”

Later, the Academy’s Board of Governors announced they were banning Smith from all events and awards appearances under the Oscars title for 10 years. Responding to it in a statement, the actor said, “I accept and respect the academy’s decision.”

    By ANI

WASHINGTON: Actor Will Smith has responded to being banned from Academy events for 10 years after slapping Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars ceremony.

The Board of Governors for the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, on Friday, voted to ban the ‘The Pursuit of Happiness’ star from all the Academy events for 10 years.

Minutes after the decision was announced, Smith responded by saying, “I accept and respect the Academy’s decision,” to Page Six.

“The Board of Governors has decided, for a period of 10 years, from April 8, 2022, Mr Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards,” the Academy announced on Friday, through an official statement.

The statement continued, “We want to express our deep gratitude to Mr Rock for maintaining his composure under extraordinary circumstances. We also want to thank our hosts, nominees, presenters and winners for their poise and grace during our telecast.” Smith, 53, will keep the Oscar he won this year for his role in ‘King Richard.’

For the unversed, while presenting the best documentary feature award at the 2022 Oscars, Chris Rock made a joke about Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head.

A few minutes after the incident, Smith was announced Best Actor at the 94th Academy Awards. While accepting his first-ever Oscar for best actor (leading role) in ‘King Richard’, Smith apologized to the Academy and fellow nominees but did not mention Rock.

However, after receiving backlash for his disorderly behaviour, Smith issued an apology to Chris Rock and Academy on his social media handle. On March 29, there was a short virtual meeting between Smith, Rubin and Academy CEO Dawn Hudson, initiated by Smith.

A few hours later, Smith announced his resignation from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, claiming he “willfully accept any and all consequences for my conduct.”

  • Will Smith resigns from Oscars Academy over Chris Rock slap

    By AFP

LOS ANGELES: Will Smith resigned from the body that awards the Oscars on Friday, five days after he assaulted comedian Chris Rock during a live global broadcast.

The actor said his actions, which overshadowed Hollywood’s glitziest night of the year, were “shocking, painful and inexcusable.”

“The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home,” Smith said.

“I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I am heartbroken.”

Attendees at the Dolby Theatre watched open-mouthed as Smith mounted the stage and slapped Rock across the face after the comic made a joke about his wife’s closely cropped head.

Jada Pinkett Smith has alopecia, a condition that causes hair to fall out.

He returned to his seat and shouted obscenities at Rock, who has been widely praised for keeping a cool head and getting things back on track.

Half an hour after the astonishing attack, Smith was awarded the best actor Oscar for his role in sports biopic “King Richard.”

There have been conflicting reports in recent days over whether Smith was asked to leave the ceremony, with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences saying he refused to go.

The group said this week it was starting disciplinary action against Smith — only the fifth Black man to win the movie world’s highest individual award for a man — and warned he could face a rare expulsion.

But on Friday, Smith pre-empted that punishment.

“I am resigning from membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and will accept any further consequences the Board deems appropriate.

“I want to put the focus back on those who deserve attention for their achievements and allow the Academy to get back to the incredible work it does to support creativity and artistry in film.”

Rock, who told a comedy audience in Boston this week he was “still kind of processing” events, has drawn praise for the way he handled events.

Oscars producer, Will Packer, told ABC that it was the comic’s professionalism that allowed the show to go on.

“Because Chris continued the way that he did, he completed the category. He handed the trophy to [best documentary winner] Questlove… it gave us license in a way to continue the show, which is what we were trying to do,” he said.

Packer said he had counselled against ejecting Smith from the theatre after speaking to Rock as he walked off stage.

“I said: ‘Did he really hit you?’ And he looked at me and he goes: ‘Yes. I just took a punch from Muhammad Ali,’” Packer said.

Smith played the legendary boxer in the 2001 film “Ali.”

Packer said he had not been part of the conversation about removing Smith, but he had spoken against it.

“I immediately went to the Academy leadership that was on-site and I said: ‘Chris Rock doesn’t want that,’ I said: ‘Rock has made it clear that he does not want to make a bad situation worse.’”

The standing ovation Smith received for his Oscar win has been heavily criticized, with accusations that Hollywood did not take the assault seriously.

Packer said the applause was for the actor and his work, not for the incident.

“I think that the people in that room who stood up, stood up for somebody who they knew, who was a peer, who was a friend, who was a brother, who has a three-decades-plus-long career of being the opposite of what we saw in that moment,” he said.

“I don’t think that these were people that were applauding anything at all about that moment, and all these people saw their friend at his absolute worst moment and were hoping that they could encourage him and lift him up and that he would somehow try to make it better.”

  • Joke was poor but Will Smith first laughed, then went crazy: Somy Ali on Oscars slap

    By IANS

MUMBAI: Actress Somy Ali talks about the recent incident at the Oscars where Hollywood actor Will Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock since the latter made fun of Smith’s wife’s health condition.

Somy says that she stands divided on the matter.

“I have two opinions on this: The joke was in extremely poor taste given Smith’s wife’s struggle with alopecia. My second opinion is that violence begets violence and hate begets hate. Therefore, I do not condone violence in any situation as I am a pacifist myself. There could have been many ways to handle this on Smith’s end and it shows Rock’s class by not filing charges. Again, I am not in any shape or form saying that his joke was not hurtful to Jada, but if you notice Smith first laughed at it and then took action.

“This depicts that he found it funny and then realised his wife’s condition and suddenly decided to do something about it with, no rationality whatsoever,” says Somy, who runs an NGO No More Tears in the US which help victims of domestic violence and abuse.

She says that as celebrities, it’s important to accept that you will be trolled or joked about. “Once you are a celebrity and you choose to be one, you will forever be trolled, made fun of, bullied and, yes, be the joke of the party or award shows. There is simply no escaping that if you choose the fame game. It’s part of the territory and we see it daily on celebrities globally on their social media. I have been away from the industry for 20 years and now when I decide to speak my truth because I am now ready and it’s my choice to speak up when I wish to do so. I have been getting the most disgusting messages and sadly the majority of them are from women,” she says.

She adds: “Well, here’s one of my favourite quotes: “Laugh loudly, laugh often, and most importantly laugh at yourself.” Chelsea Handler. If you can’t laugh at yourself, you are devoid of humility in my opinion.”

Ask her where does she think people should draw the line with jokes, she says, “I think celebrities’ children should never bear the brunt of the jokes, children should always be left out of it. Jokes about rape, sexual assault, child abuse, and domestic violence cross the line for me. That’s absolutely unacceptable for me.”

  • Police ‘ready to arrest’ Will Smith after Chris Rock slap: Oscar producer

    By AFP

LOS ANGELES: Police officers were ready to arrest Will Smith after he attacked comedian Chris Rock at the Oscars, the show’s producer said Thursday.

In his first public comments since the shocking episode that marred Hollywood’s most important evening, Will Packer said he had sat with Rock when officers came to speak to him.

“They were saying, you know, this is battery…. They said we will go get him, we are prepared, we are prepared to get him right now, you can press charges, we can arrest him, you have — they were laying out the options,” Packer told ABC Television.

“Chris was — he was being very dismissive of those options. He was like, ‘I’m fine.’”

Los Angeles police “officers finished laying out what his options were and they said, ‘You know, would you like us to take any action?’ and he said ‘No.’”

Police in Los Angeles said Sunday that Rock had declined to file a report.

Smith shocked the entertainment world by mounting the stage during the live broadcast of the Oscars and hitting Rock over a joke about the actor’s wife.

Half an hour later, Smith was awarded the best actor Oscar for his role in “King Richard” — the movie industry’s highest honour for a male performer.

The announcement was greeted with cheers and applause from the crowd of industry insiders.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the body that awards the Oscars, said Wednesday Smith had been asked to leave the ceremony after the assault but had refused.

Conflicting reports emerged Thursday over that detail, including one that suggested Packer had asked him to remain in the Dolby Theatre.

In the brief clip, aired Thursday on ABC ahead of the full interview scheduled for Friday, Packer denied having spoken to Smith.

The Academy said Wednesday it was mulling punishment, including possible expulsion — for Smith, one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars, and only the fifth Black man to win a leading actor Oscar.

“The Board of Governors today initiated disciplinary proceedings against Mr Will Smith for violations of the Academy’s Standards of Conduct, including inappropriate physical contact, abusive or threatening behaviour, and compromising the integrity of the Academy,” the statement said.

“The Academy may take any disciplinary action, which may include suspension, expulsion, or other sanctions.”

Trade title Variety reported Thursday that Academy chiefs Dawn Hudson and David Rubin spoke with Smith on Tuesday, 24 hours before the organization issued its damning statement.

It quoted sources saying the Zoom meeting had lasted up to 30 minutes.

During the conversation Smith apologized for his attack on Rock, and said he was aware there would be consequences, Variety reported.

Smith issued an Instagram apology on Monday, in which he called his behaviour “unacceptable and inexcusable.”

“I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be.”

Rock, whose US comedy tour began in Boston this week told audience members he was “still kind of processing” the incident.

    He made no further comment.

  • Academy begins disciplinary proceedings against Will Smith for his behaviour at Oscars 2022

    By ANI

WASHINGTON: Appears like Oscars 2022 slap controversy is not over yet. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Wednesday began disciplinary proceedings against actor Will Smith for misbehaving at the 94th Academy Awards held on Sunday.

For a recap, while presenting the best documentary feature at the Oscars, comedian Chris Rock made a joke about Will Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head.

Rock said he couldn’t wait to see Pinkett Smith, who has alopecia, star in ‘G.I. Jane 2′ which led Smith to go up on stage and slap Rock. Smith returned to his seat and shouted, “Keep my wife’s name out of your fu**ing mouth!”

After the incident, Smith who was announced Best Actor at the Oscars, was asked to leave the show but refused to do so; The Hollywood Reporter reported.

The actor’s actions were in violation of the Academy’s Standards of Conduct, “including inappropriate physical contact, abusive or threatening behavior, and compromising the integrity of the Academy,” The Hollywood Reporter quoted the statement released after a Board of Governors meeting.

The statement revealed that Smith could face suspension, expulsion or other sanctions if the board chooses to take action at the next scheduled meeting on April 18.

Additionally, Smith will receive 15 days’ notice of a vote as well as an opportunity to be heard by written response beforehand.

“Things unfolded in a way we could not have anticipated. While we would like to clarify that Mr Smith was asked to leave the ceremony and refused, we also recognize we could have handled the situation differently,” The Hollywood Reporter quoted Academy.

The Academy also apologised directly to Rock in the statement, as well as nominees, guests and viewers. For the unversed, while accepting his first-ever Oscar for best actor (leading role) in ‘King Richard’, Smith apologised to the Academy and fellow nominees, but did not mention Rock.

The Hollywood Reporter reported that the officers of the organisation’s Board of Governors had an emergency meeting a day later, and the full board met on Wednesday to discuss the incident.

One board of governor said there was broad support for Smith to be suspended or expelled from the Academy. “I think everyone unanimously feels what he did was out of control,” the person said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

“People want real consequence. Every member of every branch is reaching out to all their governors. It was an assault — and not only a physical assault, but an assault on the community,” told the source to The Hollywood Reporter.

The source added that “images of Smith and his family celebrating and dancing at the post-Oscar Vanity Fair party as if nothing had happened was an additional insult.” Following a rage of backlash over social media, including from the Academy, Smith took to Instagram on Monday to apologise to Rock.

The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that Rock declined to press charges against what happened at the Oscars 2022 ceremony.

  • Chris Rock ‘still processing’ Will Smith’s slap at the Oscars 2022

    By ANI

WASHINGTON: Comedian Chris Rock has finally broken his silence on Will Smith slapping him at the 94th Academy Awards ceremony. During a stand-up show in Boston on Wednesday, Rock walked out to two boisterous standing ovations that lasted roughly two minutes, The Hollywood Reporter said.

Rock, 57 opened his comedy with, “How was your weekend?” which was greeted with laughter, the outlet informed. The comedian then went on to speak briefly about “what happened” without directly mentioning the Oscars ceremony, or Will Smith.

“I don’t have a bunch of shit about what happened, so if you came to hear that, I have a whole show I wrote before this weekend, and I’m still kind of processing what happened. So at some point I’ll talk about that shit. And it’ll be serious, and it’ll be funny,” Rock said.

He continued, “I’m going to tell some jokes. It’s nice to just be out.” Rock later told the audience, “Except for some other pretty weird things, life is pretty good right now.” The comedian received big cheers at the show which ran about an hour, as per The Hollywood. For the unversed, this show marked Rock’s Ego Death World Tour, which runs through the fall.

This appearance came after Smith took to his Instagram on Monday to apologise for slapping the comedian onstage during the live Academy Awards show.

“I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness,” Smith wrote on Instagram.

“Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behaviour at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally,” Smith said in his apology. He also apologised to the Academy for his behaviour.

For the unversed, while presenting the best documentary feature at the Oscars, Rock made a joke about Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head.

Rock said he couldn’t wait to see Pinkett Smith, who has alopecia, star in ‘G.I. Jane 2’ which led Smith to go up on stage and slap Rock. Smith returned to his seat and shouted, “Keep my wife’s name out of your fu**ing mouth!”

A few minutes after the incident, Smith was announced Best Actor at the Oscars. The 94th Academy Awards took place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday.

  • Jim Carrey criticises Will Smith’s selfish slap and Academy’s reaction

    By PTI

LOS ANGELES: Hollywood star Jim Carrey has criticised Will Smith for assaulting Chris Rock during the 94th Academy Awards, saying he was “sickened” by the standing ovation that followed the actor’s best actor Oscar win.

Smith won the best actor trophy for his role in “King Richard” minutes after his infamous altercation with Rock where he slapped the comedian for a joke regarding wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair loss condition, alopecia, reported IndieWire.

After the slap, Smith returned to his seat and yelled to Rock, “Keep my wife’s name out your f***ing mouth.”

“I was sickened by the standing ovation (after his win). Hollywood is just spineless en masse and it really felt like this is a really clear indication that we aren’t the cool club anymore,” Carrey told CBS’s Gayle King while promoting his film “Sonic the Hedgehog 2”.

“The Mask” star said Smith “should’ve been” escorted out of the ceremony for slapping Rock, who declined to press charges.

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences officially condemned Smith’s actions the following day and has said they will take appropriate action against the actor.

According to Carrey, if he was in Rock’s place, he would have sued the actor because the video is going to be there forever.

“That insult is gonna last a very long time. If you want to yell from the audience and show disapproval or say something on Twitter (that’s fine). But you do not have the right to walk up on stage and smack somebody in the face because they said words.

(The slap) came out of nowhere because Will has something going on inside him that’s frustrated. I wish him the best. I have nothing against Will Smith. He’s done great things, but that was not a good moment.

It cast a shadow over everyone’s shining moment last night. It was a selfish moment.”

Smith apologised to the Academy and fellow nominees in his acceptance speech on Sunday but seemingly defended his action by saying, “love will make you do crazy things”.

He, however, issued a formal apology to the comedian the next day, saying, “Jokes at my expense are part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally. I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong.  am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be.”

Jada Pinkett, meanwhile, posted a brief Instagram statement that read: “This is a season for healing and I’m here for it.”

  • Will Smith-Chris Rock Oscars row: Academy says it will take ‘appropriate action’ over slap incident

    By PTI

LOS ANGELES: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has said that it is “upset and outraged” over Hollywood star Will Smith’s behaviour during the 2022 Oscars ceremony during which he slapped actor-comedian Chris Rock on stage.

AMPAS president David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson sent a letter to the Academy members, promising that the organisation will take “appropriate action” over the incident after an official process that would take a “few weeks”.

“Sunday’s telecast of the 94th Oscars was meant to be a celebration of the many individuals in our community who did incredible work this past year. We are upset and outraged that those moments were overshadowed by the unacceptable and harmful behaviour on stage by a nominee. To be clear, we condemn Mr. Smith’s actions that transpired Sunday night. As outlined in our bylaws, the Academy’s Board of Governors will now make a determination on appropriate action for Mr. Smith.”

As governed by California law regarding members of nonprofit organizations like the Academy, and set forth in our Standards of Conduct, this must follow an official process that will take a few weeks,” the letter read.

The live telecast of the 94th Academy Awards on Sunday was marred by the incident in which Rock cracked a joke at actor Jada Pinkett Smith’s expense and Smith responded by slapping the actor-comic on stage.

The incident started when Rock came on stage to announce the winners for best documentary feature award and made a tasteless joke about Pinkett-Smith, saying she could star in the sequel to “G.I. Jane”, in an apparent reference to her shaved head because of the autoimmune disorder alopecia.

An enraged Smith went up and hit Rock on the face, leaving the audience members as well as millions of viewers of the ceremony shocked.

Smith later won the best actor trophy for his performance in the movie “King Richard”.

He apologised to the Oscars organisers in his acceptance speech but not to Rock, who declined to press charges against Smith.

On Monday, the “Bad Boys” star publicly tendered an apology to Rock on Instagram.

The letter further stated that it will continue to update the members on “any developments, but we also ask that you respect your Board, Academy staff and the process as this unfolds so it can work in the considered way it was intended and mandated”.

“Please trust that the Board of Governors will conduct this process in a manner that is both expedient and respectful of all involved while maintaining the standards of the Academy,” the letter concluded.

In the immediate aftermath of the slapgate controversy, the Academy had condemned Smith’s actions and later launched a formal review into the incident that will go down as one of the most shocking moments in Oscars history.
