  • West Bengal extends Covid curbs till July 30, allows Metro Rail services on weekdays

    By PTI
KOLKATA: Keeping in mind the warning of experts about a possible third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, the West Bengal government on Wednesday extended the ongoing restrictions till July 30, but also announced certain relaxations.

Metro Railway services are allowed to resume operations with 50 per cent seating capacity on weekdays, a government order said.

The local train services, however, will continue to remain suspended except the staff special trains.

The restrictions, imposed on May 16, were last extended till July 15.

The order stated that public buses, taxis, autorickshaws have been permitted to operate with 50 per cent capacity.

Offices, both government and private, are also allowed to function with half the manpower, it said.

Gymnasiums and beauty parlours can also operate with 50 per cent strength from 11 am to 6 pm.

Only 50 people will be allowed to attend social gatherings such as weddings.

Vegetable markets can remain open from 6 am to noon, the order said.

  • Bengal post-poll violence: NHRC submits final report to Calcutta High Court

    By Express News Service
KOLKATA: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) submitted its final report on post-poll violence in West Bengal before a five-judge bench of Calcutta High Court headed by acting Chief Justice Rajesh Bindal on Tuesday.

The court asked the NHRC to give copies to the state government so that it may prepare its reply during the hearing on July 22.

The court also ordered the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) to conduct a DNA test of the body of BJP worker Abhijit Sarkar, who was allegedly strangled to death by a mob in north Kolkata after the victim’s family said they could not identify him. The court ordered the Command Hospital to conduct the second port-mortem for the DNA test.

The Trinamool Congress government received a jolt on July 2, when the court, taking a note of the NHRC’s interim report, observed in its order that the state was found on a “wrong foot” and had more to “conceal than to reveal” on the issue of post-poll violence. In its order, the bench said many suffered due to sexual violence and even minor girls were not spared.

Priyanka Tribrewal, the lawyer representing the victims of post-poll violence, told the court on Tuesday that members of the Sarkar family could not identify the decomposed body. The court said DNA samples from the corpse should be matched with the victim’s brother Biswajit Sarkar.

Representing the state, advocate general Kishor Dutta accused Sarkar’s family of not cooperating with the investigating agency. He said several attempts were made to record their statements were in vain.

Tibrewal said while recording statements under section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), Rs 600 was collected from each person for videography. The court wanted to know who is collecting this money and whether receipts are being issued. The matter will be heard on July 22, the day of the hearing.

On July 2, the court show-caused IPS officer Rashid Munir Khan, the deputy commissioner of police (south suburban division) after NHRC members were allegedly restricted and manhandled by a section of people when they arrived at Jadavpur to take stock of the situation.

  • Bengal receives 26,000 applications for student credit cards

    By PTI
KOLKATA: The West Bengal government has so far received over 26,000 applications for the student credit card scheme under which loans of up to Rs 10 lakh will be disbursed for higher studies, a senior official said on Tuesday.

The scheme was launched by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee last month to help needy students pursue higher studies.

Of the over 26,000 applications received till last week, nearly 6,059 are from students who hail from West Bengal but are studying outside the state, he said, adding around 16,800 applicants are males and 9,700 are females.

“It seems that the scheme has become quite a hit among students. We hope to receive more applications in the coming days,” the official said.

A student can apply for the education loan for a course for which he/she will be applying but not for one for which he/she has already paid to an institution, he said.

Banerjee had on June 30 launched the scheme under which pupils from class 10 onwards can apply for loans up to Rs 10 lakh as per their requirement.

Students can apply for the loan even while pursuing professional courses like MBBS, BTech, or diploma courses to enhance their skills.

They will not be required to provide any surety for the loan as the state government will be the surety.

The interest rate will be 4 percent and it may be reduced further if repayment is done within the study period.

Besides pursuing higher studies, students can apply for the loan even to purchase laptops, books or to pay tuition fees and boarding charges.

  • Rath Yatra low-key affair in Bengal amid COVID curbs

    By PTI
KOLKATA: Much like last year, the traditional gaiety on Rath Yatra was missing in Bengal on Monday as authorities at the much-revered Mahesh temple in Hooghly district cancelled all festivities in the wake of COVID-related restrictions, and ISKCON temples in Kolkata and Mayapur marked the occasion with muted celebrations.

At the Kolkata temple of International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), which had to put off its 50th year celebrations amid the pandemic-induced curbs, arrangements have been made for Lord Jagannath’s travel in a carcade, along with his divine siblings, as part of the rituals.

No chariot will be taken out on the streets, in a departure from tradition.

In Mayapur, the global headquarters of ISKCON, a makeshift Gundicha temple has been set up on the courtyard, where the three deities — Sri Jagannath, Baladev and Subhadra Devi — will be putting up for nine days.

In a similar vein, temple authorities in Mahesh performed all rituals, with just a handful of locals visiting the shrine to offer obeisance.

Smaller chariots rolled out on the premises of the temple to mark the journey of the deities to Gundicha temple.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee sent offerings to the deities at ISKCON on the occasion, official sources said.

  • ‘Exorcist’ arrested for raping girl in West Bengal’s Purba Bardhaman

    By PTI
BARDHAMAN: A self-proclaimed exorcist has been arrested for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl in West Bengal’s Purba Bardhaman district, police said on Saturday.

The incident took place on Friday evening when the survivor’s mother took her to the accused’s house in Ulara village in Memari police station area for exorcism as she was ill for a few days, an officer said.

As per the complaint lodged by the survivor’s mother, the accused took her daughter to a room on the pretext of curing her but instead raped the minor, he said.

The accused was produced before a court, which remanded him to five-day police custody, the officer said.

  • TMC protests across West Bengal over spiralling fuel prices

    By PTI
KOLKATA: Trinamool Congress members protested across West Bengal on Saturday against the spiralling fuel prices that are causing hardships for the common people amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Petrol is retailing at over Rs 101 per litre and diesel at more than Rs 92 in West Bengal, while domestic LPG touched Rs 861 per cylinder.

The protests were held in Dum Dum, Central Avenue and Chetla areas of Kolkata, Canning in South 24 Parganas, Chinsurah in Hooghly, and Malda, besides other parts of the state.

State Transport Minister Firhad Hakim said the Centre imposed enormous taxes on petroleum products, causing a lot of hardships for the common people.

Petroproduct prices were unregulated, allowing oil companies to raise prices to increase their profits so that their share prices also rise, he claimed.

In turn, this will help the Centre to sell the state- run oil companies to foreign investors, he said.

Hitting out at the Centre, leader of the Congress in Lok Sabha Adhir Chowdhury said his party has been demanding rollback of taxes to bring down the prices of petroleum products to ease the burden on the people.

The West Bengal government should also consider the reduction of tax on petroleum products, he said, adding that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee came to power with a huge mandate and should review this.

State BJP president Dilip Ghosh said that taking to the streets will not result in a reduction of the prices of petroleum products.

“Prices of petroproducts are linked to the international market. When the international market stabilises, prices in the country will also be moderated,” he said.

  • Mamata Banerjee ‘incidental beneficiary’ of highly polarised Bengal polls: Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury

    By PTI
KOLKATA: Senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury feels TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee is an “incidental beneficiary” of the highly polarised West Bengal assembly elections and not the “only anti-Modi face” capable of taking on the BJP in the next Lok Sabha polls.

Chowdhury also defends his frequent criticism of the TMC supremo, calling it the right decision for the benefit of his party.

Talking about the prospects of a broader anti-BJP coalition ahead of the Lok Sabha polls in 2024, the leader of the Congress party in the House, insists no opposition front can succeed without Congress’ participation.

“The elections in West Bengal this time were highly polarised on communal and regional identity. The people of the state who did not want the BJP en masse voted in favour of the TMC. The communal rhetoric and the threat and intimidation politics of the BJP leadership only helped Mamata Banerjee. Without taking away the credit for the fight she put up, I would say she is an incidental beneficiary in these elections,” Chowdhury told PTI in an interview.

Acknowledging that the TMC’s victory was “magnificent”, the Congress veteran, however, said many regional opposition leaders had helmed their parties to triumph over the BJP. “It’s true that she has put up a fight against the BJP and its election machinery. It’s a magnificent victory, no doubt about it. But at the same time, she is not the only regional leader who has defeated the BJP. Arvind Kejriwal, Lalu Prasad Yadav, M K Stalin, Pinarayi Vijayan, too, have done the same. So, saying that she is the only (credible opposition) face (who could take on the BJP’s might) would be an injustice to others,” he said.

The West Bengal Congress chief rejected suggestions by a section of his partymen that he was more vocal against Banerjee than the BJP. “I have been vocal against both the TMC and the BJP. Yes, I had to attack the TMC when I saw they were destroying my Bengal unit by poaching our representatives. Whatever I have done, I have done for my party. I don’t have any personal animosity with Mamata Banerjee,” he said.

He chose not to respond to a question as to why the top Congress leadership desisted from attacking Banerjee and largely stayed away from the election campaign. However, Chowdhury said if the Congress party forges an alliance with the TMC in future, the state unit will “lower its tempo” against Banerjee.

Responding to a query about some opposition parties intending to ally against the BJP, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) member asserted, “No opposition alliance will succeed without the presence of Congress in it.”

“The political landscape of our country is such that no opposition alliance against the BJP can succeed without the Congress. The Congress is still the biggest opposition party in the country with a pan-India presence,” he said.

On his party’s rout in the assembly polls in West Bengal, where it drew a blank, Chowdhury said the elections were completely polarised along communal and regional lines but hoped that the Congress, which ruled the state for more than two decades since independence, will revive soon.

Chowdhury noted that the Sitalkuchi incident in Coochbehar, where firing by central forces led to the killing of four Muslims during the polling, polarised minority voters. “The Sitalkuchi incident led to further polarisation as voters in Malda, Murshidabad (considered Congress strongholds) also voted for the TMC,” he said.

The Congress had fought the assembly polls in alliance with the CPM and Muslim cleric Abbas Siddiqui’s ISF. Except for ISF, which bagged one seat, the CPM-led Left Front and the Congress failed to open their account for the for the first time in assembly polls.

When asked whether the Congress will form alliance with with CPM and the ISF in future, too, Chowdhury categorically said, “No relations with ISF”. “We never had any relations with the ISF. It was CPM which shared their seats with them. The ISF had pitched candidates against us in many seats. We will have no relation with the ISF in the future, too,” he said.

Replying to a question about the recent media reports that former Congress president Rahul Gandhi will likely replace him as the leader of the Congress party in Lok Sabha, Chowdhury said he is not aware of any such move.

“I am not aware of any such development. I am a loyal soldier of the party. Whatever duty it assigns me, I would do my best. If Rahul Gandhi replaces me as the leader of our party in Lok Sabha, I would be the happiest person,” he said.

Lauding Rahul Gandhi’s leadership qualities, Chowdhury said the BJP deliberately tries to discredit him as it is “afraid of him”. “Every time there is a failure, everybody starts questioning Rahul Gandhi. The fact is that these failures are a collective responsibility. The Congress party has been on the decline since the 1989 Lok Sabha polls. So why single out Rahulji?” he said.

Speaking about Congress leaders leaving the party, with former President Pranab Mukherjee’s son Abhijit being the latest addition, Chowdhury wondered whether their deserting or joining a party would make any difference.

“Everybody is free to make their own decisions. But Abhijit Mukherjee leaving the party won’t have any impact. He was chief of the state’s campaign committee during the polls. You can’t show me a single statement from him criticising the BJP or the TMC during the elections,” he said.

  • John Barla’s elevation as Union minister proves BJP backs bifurcation of Bengal: Trinamool Congress

    By PTI
KOLKATA: The Trinamool Congress on Thursday alleged that the elevation of Alipurduar MP John Barla as Union minister proves that the BJP supports the bifurcation of West Bengal, a charge denied by the saffron party.

Barla, one of the key architects of the BJP’s making of inroads in north Bengal, had recently demanded a separate Union territory by carving out the region from the state. He was inducted into the cabinet of Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs.

“The decision to elevate John Barla as Union minister proves that the BJP supports his statement regarding the division of West Bengal. The saffron should come out clean on it. He (Barla) is a divisive personality…for last two years, I haven’t seen him being able to speak properly in the Parliament, what sort of minister he will make is anybody’s guess,” TMC leader Sougata Roy said.

State BJP chief Dilip Ghosh dubbed the TMC’s allegations as baseless and said the party doesn’t support the bifurcation of the state. “We don’t support any division of West Bengal. The party leadership and our prime minister felt that John Barla would make a good minister and can work for the people, so he has been inducted (into the cabinet),” he said.

While speaking to a Bengali news channel in the morning after taking charge, Barla declined to comment on his previous statement seeking bifurcation of the state. “I don’t want to comment on it. Now, I would like to work for the benefit of the masses. I will work towards the fulfilment of the demands of the people of north Bengal, nobody can suppress the demands of the masses,” he said.

Barla alleged that the people of West Bengal are not getting benefits of central schemes and as Union minister, he would strive to ensure that people get these benefits. “We want peace to return to West Bengal. The central schemes should be implemented,” he said.

Apart from Barla, three other MPs from West Bengal — one from north Bengal (Nisith Pramanik) and two from south Bengal (Subhas Sarkar and Shantanu Thakur) — have been inducted into the Union cabinet. Pramanik has been made MoS Home, and Sarkar and Thakur have been made MoS Education, and MoS Ports and Shipping respectively.

  • PM should hold ‘petrol ki baat’ instead of ‘Mann ki baat’: West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee

    By PTI
KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for “making a mess of the country’s economy” and urged him to hold ‘petrol and vaccine ki baat’ instead of ‘Mann ki baat’.

Referring to the proposed Union Cabinet reshuffle, the chief minister, during a press meet here, said the removal of Babul Supriyo from the council of ministers shows that “they (BJP government) have also lost it even before the arrival of their end” in 2024.

Noting that none of the letters she wrote to the PM evoked any response, Banerjee said that despite appeals for Jagdeep Dhankhar’s removal as governor, nothing was done about it. “The entire economy is in doldrums. Fuel prices are increasing everyday and the Union government is sitting idle. Our prime minister is only busy with his Mann ki Baat. He should instead hold petrol ki baat, diesel ki baat and vaccine ki baat,” she insisted.

Asked about the possibility of BJP MP John Barla’s induction in the Union ministry, weeks after he demanded a separate union territory for North Bengal, Banerjee said it will reflect the “divisive mindset” of the saffron party. “I won’t comment on ministry reshuffle. Will reshuffle end the woes of the people?” she added.

  • West Bengal minister cycles 38 km to assembly as petrol price crosses Rs 100 in Kolkata

    By PTI
KOLKATA: West Bengal’s Labour Minister Becharam Manna cycled a distance of 38 km from his home in the Hooghly district to reach the state assembly in protest as the petrol price crossed the Rs 100-mark in Kolkata.

Manna, the TMC MLA from Singur who rose to prominence with the agitation against the Tata Nano factory in late 2000s, was accompanied by a few party workers. He left home at 8 am and reached the assembly building in Kolkata around 12.30 pm to attend the ongoing session.

“Steep rise in fuel prices is the latest failure of the Narendra Modi government. Petrol price crossed the century-mark in Kolkata and we are protesting against this,” he told reporters.

The BJP-led government at the Centre is squeezing the common man in every possible way, while the Trinamool Congress government in the state is trying to give succour to the masses by its social welfare projects, he claimed.
