  • Sukanta Majumdar replaces Dilip Ghosh as West Bengal BJP chief

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: The BJP on Monday replaced its West Bengal unit president Dilip Ghosh with Sukanta Majumdar, Lok Sabha MP from Balurghat in the state.

Ghosh, also a Lok Sabha MP, has been made a national vice president of the party.

In a statement, the party also announced the appointment of former Uttarakhand governor Baby Rani Maurya as its vice president.

Maurya is a Dalit leader and is expected to play a role in the assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh, her native state.

The decision to bring in a new West Bengal president is being seen as part of the BJP’s efforts to reinvigorate its organisation in the state amid desertions by a number of its leaders who have switched over to the ruling Trinamool Congress.

  • Shocking things happening in state, cases being ‘en masse’ transferred to CBI: Bengal government tells SC

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: The West Bengal government Monday alleged before the Supreme Court that “shocking things” have happened in the state and cases were being transferred “en masse” to CBI including the dacoity cases.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the state, told a bench comprising Justices Vineet Saran and Aniruddha Bose that whenever there is an allegation that a probe is not being carried fairly, the court takes the facts into account and then transfers the case to CBI after a prima facie conclusion.

“In this case, en masse the cases were given to the CBI. Some of the most shocking things have happened. In one case, the man is alive. In the meantime, CBI is also investigating dacoity cases. All kinds of things are happening,” Sibal told the bench.

The top court was hearing a special leave petition filed by the state government alleging that it did not expect fair and just investigation by the central agency which is busy foisting cases against the functionaries of ruling Trinamool Congress Party.

As the hearing commenced, Sibal told the top court that he would need two-three hours to make submissions but the bench said that it won’t be able to hear the matter today due to lack of time and would take it up next week.

“By consent of the learned counsel for the parties, list on September 28, 2021 as a first case. The parties are permitted to file documents/additional documents by September 24, 2021 after serving the copy of the same on the other side,” the bench said.

Earlier, the state government had cast aspersions on the members of a committee formed by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to investigate the incidents of post-poll violence in the state.

The state government had said that the panel chief Rajiv Jain has served as Director of the Intelligence Bureau under the BJP-led government at the Centre.

It had also said that “Jain was subsidiary intelligence bureau chief, Ahmedabad from 2005 to 2008 when the honourable Prime Minister was the chief minister of Gujarat.”

Contending about another member, Sibal had said that Atif Rasheed served as Delhi State Prabhari BJP Minority Morcha and still tweets in support of BJP.

“Can you imagine these people have been appointed to collect the data? Is this a BJP investigating committee my Lords?” Sibal had said.

Commenting on Sibal’s submission, the bench said, “If somebody had a political past and if he lands up in an official position by that very fact will we treat him to be biased?”

Earlier, lawyer Anindya Sundar Das, one of the PIL petitioners on whose plea the High Court August 19 verdict came, had filed a caveat in the apex court urging that no order be passed without hearing him if the state or other litigant move appeals.

A five-judge bench of the High Court, headed by Acting Chief Justice Rajesh Bindal, had ordered a CBI investigation into all alleged cases of heinous crimes in West Bengal after the assembly poll results this year in which the ruling TMC came back to power.

As regards other criminal cases related to post-poll violence, the high court had directed that they be investigated by a Special Investigation Team under the monitoring of the court.

The high court bench, which also comprised justices I P Mukerji, Harish Tandon, Soumen Sen and Subrata Talukdar, had observed that there were “definite and proved” allegations that complaints of the victims of violence in the aftermath of the West Bengal assembly polls were not even registered.

Ordering the setting up of an SIT to probe all other cases, it had said that it will include Suman Bala Sahoo, Soumen Mitra and Ranveer Kumar, all IPS officers of the West Bengal cadre.

“All the cases where, as per the report of the Committee, the allegations are about murder of a person and crime against women regarding rape/attempt to rape, shall be referred to CBI for investigation,” it had said.

The high court has also directed the NHRC committee, constituted by its chairman on a direction by the five-judge bench, and any other commission or authority and the state to immediately hand over the records of the cases to the CBI to carry forward the probe.

The bench had said it will monitor the investigations by both the CBI and the SIT and asked the two agencies to submit status reports to the court within six weeks.

It had said that the working of the SIT will be overseen by a retired Judge of the Supreme Court for which a separate order will be passed after obtaining his/her consent.

In its ruling, the bench had said heinous crimes such as murder and rape “deserve to be investigated by an independent agency which in the circumstances can only be Central Bureau of Investigation”.

The bench had said the state failed to register FIRs even in some cases of alleged murder.

“This shows a pre-determined mind to take the investigation into a particular direction,” it had said.

“Under such circumstances investigation by an independent agency will inspire confidence in all concerned,” it had noted.

It had said allegations that the police had not registered a number of cases initially and that some were registered only after the court had intervened or the committee was constituted were found to be true.

It had observed that the facts in relation to the allegations made in the PILs are “even more glaring” as the incidents are not isolated to one place in the state.

The NHRC committee had on July 13 submitted its final report to the court.

An interim report of the NHRC committee had mentioned that Atif Rasheed, a member of the committee, was obstructed from discharging his duty and he and his team members were attacked by some undesirable elements on June 29 in Jadavpur area on the southern fringe of the city, the court noted.

The PILs had alleged that people were subjected to assault, made to flee homes and properties were destroyed during the violence in the wake of the assembly elections and sought impartial probe into the incidents.

  • CBI to interrogate West Bengal Minister Manas Ranjan Bhunia on Monday in I-Core ponzi scam case

    By PTI

KOLKATA: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will question West Bengal minister Manas Ranjan Bhunia at his residence on Monday in connection with its probe into the I-Core ponzi scam, a source in the agency said.

Bhunia, the minister for water resources investigation and development, will be quizzed at his home as he is a senior citizen, the source said.

The Trinamool Congress MLA from Sabang was allegedly seen in some of the public functions organised by the now-defunct I-Core which was charged with duping investors by offering them abnormally high returns on investments.

“Officials of the economic offences wing of the CBI will go to Bhunia’s home to quiz him in the I-Core chit fund case,” the source said.

Earlier, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had also served a notice to the minister in the same ponzi scam.

The CBI had on September 13 questioned West Bengal Industry Minister Partha Chatterjee for nearly two hours in connection with his alleged involvement in the I-Core chit fund scam.

Like Saradha and Rose Valley chit fund companies, I-Core raised money from the public by several fraudulent schemes floated by it.

The CBI had taken over the investigation of Saradha and other ponzi scam cases on the orders of the Supreme Court on May 9, 2014.

  • Excited about joining TMC, will work for Bengal’s development: Babul Supriyo

    By PTI

KOLKATA: Shortly after joining the TMC here, former Union minister and BJP MP Babul Supriyo on Saturday said he is extremely excited to be a part of the Mamata Banerjee-led party and will work hard for the development of West Bengal. Asked if he would quit as BJP MP from Asansol, Supriyo said he will follow the rulebook.

“When I had said two months back that I want to quit politics, I was serious about it. After getting this new opportunity, however, I decided to change my mind.”

“I am very excited about joining the TMC. I will work for the development of Bengal,” he stated. Supriyo also said that he will be meeting West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday.

“I am grateful to Abhishek Banerjee, (TMC national general secretary) and Mamata Banerjee for giving me an opportunity to work for the state.

“I will follow the rulebook; there is no point in holding on to the Asansol seat when I have joined the TMC,” he added. Last month, Supriyo had announced that he was quitting politics.

He was later persuaded against resigning as a Lok Sabha member even as the singer-turned-politician insisted that he would no longer be part of active politics.

  • Bhowanipore bypoll: BJP accuses Mamata Banerjee of violating COVID norms during campaigning

    By PTI

KOLKATA: The BJP on Thursday complained to the Election Commission alleging that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee violated COVID norms set by the EC while campaigning for the Bhowanipore bypoll.

Banerjee, also the Trinamool Congress supremo, is contesting from Bhowanipore where by-election will be held on September 30.

In a letter to the EC, Sajal Ghosh, the chief election agent of BJP candidate for the constituency, Priyanka Tibrewal, claimed that Banerjee, during a visit to a Gurudwara on Wednesday, was accompanied by a large number of supporters in violation of norms.

“On September 15, the TMC candidate violated the Covid guidelines and Model Code of Conduct while visiting the Bhawanipur Gurudwara,” Ghosh said in his letter to the Returning Officer for the assembly segment.

He claimed that her supporters also flouted Covid norms by not wearing masks and they did not use sanitiser. The TMC dubbed the allegations as “baseless and politically motivated”.

  • Centre upgrades VIP security cover of West Bengal BJP MP Arjun Singh

    By PTI

NEW DELHI/KOLKATA: The Union government has upgraded to ‘Z’ category the armed security cover of BJP MP from West Bengal Arjun Singh in the wake of recent incidents of hurling bombs at his house in North 24 Parganas district of the state, officials said on Wednesday.

The 59-year-old politician represents Barrackpore seat in the Lok Sabha.

The central security cover of Singh has been upgraded from the existing ‘Y+’ to ‘Z’ in the wake of recent incidents of violence reported against him and his family members, officials said.

The task is being rendered by armed commandos of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).

Less than a week after miscreants hurled bombs at Singh’s residence, similar explosions were reported outside his house Tuesday morning as the BJP leader claimed that members of the ruling TMC were trying to kill him.

Under the ‘Z’ category cover, the parliamentarian will now have about six to seven commandos, from the earlier two security personnel, every time he travels in the state and an additional contingent will provide security to his house.

  • Tripura rally: West Bengal BJP slams TMC’s ‘double standards’ on holding political programmes

    By PTI

KOLKATA: The BJP on Tuesday accused the Trinamool Congress of practising double standards in following the Disaster Management Act, claiming that the Mamata Banerjee-led party is not allowing the opposition to hold political programmes citing COVID-related restrictions in West Bengal but seeks to conduct a rally in Tripura.

The Tripura police on Monday denied permission to the TMC for holding a rally in Agartala on September 15 and 16.

The TMC, however, claimed that the saffron party has no moral right to talk about conducting political programmes in COVID time as it did not ask the Election Commission (EC) to club the last phases of the assembly election in April when there was a surge in coronavirus cases in the state.

“Despite following COVID-19 protocols, our numerous programmes in recent times were stopped by the police. They cite the Disaster Management Act to thwart the activities of the opposition. How can the same Trinamool vows to take out a rally in Tripura in violation of the Covid restrictions imposed by the administration?” West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh said.

After permission was sought to conduct a rally on September 15 in Agartala, the sub-divisional police officer (sadar) of West Tripura district told the TMC in a letter on Monday that it cannot be given as there is a scheduled programme of another political party.

In another letter issued also on Monday, the same officer said permission cannot be granted to hold the programme on September 16 “since there will be law & order commitment of Police in view of Viswakarma Puja” on Friday.

Ghosh also charged the TMC with making sustained efforts to disrupt the “peaceful situation” in Tripura. Senior TMC leaders of West Bengal are visiting the North-eastern state to build an organisational base in the run-up to the 2023 assembly election.

Reacting to Ghosh’s comment, senior TMC leader West Bengal Transport minister Firhad Hakim claimed that the BJP has lost the moral right to talk about the appropriateness of holding political programmes in COVID time.

“When there was a sharp spike in COVID cases in April, the BJP did not ask the EC to club the last phases of assembly polls and showed scant regard for public health. It was only the Trinamool Congress that repeatedly flagged the issue then,” Hakim said.

The TMC on Monday postponed its proposed rally led by its general secretary Abhishek Banerjee in the Tripura capital, after the police denied permission for holding the programme on September 15 and 16, prompting the TMC leader to claim that the BJP is “scared to death” of the Mamata Banerjee-led party.

  • TMC nominates Sushmita Dev for Rajya Sabha bypoll

    By Express News Service

KOLKATA: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Tuesday named Sushmita Dev, who recently joined the party after quitting the Congress, as its candidate for bypoll to a Rajya Sabha seat. The seat in the state fell vacant after Manas Bhunia quit the upper house having won assembly elections from Sabang in Paschim Medinipur.

We are extremely pleased to nominate @SushmitaDevAITC to the Upper House of the Parliament.@MamataOfficial’s vision to empower women and ensure their maximum participation in politics shall help our society to achieve much more!
    — All India Trinamool Congress (@AITCofficial) September 14, 2021
Bypoll to six Rajya Sabha seats, including the one in Bengal, will be held on October 4. “We are extremely pleased to nominate @SushmitaDevAITC to the Upper House of the Parliament. @MamataOfficial’s vision to empower women and ensure their maximum participation in politics shall help our society to achieve much more!” the party tweeted.

Dev, who was one of the national spokespersons of the grand old party and its women’s wing chief, switched over to the Mamata Banerjee-led camp last month. She has been assigned the job of looking after party’s functioning in Assam and Tripura.

Dev, a prominent face in Tripura politics where the TMC is trying to get foothold before the Assembly elections scheduled to be held in 2013, was overwhelmed with TMC’s announcement.

“I am extremely grateful to Mamatadi and Abhishek (Banerjee). I don’t know whether I deserve it or not, but I will do my best to take party’s vision forward. It is great to see that she (Mamata) wants more women in Parliament,” Sushmita said.

According to political observers, the TMC’s nomination is significant as Sushmita has been campaigning in Assam and Tripura with a goal to expand the party’s influence in the northeast.

  • Bhowanipore bypoll: ‘Mamata Banerjee hasn’t mention criminal cases in nomination paper’, alleges BJP

    By PTI

KOLKATA: The BJP on Tuesday lodged a complaint with the Election Commission, alleging that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee did not make a mention about pending criminal cases in her nomination papers for the Bhowanipore bypoll.

Sajal Ghosh, the chief election agent of the saffron party’s candidate for the constituency, Priyanka Tibrewal, wrote to the EC, raising objections to Banerjee’s declaration. “I beg to object to the nomination/declaration filed by Mamata Banerjee on the ground that the candidate has failed to disclose particulars of the pending criminal proceedings against her,” he said.

Ghosh, in his letter, also made a note of the number of cases filed at different police stations in Assam against Banerjee.

  • ‘TMC trying to kill me’: BJP MP Arjun Singh after another bomb explosion outside his residence

    By PTI

KOLKATA:  Less than a week after miscreants hurled bombs at BJP MP Arjun Singh’s residence in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas, similar explosions were reported outside his home on Tuesday morning, with the saffron party leader claiming that members of the ruling TMC were trying to take his life.

A police officer said that around 9:10 am, bombs exploded on a vacant patch of land, which is just about 200 metres away from Singh’s Bhatpara residence. “We are investigating the matter. Our officers are there,” he added.

@PMOIndia @HMOIndia pic.twitter.com/UIo6jd70HS
    — Arjun Singh (@ArjunsinghWB) September 14, 2021
The NIA on Monday took over the probe into the incident on September 8, which left the gate at the BJP MP’s residence partially damaged. Singh alleged that it was an attack planned by the Trinamool Congress to kill him, his family members and people close to him. “This is nothing but a planned attack. The TMC is behind this…they are trying to kill me and my people. It’s goondaraaj (lawlessness) in Bengal,” Singh claimed.

The TMC’s North 24 Parganas president, Partha Bhowmick, rubbished the allegations, and said that the BJP MP was in some way or the other responsible for the explosions outside his home.
