Jharkhand’s urban electorate is exercising its democratic right today in a massive polling exercise spanning 48 municipal bodies. Polling stations opened at 7 AM for the ‘city government’ polls, where 43.43 lakh voters will use ballot papers to elect leaders in municipal corporations, councils, and panchayats.

With 6100-plus candidates in the fray on a non-party basis, the elections employ color-coded ballots: pink for top posts like mayors, white for councilors. Security is beefed up at 4307 centers, especially the 3341 sensitive ones under CCTV watch. Voter-friendly measures include ramps, wheelchairs, and water stations.

A palpable excitement grips voters after years without such polls. Early morning rushes at booths in Ranchi, Dhanbad, and beyond suggest turnout could exceed 2018 figures – from 49% in Ranchi to peaks of 76% in some areas.

No voter ID? No problem. Passports, Aadhaar, job cards, and more serve as valid IDs if names match electoral lists. Ranchi’s 53 wards and mayor election (ST-reserved) draw over 10 lakh voters to 909 stations.

As polling continues till 5 PM, officials anticipate a vibrant democratic festival, culminating in results on February 27. This renewed engagement underscores the importance of local governance in Jharkhand’s development.
