Shakib Al Hasan: Defying Doubters with Willow Wizardry

As the Tigers took guard, whispers of Shakib’s perceived decline lingered in the air. Former Indian batting great Virender Sehwag had questioned the 37-year-old’s place in the T20 squad, claiming he should have retired from the format long ago. But Shakib, a man whose name is etched in

Bangladeshi cricketing folklore, had other plans.

With the willow in hand, he orchestrated a masterclass, compiling a sublime 64 off 46 deliveries, punctuated by nine boundaries that pierced the field with surgical precision. It was a knock that exuded authority, a reminder of the talent that has graced the international stage for over a decade.

“Virender Sehwag Who?” Shakib Retorts with Bat

When asked about Sehwag’s scathing remarks, Shakib’s response was as biting as his stroke play. “Who?” he quipped, his nonchalant demeanor serving as a fitting riposte to the Indian legend’s critique. This was a man who let his bat do the talking, a veteran whose hunger for success remains undiminished.

Turning Point for Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup Campaign

Shakib’s innings proved pivotal in Bangladesh’s pursuit of a place in the Super 8s. Chasing a modest total, the Netherlands faltered against the guile of the Tigers’ bowling attack, with Mustafizur Rahman and Mehidy Hasan Miraz leading the charge.

As the final wicket fell, the Bangladeshi faithful erupted in jubilation, their faith in Shakib vindicated. With four points from three matches, the Tigers now find themselves within touching distance of the coveted Super 8s, a testament to their resilience and unwavering spirit.

A Cricketing Titan Reaffirms His Greatness

In the aftermath of the victory, Shakib acknowledged the importance of his contribution, stating, “It was important for someone from the top four to bat throughout the innings. Happy with the way I contributed with the bat.” His words carried the weight of a man who has seen and conquered it all, a titan of the game who continues to reaffirm his greatness.

As the dust settles on this enthralling encounter, one thing is certain: Shakib Al Hasan has penned another chapter in his illustrious career, a chapter that serves as a reminder of his enduring class and unwavering determination. The doubters have been silenced, at least for now, as Bangladesh marches on, buoyed by the heroics of their talisman.

  • This is different Virat Kohli, one who has made more mistakes in one season than his entire career: Virender Sehwag

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: Virat Kohli has made “more mistakes in one IPL season” than he has in his entire 14-year international career, feels Virender Sehwag, who is seeing “different version” of the former India captain than what one is normally used to.

Kohli, who hasn’t scored an international hundred for more than two-and-half years, is enduring his worst slump, having scored 341 runs in 16 IPL games at a below-par average of 22.73 and two half-centuries.

In fact, he opened the innings in most games.

“This is not the Virat Kohli that we know. This is a different Virat Kohli playing this season. Otherwise the number of mistakes that he has committed this season, he hasn’t done it in his entire career,” Sehwag told Cricbuzz.

Sehwag, one of India’s greatest match-winners during his prime, however empathised with Kohli as he feels that India’s No.1 batter has got out in all possible manners in his desperate bid to try out different tactics.

“It can happen when you are not scoring runs. You try looking at various options to get out of bad patch and that leads you to getting dismissed in various ways. This season, Kohli has been out in all possible ways that one can think of,” the man with 17,000 plus international runs across formats, added.

In the second qualifier, Kohli chased a fast, rising delivery from pacer Prasidh Krishna, which was wide outside the off-stump, giving a simple catch to Rajasthan Royals skipper Sanju Samson behind the stumps.

“When you are out of form, then you have tendency of trying to middle each and every delivery. A batter thinks, if I can middle the ball, I will gain more confidence.

“However Virat did leave a lot of deliveries in that first over (from Trent Boult) but this is what happens when you are out of form. You tend to chase the deliveries wide outside the off-stump. You start following each of them. So when you have luck going your way, even in bad form, you will not edge it but here this didn’t happen,” the former opener explained.

What did catch Sehwag’s attention was his indecisive poke at the delivery.

“The delivery that he got out to — it had pace and bounce. So he could have either left it or may be just go hard at it. Who knows, it might have flown over keeper’s head but what he did was give simple catch practice. It was as if he was giving catching practice like we do for the slip fielders during net session,” he analysed.

Sehwag didn’t mince words when he said that Kohli did disappoint his millions of fans as one expects stars to own the big stage.

“He has certainly disappointed everyone. We all expect that in a big game, the big player will perform, he disappointed not only himself but also his legion of fans and the RCB fans,” Sehwag added.

In fact, former keeper Parthiv Patel raised a pertinent point about Kohli not having the cut shot in his repertoire, which at times comes in handy during lean patches.

“On a bouncy track, one needs to play the cut shot. But Virat never plays the cut shot, that’s not his technique. So the delivery that got him out, a very similar delivery was also bowled to Rajat Patidar, who slashed hard and it went over fielder’s head for four runs,” Parthiv said.

  • IPL 2021: Mohammed Shami’s lengths affected when he bowls in death overs, says Virender Sehwag

    By IANS
CHENNAI: Fast bowler Mohammed Shami tends to lose his length while bowling in the death overs in T20s which makes him less effective as compared to Jasprit Bumrah, said former India batsman Virender Sehwag.

Shami and Bumrah, often seen as spearheads of India’s pace battery, will face each other when their teams Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians face each other in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Friday.

“I think that Bumrah will be the one to watch out for. He’s an experienced bowler and yorkers are generally harder for batsmen to hit and he bowls them often,” said Sehwag on Flipkart’s Power Play with Champions.

“I think whenever Mohammed Shami bowls in the later overs of a match, it affects his yorkers and the lengths of his deliveries. Hence I feel that Bumrah will concede lesser runs in today’s game,” he further said.

Shami has gone wicketless in his last two matches for Punjab Kings against SunRisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals respectively. He was hit to all corners of the park by Shikhar Dhawan in the match against DC and ended his spell with an economy of 13.25, having conceded a whopping 53 runs in four overs.

  • Old is gold: Virender Sehwag lauds Amit Mishra for match-winning show against Mumbai Indians

    By ANI
NEW DELHI: Former India batsman Virender Sehwag lauded spinner Amit Mishra for giving a match-winning performance against Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Tuesday.

Leg-spinner Amit Mishra spun a web over Mumbai Indians before Shikhar Dhawan and Steve Smith played knocks of 45 and 33 respectively as Delhi Capitals registered a win at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Mishra had picked four wickets to help Delhi Capitals restrict Mumbai Indians to 137/9.

“Old is gold. Amit Mishra proving why he is the second-highest wicket-taker in the history of IPL with an incredible spell and @DelhiCapitals showing it is possible to chase in Chennai by being sensible,” tweeted Sehwag.

Delhi Capitals needed 15 runs in the last two overs and Shimron Hetmyer and Lalit Yadav ensured the side didn’t falter at the end. Moreover, Jasprit Bumrah’s two no-balls in the penultimate over made the job a lot easier for the DC batsmen.

Earlier, Mumbai Indians were cruising towards a mammoth total having scored 55 runs in the first six overs but Mishra wreaked havoc and dismantled the batting order removing Rohit Sharma, Kieron Pollard, Hardik Pandya, and Ishan Kishan.

“Obviously, I am feeling good with my performance as it came against the Mumbai Indians. Mumbai has the experience of playing here in Chennai but we managed to defeat them here. I am happy with my performance. I always try to bowl the ball outside Rohit’s zone and I do not give him pace. I always try to defeat him in flight so that he tries a shot that is not his strength,” Mishra had told Prithvi Shaw in a video posted on the official website of IPL.

  • IPL 2021: Virender Sehwag bats for Kane Williamson’s inclusion in playing XI after loss against RCB

    By ANI
NEW DELHI: Former India swashbuckling batsman Virender Sehwag has batted for the inclusion of New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson in the SunRisers Hyderabad’s playing XI after the side lost against Royal Challengers Bangalore at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Wednesday.

David Warner-led side lost both the matches in the tournament. In their first game, they lost by 10 runs against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and then suffered a six-run loss against Virat Kohli-led side.

Taking to Twitter, Sehwag shared the picture of Williamson and said “‘whom you are waiting for”.

“Whom you are waiting for, I am here,” he wrote in Hindi.

    — Virender Sehwag (@virendersehwag) April 14, 2021

Talking about Williamson’s fitness at the post-match press conference, SRH head coach Trevor Bayliss said, “Kane Williamson is out having a bit of a run now. He trained on one of the days – we had two days practice before this game and he practised on one of those days so he is coming along.”

Warner’s half-century had put SRH on course of a victory but Shahbaz Ahmed ran through their middle order to help RCB register a thrilling six-run win on Wednesday.

SRH were 115/2 before the start of the 17th over. But Ahmed scalped three wickets in that over and turned the tide in favour of the RCB. He bagged Jonny Bairstow (12), Manish Pandey (38) and Abdul Samad (0).

After 17th over, SRH’s score read 116/5 and the side managed to reach 143/9 in their allotted 20 overs but failed to cross the line.

  • Not many sides can defend 31 from 30 balls: Virender Sehwag hails Mumbai Indians’ effort against KKR

    By ANI
NEW DELHI: As Mumbai Indians achieved an improbable win against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Tuesday, former India batsman Virender Sehwag lauded the effort of Rohit Sharma’s boys.

Mumbai Indians defeated KKR by 10 runs thanks to a spirited bowling performance from the Rohit Sharma-led side. Russell’s five-wicket haul saw Mumbai Indians bundled out for 152 after batsman Suryakumar Yadav’s (56) quickfire knock. In response, KKR was restricted to 142/7.

“MI to KKR- Dekha aapne laparwahi ka.natija. To defend 31 from 30 balls with 7 wickets of the opposition in hand is something which not many sides can defend. Brilliant bowling display from @mipaltan,” tweeted Sehwag.

KKR was right on the track for an easy win but Rahul Chahar spun a web and removed the top four batsmen before Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult’s fiery spell handed Mumbai Indians the match by 10 runs.

Krunal Pandya bowled economically and just gave 13 runs in his four overs and picked the wicket of Shakib Al Hasan. Rahul Chahar returned with the figures of 4-27 in his four overs and he was named the Player of the Match.

“We both bowled well. Krunal did not give many runs in his spell. In the last match it was not like this but this time there was help from the wicket for spinners. We will play the main role if we get these kinds of wickets,” said Chahar during the post-match press conference on Tuesday.

Mumbai Indians will next take on SunRisers Hyderabad here at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday.

  • IPL is true measure of Indian dream: Virender Sehwag lauds Chetan Sakariya’s efforts

    By ANI
NEW DELHI: Rajasthan Royals young speedster Chetan Sakariya impressed one and all with his calm head against Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL) encounter on Monday and even former India batsman Virender Sehwag took notice of the performance.

In a high-scoring affair, Sakariya managed to leave a lasting impression as he returned figures of 3-31 even as Punjab Kings posted 221. The youngster managed to take the wickets of KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal, and Jhye Richardson.

“Chetan Sakariya’s brother died of suicide a few months ago, his parents didn’t tell him for 10 days as he was playing the SMA trophy. What cricket means to these young men, their families. IPL is a true measure of the Indian dream & some stories of extraordinary grit. Great prospect,” tweeted Sehwag.

Last month, Sakariya had lost his younger brother while he was playing the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for Saurashtra.

Sakariya was picked up by Rajasthan Royals for Rs 1.2 crore in the players’ auction held in February this year. In fact, Sakariya was a net bowler with the Virat Kohli-led franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) last year.

After the match against Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals’ Director of Cricket, Kumar Sangakkara also praised Sakariya for the composure exhibited by him.

“I think Chetan was just brilliant, his skill was on his display. It was so wonderful to watch a bowler always smiling and always in the game in a high-scoring game. He bowled with the new ball and he bowled at the death. Speaks a lot about his skill and attitude, it is great to have him in the side, he is a simple guy, he has had ups and downs in life. He is here to enjoy his cricket, our job is to support him. It is really good to see the control he had, the changeups. Chetan is a young man who I think will have a very good future,” said Sangakkara while replying to an ANI query during a virtual press conference.

Sanju Samson’s fighting hundred went in vain as Arshdeep Singh held his nerves in the final over to help Punjab Kings register a thrilling win over Rajasthan Royals at the Wankhede Stadium on Monday. KL Rahul’s calm and composed knock, aided by Deepak Hooda’s belligerent hitting, helped Punjab Kings post 221 in the allotted 20 overs. In response, Rajasthan Royals fell just four runs short of the target.

Rajasthan needed 5 runs off the final two balls, on the penultimate ball, Samson declined to take a single and on the final ball, he was dismissed by Arshdeep, giving Punjab Kings a win by four runs.
