— Virat Kohli (@imVkohli) April 13, 2021Harshal had delivered a stunning bowling performance before de Villiers’ masterclass took RCB home against defending champions Mumbai Indians in the opening game of IPL. Harshal had picked five wickets (three in the final over) to restrict Rohit Sharma’s side to 159.
Earlier in the day, Harshal said he benefitted from the clarity regarding his role given by the team management two weeks prior to the start of this year’s IPL.
“Clarity is always good. It helps you with your mental preparation, it helps you with your skill preparation. Whenever you have clarity, you know whatever situations you are going to face in the game and you can prepare mentally accordingly and in terms of skill so it is always good to have clarity about your role,” said Harshal while replying to an ANI query during a virtual press conference.
When asked how he feels with Kohli entrusting him to be the death over specialist, Harshal said: “I wanted to become a bowler or a player who takes on responsibility and the captain is confident enough to put me in those important situations and I look at it as a privilege. It is something I have looked forward to for a very long time and I am very happy that I am being put in those situations now.”
RCB will take on Sunrisers Hyderabad on Wednesday and will look to keep the winning momentum going.

IPL 2021: Virat and I set platform for ‘superstar’ AB de Villiers, says Glenn Maxwell
By ANI
CHENNAI: Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) batsman Glenn Maxwell has said that he along with skipper Virat Kohli set the perfect launchpad for AB de Villiers to finish off the game against Mumbai Indians in the tournament opener of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021.The Proteas batsman played a knock of 48 runs off just 27 balls with the help of four 4s and two 6s to help RCB defeat Mumbai Indians by two wickets in the tournament opener on Friday here at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
“It was nice to go out there and bat with the captain (Virat Kohli). Nice to not run him out in the first few balls, we were able to have a partnership and that was pretty cool. It would have been nice if one of us was there to finish it off but we set the platform for ABD to do his thing, he is an absolute superstar,” Maxwell said in a video posted on the official Twitter handle of RCB.
Speaking about his innings and the match, de Villiers said: “I am very happy with the result, it was a fantastic performance from all of us. We had a shaky start here and there, you can see we have not been together for a while but there were some special individual performances. At halftime, I knew it would be a hard total to chase, it is not an easy wicket. Luckily, we had some experience there to stay calm at the latter stages of the game, what a great win against trophy holders Mumbai Indians.”
Harshal Patel delivered a stunning bowling performance before AB de Villiers’ masterclass as RCB defeated Mumbai Indians by two wickets. He had picked five wickets (three in the final over) to restrict Mumbai Indians to 159 runs in the allotted 20 overs and as a result, he became the first bowler a take a fifer against Mumbai Indians in the IPL.
In response, RCB got over the line on the last ball, courtesy of some fine hitting by de Villiers in the death overs. For RCB, Maxwell and de Villiers played knocks of 39 and 48 respectively. Kohli also played a 33-run knock of 29 balls.
“Harshal was outstanding, I think his first over went for 15, to come back from that and record 5-12 in his last three overs, his final over was brilliant against the backend hitters. He used his yorkers, slower balls, and his execution under pressure was brilliant and massive reason why we were able to keep the score under 160. AB just assessed the conditions as he needed to do on that wicket. He went on to do AB things, some of the shots he played had the guys in awe. He is class,” said Maxwell.

“We brought Harshal in a trade from Delhi. He is relishing the responsibility and is clear with his plans. He was the difference today. He is going to be our death bowler. As a captain you want players with clarity, and he has that,” Kohli said at the post-match press conference.
About AB de Villiers’ 48 off 27 balls, Kohli said that the South African still intimidates the opposition.
“The opposition gets nervous about AB. We have depth in the batting which we want to utilize. AB is probably the only one in the team who is so versatile. And he does it on slow wickets what not many can do.”

Can’t think of more exciting game to start the season: Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Virat Kohli
By ANI
NEW DELHI: Ahead of the opening game of the 2021 Indian Premier League (IPL) season against Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) skipper Virat Kohli said that he expects a great game against the defending champions and added that the side will focus on their skills and strength. The 14th edition of the IPL will commence on Friday with rivals Mumbai Indians locking horns with Kohli-led RCB at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
“I truly believe that we have to focus on our skills and our strengths as a side. Mumbai, obviously, is a champion team they know how to win this competition, we know the strength of their team so if focus too much on that then we are not gonna focus on what we can do. At the end of the day, you are playing cricket which is played on the day in the moment and you could be better than any other guy in the world at that moment,” Kohli said in a video posted by the RCB on their official Twitter handle.
“Coming up against Mumbai is always an exciting challenge. Last year, we had two exciting games and we won one and they won the second one which was obviously close and they came through because they have such a strong team. The first one was a cliff-hanger as well big scores and Super Over. We expect a great game to start off the IPL. I can’t think of a more exciting or highly skilled intense game to start off the IPL,” he added.
RCB’s star player AB de Villiers added that with some new faces in the squad it will a tough game for Mumbai Indians to get over the line. “We all are very excited and Mumbai Indians are fantastic. We know we are up against experienced players in the line-up so do we, I’m very excited to see what we made off. We got some new faces this year, good experience with them. Daniel Christian, Maxwell coming into the set-up Dan Sams, Kane Richardson. I can name all the guys. I know it is a tough game first up but I think it is going to be tough for Mumbai as well,” De Villiers said.
RCB support staff also look forward to the game against the five-time champion side Mumbai.
“We know we have to play well, we got some good match-ups against them. Last year, we played nicely against them and it was 1-1. We hit our opportunities in both games so we look forward to that,” Director of Cricket Mike Hesson said.
“Everyone is pumped and ready to go. We had a good week in Chennai and managed to get the most out of our boys. Really good feel, a lot of energy. There is always excitement for the first game of the IPL. Boys are gonna be up playing against Mumbai,” head coach Simon Katich added.

IPL 2021: Formidable MI aim for hat-trick, Virat Kohli aims to break RCB deadlock behind ‘closed doors’
By PTI
CHENNAI: Rohit Sharma has a legacy to defend, Virat Kohli would be looking to create one while a “been-there-done-that” Mahendra Singh Dhoni seems ready to pull off a fresh trick when the Indian Premier League starts here on Friday, cooped up in a bio-bubble as a raging pandemic wreaks fresh havoc. Two editions of IPL within a space of five months isn’t an ideal situation for all the stakeholders.
But for the fans at large, exhausted by the second wave of COVID-19 with cases going past the one lakh mark daily, watching towering sixes, toe-crushers and new talents unearthed will be a welcome diversion in the next seven weeks.
The opening encounter will be between defending champions Mumbai Indians and under-achievers Royal Challengers Bangalore here and the big-hitters on both sides will ensure that necessary fireworks will be there even if fans are absent from the stands thanks to the pandemic.
The virus has cast its shadow on the league in the build-up stage with some positive cases among both players and support staff.
But with a strict bio-bubble in place for the games, the BCCI would be hoping for a smooth run just like the previous edition in the UAE.
If one looks at the bigger picture, the 14th edition of IPL assumes greater significance as it is being held in a T20 World Cup year and that too in the sub-continent.
If Kohli will keep a ‘Hawk Eye’ on the performances of his probable list of players, it won’t be any different for an Eoin Morgan or a Kieron Pollard, who would also be preparing for the mega-event while giving it their all for their respective franchises.
For Rohit, the most successful captain in the ‘IPL Universe’ with an unprecedented five titles, he could well walk away with a sixth trophy and the first title hat-trick of this league.
Mumbai Indians, perhaps in the near two decade existence of Twenty20 format, is a side that will be remembered for its aura.
If Rohit fails, then Quinton de Kock will certainly succeed.
If both fail, Ishan Kishan and Surya Kumar Yadav could scare the daylights out of the opposition.
And if the top-order is blown away, then the indomitable Pandya brothers (Hardik and Krunal) will be on the rivals’ case.
On the outfield, Kieron Pollard will save those extra runs apart from the trademark big hits always expected of him and also bring in the change of pace suited for the Chennai track.
Trent Boult, with his swing, and Rahul Chahar, with his googlies, will also test the batsmen.
Mumbai Indians can only lose on their bad days and on good days, they are going to be a nightmare as England captain Michael Vaughan has already warned.
Rohit’s opposite number is the national captain, who is ready to open once again but the squad composition of RCB doesn’t inspire the highest confidence.
Glenn Maxwell has again been picked for a bomb and New Zealand’s Kyle Jamieson has been made an overnight multi-millionaire by the franchise despite him being untested on Indian dust-bowls.
Devdutt Padikkal will be in his second season with teams analysing him way more and Yuzvendra Chahal seems to have lost his mojo.
Mohammed Siraj and Navdeep Saini do not inspire the highest confidence in in white ball cricket at least despite their gutsy performances in Australia early this year.
Amid all this, Dhoni will be quietly smiling and may be planning differently as it will be a placid Wankhede where CSK will be playing Delhi Capitals instead of sluggish Chepauk on Saturday.
The return of seasoned Suresh Raina, which opens up an option to play Imran Tahir in most games, and the presence of Moeen Ali and Sam Curran as floating all-rounders gives CSK a better look than last time.
Dhoni’s faith in uncapped Krishnappa Gowtham also needs a bit of validation.
As Dhoni brings on his years of IPL leadership experience, his ardent “fan” and “disciple” Rishabh Pant is ready to chart his own destiny as a Delhi Capitals leader while taking inspiration from his illustrious senior’s captaincy.
Pant 2.0 after his Gabba heroics is the most confident man in Indian cricket currently and with a batting line-up that has Prithvi Shaw, Marcus Stoinis, Shimron Hetmyer along with the experience of Steve Smith and Ajinya Rahane, Capitals would like to finish one better than last time.
Kagiso Rababda and Anrich Nortje’s cobtribution will be as important as Ravichandran Ashwin, Amit Mishra and Axar Patel’s bowling.
Sunrisers Hyderabad is one of the most low profile teams which has been known for on-field exploits.
A superb assortment of foreign players comprising the prolific David Warner in batting and world’s best T20 bowler Rashid Khan along with Kane Williamson, Jason Holder, Jonny Bairstow and Jason Roy makes them a contender.
Kolkata Knight Riders would expect that Andre Russell gets his six-hitting prowess back while Varun Chakravarthy is more than a one-season wonder.
Eoin Morgan, the best white ball international skipper on view, would look for a settled batting order while praying that Sunil Narine isn’t again called for a suspect action.
For Punjab Kings, the owners would hope that change in the name brings about a change in luck but a lot would depend on skipper KL Rahul’s performance.
He wouldn’t mind another ‘Orange Cap’ while Mohammed Shami would like to make a roaring comeback in international cricket.
Chris Gayle, in between, is sure to provide entertainment but the team is certainly not title contender to start with.
For Rajasthan Royals, the absence of Jofra Archer first up will certainly rob them off initial momentum and with another wobbly Indian line-up under an inconsistent Sanju Samson at the helm, the heavy-lifting is going to be done by Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler and Chris Morris.
Still, a play-off berth looks highly unlikely as of now.

Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers’ presence will hopefully allow Glenn Maxwell to have a good IPL, feels Daniel Vettori
By ANI
NEW DELHI: Former New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori said that Glenn Maxwell will have an amazing season in the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) with the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) as the Australian all-rounder will feel less pressure while playing with skipper Virat Kohli and star batsman AB de Villiers. In IPL 2021, Maxwell will don RCB colours after he was bought by the franchise for Rs 14.25 crore. In the past, Maxwell has represented Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals and Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings).
“The emphasis normally is on AB and Kohli, and Maxwell in a way can fly under the radar. Hopefully, that lack of pressure will allow him to have an IPL that everyone expects him to most years,” ESPNcricinfo quoted Vettori as saying.
Former RCB coach further said that responsibility brings the most out of Maxwell and added that he should be part of the leadership group along with Kohli and De Villiers.
“Where he’s been successful, particularly at Melbourne Stars, he’s been engaged, he’s been captain and he’s been the senior player. He’s been given a lot of responsibility and I think that’s where teams tend to get the best out of him. Even though de Villiers and Kohli are the focal points, if they can spread that leadership across him, I think that will be the best way to utilise him.”
Maxwell just managed to accumulate 108 runs off 13 games last season. The all-rounder also failed to hit a single six for the first time in his eight-season IPL career. Maxwell will hope that the change in the franchise will bring a change in fortune as well for him.
IPL 2021 will commence on April 9 with Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) locking horns in the tournament opener.

Virat Kohli took to social media to congratulate the “whole team” for their eight-wicket win against Australia, in the second Test match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The win helped the visitors level the four-match series at 1-1. Kohli, who returned home after the first Test match, took to Twitter and wrote, “What a win this is, absolutely amazing effort by the whole team. Couldn’t be happier for the boys and specially Jinks who led the team to victory amazingly. Onwards and upwards from here”.
India sealed the win on Day 4, with youngster Shubman Gill putting in a stylish batting display. He scored an unbeaten knock of 35 runs from 36 balls, and also slammed seven fours.
Earlier on Day 4, Australia were bowled out for 200 in their second innings, and had a slender lead of 69 runs. Although, India lost two early wickets in Mayank Agarwal and Cheteshwar Pujara, stand-in captain Ajinkya Rahane gave Gill company, to steer the visitors to a resounding victory.
It is worth noting that Rahane had also slammed a century during India’s first innings of the second Test match.

Virat Kohli and Ellyse Perry named ICC players of the decade
The awards, held in place of the usual end-of-year ceremony due to the effects of Covid-19 on the fixture calendar, were primarily decided by a panel of former players and experts, with a 10 per cent weighting on a public vote.
Kohli claimed the Sir Garfield Sobers Award for his performances across all formats and also scooped the ODI cricketer of the year, while Perry celebrated a hat-trick by taking the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Award for women’s cricketer of the decade alongside the ODI and T20 prizes
Australia’s Steve Smith and Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan prevented Kohli from a similar clean sweep, winning the Test and T20 gongs respectively.
Kohli was also named captain of the ICC’s Test team of the decade, and has been named the captain of the Test team of the year in each of the past three years.
