  • Crakk Movie Review: Badass Vidyut Jammwal’s Sports-Actioner Is Delightfully Confusing; And No, Nora Fatehi Doesn’t Dance but… Movies News

    Movie: Crackk

Cast: Vidyut Jammwal, Arjun Rampal, Nora Fatehi, Amy Jackson

    Director: Aditya Datt

    Stars: 2/5

In an era of careless and easily forgettable action films, Vidyut Jammwal, at 43, in ‘Crakk’ leaves some mark by carrying out outrageous stunts for our viewing pleasure. The movie is intriguing. And unbelievable. In this actioner, Nora Fatehi does not dance but acts (or maybe just tries), Arjun Rampal does not smile and Vidyut Jammwal’s thirst trap is to die and live for. Remember the recent nude photoshoot? Yep, our VJ does not disappoint in the film. Go watch, it releases in cinemas on the 23rd of February. After so many ‘gritty’ franchises and ‘message-oriented’ films, ‘Crakk’ barely attempts to strike a balance between memorable action sequences and sport. Guess what? ‘Crakk’ touches upon father issues, whopping cash prizes, ‘Khatron Ke Khiladi’ like do-or-die ‘sports’ stunts, nuclear bombs, geopolitics, but doesn’t really have any layer(s). That’s a shame because the movie rises but then almost immediately drops. Then, Dev (Arjun Rampal) enters wearing nothing but a dungaree and that compensates. ‘Crakk’ brings so much to the table that it’s confusing. So confusing, that your brain snoozes, and you end up laughing at the goof-ups of the narrative, editing, and a very shallow storyline.

    The Plot

The strangely cloudy plot starts with Siddharth Dixit, aka Siddhu (played by Vidyut Jammwal). A Mumbai slum dweller, Sidhu, is hard-bent crazy about extreme sports. Amid action sequences, Sidhu is often called ‘crack’ for his potential to attempt extreme stunts. Hence, begins the journey of all ‘crack-heads’ to win in ‘Maidaan’, an underground survival sports competition. The ultimate showrunner of ‘Maidaan’ is none other than – Dev (Arjun Rampal) – the champion who defeated Siddhu’s elder brother to death years ago. The plot twists loopily and Siddhu’s purpose drifts away from just winning ‘Maidaan’ to finding out the truth about his brother’s demise. Soaring the temperature at ‘Maidaan’, enters Alia (Nora Fatehi) – a good-looking influencer and Sidhu’s love interest. In the middle of all the poor-Hindi-speaking international actors, homie girl, Jamie Lever provides relief with fun ‘Mumbaiya’ one-liners and punches.

Want To Watch It For Action?

After breaking my head over its ever-changing plot, concluding, the film is mainly meant to showcase cool stunts. In bits and pieces, it does make for a thrilling cinema but just like most action films, it digs up a visible hole. Both Vidyut Jammwal and Arjun Rampal are badass, brilliant action heroes. Glazed with heart-stopping sequences, it feels like being in an amusement park at times but be prepared for a very, very interrupted ride. On the brighter side, some utterly bonkers mid-air action sequences will make your head explode with rap-based musical design.

Come on, if you have nothing else to do.

  • Good to see Tiger Shroff, Vidyut Jammwal doing their own stunts: Thai martial artist-actor Tony Jaa

    By PTI
MUMBAI: Thai martial artist-actor Tony Jaa admires Bollywood stars Tiger Shroff and Vidyut Jammwal for creating their own unique style in action and stunts.

Jaa, who is known world over for his martial arts techniques and received international recognition with Thai film “Ong-Bak: Muay Thai Warrior”, said it is important to represent one’s culture.

“Tiger Shroff is great, I met him in Thailand. I also met Vidyut Jammwal and I know him really well. He’s crazy. He is doing his own stunts. It is really good to see stars do it all on their own because you have to represent your own culture, represent something special like (about) you,” Jaa (44) told PTI during a group interview on Zoom.

Citing the example of his popular “Ong-Bak” franchise, Jaa said, through this film he felt happy to represent his culture, his learnings of martial arts. “This is from my heart. I can’t believe the movie is really a success and people know Tony Jaa and know my country. I am very proud. That is how it should be,” he said.

Jaa said that he was inspired to learn martial arts after watching films of legendary martial artist-actors Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan. Jaa started his training Muay Thai, a combat sport at the age of ten. He acted as a stunt double in Thai movies and later appeared in Hollywood movies with James Wan’s “Furious 7” and was also part of Vin Diesel-starrer “XXX: Return of Xander Cage”.

Jaa, who is awaiting the release of “Monster Hunter” in India, said working in Hollywood was like going back to school and learning newer things as their working technique is different than Thai film industry.

“They (Hollywood) like technology, CGI, their style is very different. I didn’t know how to use technology to do stunts. Now, I know. Working in this format of Hollywood movies was also a good experience for me,” he said, adding, he will continue to act both in Asian and Hollywood films.

Jaa said Hollywood uses a lot of technology to offer the best viewing experience to the audience. “Hollywood movies are big, they have big budgets, they use technology to create the best international movie. Thai movies have small budgets and fights. It’s different also in terms of story, culture,” Jaa said.

The actor was overjoyed when Paul WS Anderson offered him “Monster Hunter”as he has been a fan of “Resident Evil” franchise. “I’m a big fan of Paul Anderson and Milla Jovovich. This is the first time I am working on a movie with Paul. It is like my dream come true. This is a big role for me, the character is really big. And Paul also told me he wanted to work with me as he has created something new for me. In the movie, we have to fight out with a monster,” he said.

Jovovich plays army captain Natalie Artemis, while Jaa is said to be the male lead, a man named The Hunter. “Monster Hunter”, which also stars Tip “TI” Harris, Meagan Good, Diego Boneta, Josh Helman, Jin Au-Yeung and Ron Perlman, was released in the United States on December 18, 2020.

The Sony Pictures Entertainment movie is scheduled to be released in the Indian theatres on February 5.
