The Indian Navy made headlines at the WEST 2026 conference in San Diego, where Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan, Deputy Chief of Naval Staff, spearheaded a delegation to deepen ties with the US amid Indo-Pacific tensions. This annual gathering of naval leaders provided a vital platform for strategic dialogues on regional security.

As per updates from the Indian Embassy, the participation highlighted the robust India-US maritime partnership. Vice Admiral Vatsayan contributed to a key panel discussion titled ‘Indo-Pacific: Allies and Partners – Readiness, Integration, and Future Fight,’ addressing interoperability and emerging threats.

The visit extended to substantive interactions with top defense industry executives, exploring avenues for innovation and collaboration. Meetings with US Navy’s top brass, including operational heads and fleet commanders, along with facility tours in San Diego, paved the way for enhanced operational synergy and shared maritime goals.

Meanwhile, in a landmark achievement, the Indian Navy took the helm of CTF-154, a multinational task force under CMF framework involving 47 nations. The handover ceremony on February 11 in Bahrain’s Manama was led by US Vice Admiral Kurt A. Renshaw, with Indian representation by Vice Admiral Tarun Sobti.

Commodore Milind M. Mokashi assumed command, succeeding the Italian Navy officer, in the presence of international military dignitaries. Launched in May 2023, CTF-154 emphasizes training in critical areas like maritime domain awareness, international maritime law, interdiction ops, rescue missions, and leadership training. This milestone reflects India’s expanding influence in fostering collective maritime security across vital sea lanes.
