Bangladesh braces for a critical verdict as a special tribunal is set to rule on charges against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, is reportedly seeking the death penalty for the 78-year-old politician, accusing her of orchestrating crimes against humanity during widespread anti-government protests last year. With the decision anticipated within 24 hours, national security forces have been placed on high alert, reflecting concerns over potential public unrest and nationwide instability. The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT-BD) is expected to deliver its judgment concerning Hasina and several other former officials, including ex-Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun. Charges range from murder to torture, stemming from the crackdown on the July 2023 student-led uprising that led to the downfall of Hasina’s Awami League government. While Kamal is also facing charges, Al-Mamun has reportedly become a state witness. The prosecution has explicitly called for the death penalty for Hasina, labeling her the ‘mastermind’ of the violent suppression. Supporters of the former premier maintain that the charges are politically motivated, designed to remove her from the political arena. The interim government’s request for Hasina’s extradition from India remains unanswered. The unfolding situation presents a tense and uncertain future for Bangladesh, with potential implications for regional dynamics.

The Rajasthan High Court has overturned the 2021 Sub-Inspector (SI) recruitment examination following an investigation into widespread collusion. This decision comes after years of appeals and protests from students who alleged irregularities in the examination process. The court previously halted the passing-out parade and appointments of trainee sub-inspectors. The SI Recruitment Examination was intended to fill 859 positions. Investigations conducted by the Special Operations Group (SOG) of Rajasthan uncovered the use of dummy candidates and other forms of cheating. Over 150 individuals were arrested in connection with the case. Petitioner Harendar Neel stated that the court found evidence of the paper being leaked on various platforms, including WhatsApp and social media, with the involvement of a Bluetooth gang. The court deemed it inappropriate to continue the recruitment process. Advocate OP Solanki also described the verdict as historic, highlighting the public’s growing understanding of justice. The decision was reached after four years, and it was met with widespread satisfaction.
