Kerala politics heated up as a Kannur court on Tuesday turned down bail for five KSU activists charged with attempting to murder Health Minister Veena George. The minister, spotted back at work wearing a cervical collar, embodies the LDF’s narrative of opposition aggression just months before state elections.

The dramatic confrontation occurred last Saturday at Kannur Railway Station. Amid a black flag demonstration protesting government policies, accused students allegedly assaulted George by pressing something sharp against her throat. Rushed to local hospitals, she was later shifted to a medical college but left against advice to travel home—a grueling 350+ km journey in her official vehicle.

In court, defense counsel insisted no lethal intent existed: no arms were found, police couldn’t identify any assault tool, and the minister’s delayed statement undermined claims of severity. They portrayed it as standard protest fervor. But prosecutors pushed for custody, citing pending CCTV reviews that might reveal more attackers and evidence of a discreet weapon used to choke her neck.

The magistrate sided against bail, remanding the accused until March 5. George’s reappearance in office gear—a cervical collar reminiscent of her 2021 election trail injury—has sparked controversy. Critics from Congress and allies label it political theater, with online backlash accusing her of exaggeration. Supporters see it as proof of targeted violence by desperate opposition youth wings.

With assembly polls looming, this episode spotlights Kerala’s combative political culture. Student unions like KSU have long clashed with ruling regimes, but allegations of murder plots cross a dangerous line. As investigations deepen, the incident could sway voter sentiment, testing the LDF’s hold amid accusations of leniency toward ruling party agitators.

Kerala’s political temperature soared as Opposition Leader VD Satheesan unleashed a blistering critique of Health Minister Veena George, declaring her the butt of jokes statewide after her party allegedly peddled…

Kerala’s political temperature soared as Opposition Leader VD Satheesan unleashed a blistering critique of Health Minister Veena George, declaring her the butt of jokes statewide after her party allegedly peddled a phony assault tale.

During a media interaction in Adoor on Friday, Satheesan quipped that George’s name alone triggers chuckles among citizens. He accused CPI(M) of orchestrating a massive misinformation campaign, falsely stating the minister suffered injuries in a KSU demonstration at Kannur railway station mid-week, sparking riots province-wide.

The fallout included a bomb hurled at a KSU leader’s residence and sham murder attempt cases filed to incarcerate activists. Currently, five KSU members languish in jail over accusations of protesting George’s arrival at the platform with black flags.

Satheesan laid bare the lies from George, Speaker AN Shamseer, CM Pinarayi Vijayan, and CPI(M)’s MV Govindan regarding the episode. The invoked ‘attack’ was pure invention to justify turmoil, he maintained.

On his side, campaign posters were torched in Pathanamthitta, Kollam, and the capital, injuring innocents and bombing dwellings. He rubbished allegations of KSU youth manhandling George’s dupatta and arm as groundless ploys for unrest.

Labeling the saga a smokescreen for healthcare shortcomings, Satheesan noted the medical report omitted any assault wounds. Surgery buzz aside, no admission was needed—exposing the theatrics to all, including press and rail authorities.

He called for dropping charges against KSU cadre and prosecuting Govindan for fomenting disorder. The UDF will battle on dual fronts, he affirmed, pressing CPI(M) to cease hostilities at once.

Thiruvananthapuram lights the way for gender equality with the Cabinet’s approval of the revamped Women’s Policy 2026. Minister Veena George revealed that this policy pioneers protections for senior citizens’ dignity, making it a trailblazer among Indian states.

Kerala’s elderly population has surged to 16.5% and is expected to hit 23% by 2036, underscoring the urgency of these measures. The policy was meticulously developed through extensive consultations.

An 11-member Gender Council held nine meetings, organized a seminar, engaged 72 experts across eight focus areas, and gathered insights from nearly 300 women from varied backgrounds to shape this robust document.

Eliminating biases rooted in caste, religion, or gender is central, alongside ensuring women’s equal stakes in governance, legislation, and key committees. The framework pushes for gender parity in jobs, schooling, and medical services.

Special safeguards for aging women respond to evolving demographics, while bolstering anti-violence systems takes center stage. Tackling digital threats like cyber harassment and online abuse features prominently, with firm enforcement promised.

The film and media sectors will benefit from Hema Committee guidelines to foster secure workspaces for women. Implementation will be monitored by a Chief Minister-led committee, supported by dedicated gender focal points in every department.

As Kerala navigates its demographic transitions, this policy promises a more just society, empowering women at every life stage and redefining state commitments to equity.
