  • Former Uttarakhand CM Harish Rawat bats for Bharat Ratna for Sonia Gandhi, Mayawati

    NEW DELHI: Former Uttarakhand chief minister Harish Rawat on Wednesday called for bestowing India’s highest civilian honour, Bharat Ratna, on Sonia Gandhi and Mayawati, saying that while the Congress president has taken the honour of Indian womanhood to new heights, the BSP chief had inspired millions of oppressed.

    Tweeting about his views of bestowing Bharat Ratna on the two leaders, he said one can agree or disagree with Sonia Gandhi’s politics, but cannot deny the fact that she has taken the Indian women’s honour to new heights.

    Asked about his tweet posted on Tuesday, Rawat told PTI on Wednesday that he had expressed his views in his personal capacity as a citizen of the country and not as a political leader.

    “The way she (Gandhi) adopted Indian womanhood is an example. When the government was formed, she worked for providing so many rights to people from right to work to right to information. The way she has adhered to culture, family values and social obligations, it enhanced the honour of Indian womanhood,” Rawat said.

    Hailing Mayawati, the Congress general secretary said she became chief minister of Uttar Pradesh after struggle and gave inspiration to crores of Dalit as well as confidence to the oppressed.

  • After Uttarakhand CM, BJP chief apologizes to Leader of Opposition Indira Hridayesh on Twitter

    DEHRADUN: After Uttarakhand Chief Minister apologized to Leader of Opposition and Congress MLA Indira Hridayesh, BJP state president also took to Twitter to ‘respectfully take his statement back’.

    Bhartiya Janta Party state president Bansidhar Bhagat wrote on Twitter, “Indira Hridayesh ji is a respected leader of the state and verbal exchanges are natural due to electoral territory being the same. I did not intend to hurt her personally, if she is hurt I take my statement respectfully.”

    Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat also went public in apologizing to Hridayesh after Bhagat’s statement in which he called her ‘Budhiya’ (old lady) and ‘Doobta Jahaz’ (Sinking Ship) recieved backlash.

    Rawat tweeted at around 1 am in the morning on Wednesday saying that he is ‘very sad’ to hear about the remarks made against the 80-year-old Leader of Opposition and will personally call her too to seek further apology personally. 

    “Respected Indira Hridayesh ji, I am sad beyond anything today. Women are highly respectable to us. I personally apologise to you and all others who are saddened by this like me. I will speak to you personally and offer my humble apologies again,” tweeted the CM. 

    “Humari neta-pratipaksha keh rahi bahut se vidhayak humare sampark me hain. Are budhiya! tujhse kyun sampark karenge? Doobte jahaz se koi sampark karega? (Our Leader of Opposition says that several MLAs are in touch with us. Why would they contact you old woman? What would one want to do with a sinking ship?),” the BJP president had remarked. 

    Retorting to this, Hridayesh said that she was hurt with the kind of language used by the BJP state president and demanded that the ruling party’s national leadership takes cognizance of the incident.

    “Such language, then it is an insult to the motherhood which the women of our hills will never forgive. I don’t use such unparliamentary language so can’t stoop to his level. I urge the BJP  national leadership to take notice of this and seek explanation from him. Raising the slogan of Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao, these people should at least be mindful of their language,” said Hridayesh. 

    Following the incident Congress party workers launched protests across the state burning effigies and demanding removal of Bhagat.

  • Uttarakhand Minister Dhan Singh Rawat reveals mystery behind his name

    DEHRADUN: What is there in a name. So goes the old saying but if you ask Uttarakhand Minister Dhan Singh Rawat, there is an interesting story behind it.

    Sharing the story behind his name at a programme here, Rawat said he was named Dhan because his father had sent his mother a money order of Rs 50 on the day he was born.

    As the arrival of the money order coincided with his birth, he was named Dhan which means money, the minister said.

  • Agri Laws: Uttarakhand farmers start free bus service to Delhi protest site

    DEHRADUN: Farmers from Udham Singh Nagar district of Uttarakhand have started a free bus service to ferry farmers to Delhi where their counterparts have been protesting against the newly passed agri laws.

    The service which started on Saturday will be available twice a week on Monday and Thursday. 

    “The expenses will be borne by local Gurudwara committees for now and the plan is to expand the service to 3-4 days soon. We all stand with farmers of this country in solidarity and will do everything in our capacity to get these anti-farmer farm laws rolled back,” said Ajit Singh Randhawa, a farmer from Bajpur town of Udham Singh Nagar district. 

    More than 20,000 farmers from the district have joined others in Delhi at the protest site.

    The farmers from the district said that they plan to expand the service to all other parts of the district which include Rudrapur, Gadarpur, Khatima, Kiccha, Kashipur and Sitarganj tehsils. 

    A trip from Bajpur to Ghazipur border at the protest site costs between Rs 12000-15000 which will be bored by the local committee as well as many farmers and empathisers who have come forward to contribute.

    Bijendra Singh Dogra, another farmer from the district said, Our objective is to help our brothers to get to the protest site and family members of those who have been there for more than 15-20 days now. This way family members could see each other.”

    Balvinder Kaur (34) from Khatima says it has been 22 days since her husband joined the protests while she helms affairs at home with her two sons one 4-year-old and another 9-year old. 

    Last month, Uttarakhand police registered a case against over 1000 farmers after they marched towards Delhi breaking the barricading by Udham Singh Nagar district police. 

    The police had tried to stop the farmers by force responding to which the farmers defied the ban and went ahead. 

    The case has been registered under sections 147 (Rioting), 148 (Rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 332 (Voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty.), 353 (Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant.), 269 (Negligent act likely to spread infection of disease danger¬ous to life.) and under 51 b of Disaster Management Act 2005. 

    The district with 42% of agricultural produce leads among 13 districts of Uttarakhand state in terms of agriculture and is also known as the food bowl of the state. With a variety of crops like rice, wheat, maize, barley, sugarcane and others the district produces enough to fulfill the food requirements of the population of the state of over 1.15 crore. 

    The ‘terai’ district is known for the cultivation of the crops like rice, wheat, sugarcane, maize and soybean and cropping pattern is an ideal way to spot the trend of the various crops grown across various parts of the district. 

    Also known as “Chawa ki Nagari” (Ricebowl) of the state, farmers belonging to the district have registered their presence in ongoing protests in Delhi-NCR. 

  • Uttarakhand cabinet minister responds to ‘debate challenge’ of Manish Sisodia

    DEHRADUN: Uttarakhand cabinet minister Madan Kaushik on Sunday wrote an open letter to Delhi deputy CM Manish Sisodia responding to his debate challenge on works done by the Uttarakhand state government since March 2017. 

    Kaushik, in a four-page letter written in Hindi, alleged that Aam Admi Party and its leaders are just ‘Seller of Hopes’. Calling Sisodia, a ‘Tourist Politician’, he added that politics is a serious issue and not some ‘Theater Show’. 

    “Politics is a serious issue and not some theater show. I want you to remember that Uttarakhand is a land of serious movements. Every person in Uttarakhand is aware of development-centric politics and its serious facets, ” wrote Uttarakhand urban development minister in the letter. 

    Calling AAP leaders escapist he further added in the letter that AAP leaders keep hopping from Delhi to Punjab and Uttar Pradesh and now they are coming to Uttarakhand. 

    Launching a scathing attack, Kaushik wrote that Covid-19 got out of control due to the carelessness of the AAP government and only after Union home minister Amit Shah intervened and came to the rescue, the situation could be normalized. 

    He also wrote that promises of opening 400 libraries, regular power and water have all fallen apart along with much-hyped ‘Mohalla Clinics’ most of which have closed now.

    “I have no qualms in saying that you have a deeply ingrained lust for power. You cheated the people of Delhi for this. Now, you are trying to do the same in Uttarakhand but your attempts are bound to fail. The condition of lakhs of people living in the slums of Delhi is a well-known fact. You should learn something from Uttarakhand on this,” said Kaushik in the letter. 

    Sisodia who had challenged the minister for an open debate schedule Jan 4, 2021, in Dehradun is scheduled to reach Dehradun on Monday. 

    Sisodia on Saturday tweeted, “I would be in Dehradun on January 4 and in Delhi on January 6 to showcase the work done by AAP government.” 

    Earlier, Kaushik accepting the challenge had replied that he will go to Delhi to answer this. 

    Commenting on the issue, SS Kaler, state president of AAP said, “The BJP is lying and it always does. The party and its leaders are not ready to talk about what they have done because they have done nothing. Earlier they said they will list 100 good works and now they are not able to list even five.”

    “Today I had the corona test done and the report came back positive. My health is fine and I do not have any symptoms. Therefore, on the advice of doctors, I will be in home isolation. I request everyone, whoever has come in contact with me in the last few days, please isolate yourself and get yourself checked,” Rawat said in a tweet (roughly translated from Hindi).
