  • BJP will solve problems of Matuas after coming to power in Bengal: Uttar Pradesh Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya

    By PTI
HOWRAH: Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya on Sunday said that the BJP, after coming to power in West Bengal, will redress the grievances of the Matuas who are refugees holding sway in many seats in the poll-bound state.

Attacking the Trinamool Congress, Maurya alleged that activists of ruling party indulged in violence across the state.

“The BJP will solve the problems faced by the Matua community after coming to power,” he said at a public meeting at Gangarampur area of Uluberia in Howrah district.

Maurya and several state leaders of the BJP had lunch at the house of a Matua family in Gangarmpur where a large number of people belonging to the community live.

The Matuas, who have a sizeable population in the state, are being wooed by both the BJP and the TMC in the run-up to the assembly elections due in April-May next year.

On the outsider issue, the leader from UP told reporters that the BJP is an all-India party and its leaders can go to any other state in this democratic country.

The TMC does not have leaders across the country, Maurya said.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and leaders of her party, the TMC, often accuse the BJP of bringing in “outsiders” to the state ahead of the assembly polls due in April-May next year, while the saffron party has raised questions how people from other states coming here can be termed so.

Around 300 workers of various political parties joined the BJP on Sunday and Maurya handed over the party flag to them.

  • Woman village head in Uttar Pradesh found to be Pakistan national

    By PTI
ETAH: A 65-year-old woman from Pakistan, who had been living here for over three decades, was presiding as interim head of a village panchayat since last year until authorities found out that she did not have Indian citizenship.

The woman, Bano Begum, resigned as interim panchayat chief in December after an investigation into a complaint against her by a villager, District Panchayati Raj Officer (DPRO) Alok Priyadarshi said.

Officials said though her long-term visa was found to be valid, she had managed to get Ration and Aadhaar cards by providing false information.

She had been elected the interim head of Gudau village in Jalesar tehsil of Etah in January 2020 following the death of incumbent Shahnaz Begum.

“There were complaints that Bano Begum was living illegally. She had managed to get a ration card, voter ID and an Aadhaar card. She got elected as a member of the village panchayat (in 2015), and in January 2020, she was elected as the interim village head.

“The complaints were probed by SDM Jalesar SP Gupta and DPRO Alok Priyadarshi, and were found to be true,” District Magistrate of Etah Sukhlal Bharti said.

The DM said that Bano Begum had married Ashrat Ali almost 35 years ago but had not taken Indian citizenship.

She got her name registered illegally in the voter list in 1995, and then also got a ration card made in her name, officials said.

After getting an Aadhaar card, she got elected as a member of the village panchayat in 2015.

“On the complaints of Kuvaida Khan of the same village, it came to light that Bano Begum is living in the village under a long-term visa. She is not a citizen of India, and without being a citizen of India, one cannot contest any election,” Priyadarshi said.

He said the panchayat secretary who was appointed on the recommendation of the interim village pradhan has also been removed.

Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Jalesar SP Verma said that Bano Begum was the interim village head for six months.

“The documents used in making the ration card and voter ID card are being examined. Her name has been removed from the voter list of the village panchayat. Her name is not on the voter list for Assembly and Lok Sabha polls,” the SDM said.

Verma also said that so far no case has been registered, and officials of the police and district administration are investigating all possible angles in the matter.

  • Semi-final before Assembly polls: Uttar Pradesh panchayat elections likely in March

    Express News Service
LUCKNOW: Already delayed, the three-tier rural local body polls are likely to take place in Uttar Pradesh between March 15 and 30. However, the official announcement of dates is likely to come around February 15.

According to Panchayati Raj Minister Bhupendra Chaudhary, the work of delimitation of wards is under process while reorganization of gram sabhas has been completed. The four districts of Moradabad, Gonda, Sambhal and Gautam Budh Nagar are under full delimitation and the work for districts under partial delimitation is going on.

The tenure of 60,000 gram panchayats of the state had ended on December 25. The delay in conducting the polls in time has come amid the pandemic as the revision of the voters’ list and other modalities which are being conducted now could not be held as per the schedule. Talking to mediapersons, Panchayati Raj Minister stated that by January 14, the delimitation work would be completed, following which the work of reservation will be concluded. As of now, the reservation for gram panchayat seats was fixed at district headquarters. However, this time the process has been moved online. The reservation of seats for gram sabha, Block Development Council, Gram Pradhan and Zilla panchayat members in gram panchayats will be decided from Lucknow. The population of revenue villages will be assessed to implement reservation in panchayats.

The state government has appointed assistant development officers of districts as panchayat administrators of their districts, vesting in them the powers of panchayat committees and village panchayat heads following the expiry of the terms of village panchayats on December 25.

Meanwhile, the BJP will chalk out its strategy for the coming panchayat elections at a meeting on Sunday which is likely to be attended by national vice president and in-charge of state affairs in the party, Radha Mohan Singh.

However, the panchayat elections in UP are being considered the semi-final ahead of the 2022 Assembly elections in the state. With an eye on the Assembly elections, various political parties have stepped up their preparations for the panchayat polls.

The fight for the upcoming panchayat elections is set to become more intense by the day. While the ruling BJP is up against the SP, BSP and Congress, new rivals in the form of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Shiv Sena would make the rural local body elections even more interesting.

After the AAP of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena is all set to enter the fray in the Uttar Pradesh panchayat elections.

The Shiv Sena has sought applications from all the districts for selection of candidates. Earlier, the AAP announced it would contest the panchayat elections in Uttar Pradesh.
