The former UP CM also claimed that the condition of vaccination centres in the state is bad.

  • Senior OBC leader Ambika Chaudhary quits giving another jolt to BSP, may join Samajwadi Party

LUCKNOW: In a fresh jolt to the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), senior party leader and former Uttar Pradesh minister Ambika Chaudhary quit the party on Saturday. This came just a few hours after his son Anand Chaudhary switched-over to rival Samajwadi Party (SP) in native Ballia.

Though Chaudhary remained tight-lipped about his future plans, sources close to him said he is likely to return to the SP on Monday. After resigning from BSP, Chaudhary said, “I was feeling neglected in the BSP since 2019. Further, as my son has been nominated by the SP as its candidate in district panchayat chairperson poll, my loyalty to BSP could come under doubt.”

Among the founder members of SP, Chaudhary has long been considered very close to SP patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav and has held key portfolios in the state government in the past. In 2017 after being expelled from the Akhilesh-led party owing to proximity to Shivpal Yadav, Chaudhary, a powerful OBC leader, had joined the BSP.

The BSP had subsequently fielded him from Ballia’s Phephena seat, but he lost from the seat for the second time in row to BJP’s Upendra Tiwari. BSP MLA from Ballia’s Rasra seat Umashankar Singh said Chaudhary and his son have “back-stabbed” the BSP for which both of them will have to pay politically.

According to BSP sources, this latest development is bound to sharpen the acrimony between the SP and BSP, who fought the 2019 general elections together. With Ambika Chaudhary hailing from Yadav caste, the latest devopment is an indicator of Yadavs polarising in favour of SP, which has inherently been a Yadav dominated political outfit.

  • Yogi govt conducted mock drill of inquiry, says Priyanka Vadra on clean chit to Agra hospital

    By PTI
NEW DELHI: The BJP government in Uttar Pradesh conducted a “mock drill of an inquiry”, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said on Saturday after clean chit was given to an Agra hospital where 22 patients died after oxygen supply was allegedly cut during a drill.

A team of doctors investigating an alleged ‘mock drill’ by the private hospital has given a clean chit to the facility, saying it found no proof of an exercise during which oxygen supply was cut off and 22 patients reportedly died.

“Look at the irony: According to media reports, a hospital in Agra carried out a ‘mock drill’ by cutting off the oxygen supply of patients and the BJP government conducted a mock drill of inquiry by giving a clean chit,” Priyanka Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi.

“Government and hospital: The way is clear for both. The government has dashed the expectations of justice by ignoring the pleas of the family members of the  patients,” the Congress general secretary alleged.

The enquiry had been ordered by the Agra administration last week after a video clip surfaced on social media in which the owner of the city’s Shri Paras Hospital was purportedly heard saying that he conducted a “mock drill” in which the oxygen supply was cut off for COVID-19 patients for five minutes.

In the video, the hospitals’ owner, Dr Arinjay Jain, was purportedly also heard saying that after the oxygen supply was shut off, 22 patients started turning blue.

The inquiry report submitted by the panel of doctors to the district authorities said there was no proof of a ‘mock drill’ during which oxygen supply was cut off for five minutes due to which 22 patients allegedly died at the hospital.

The panel, however, mentioned that 16 patients died at the facility between April 26-27 due to co-morbidities and other issues.

  • After losing father to Covid, Class 6 girl sells shirts on footpath in Uttar Pradesh’s Shahjahanpur

    By PTI

SHAHJAHANPUR: Losing her father to Covid in April, a Class 6 girl selling ready-made shirts outside her house in busy Khirni Bagh area of Shahjahanpur district has caught the attention of both the police and the locals.

Mahi’s father, the sole bread earner of the family, used to supply ready-made shirts to shopkeepers.

He had installed four sewing machines and used to get the work done with the help of tailors from home.

In April this year, Pradip Kumar (45) suffered from high fever for three days and was tested Covid positive.

He was admitted to government medical college where he died during treatment on April 30.

With no help from anywhere for the family of four comprising her mother and ailing grandparents, the young girl set up a shop outside the house, placing the shirts lying in stock on a bench.

“We have been facing hardships ever since my father died. My grandfather is over 70 and has not been keeping well. Since there was no help available, we decided to sell the shirts which were lying in the house stitched,” Mahi told PTI.

Fondly recalling the good days when her father was alive, Mahi said that he used to bring ice cream and pastries for her daily.

But now things have changed completely, she added.

Taking notice of the girl sitting in a shop all alone, Sadar Bazar police station in-charge Ashok Pal rushed his men to enquire about the problems of the family.

“I came to know that her father had died of Covid infection sometime ago so the girl has to sell shirts on the footpath. Taking the immediate needs of the family into consideration, necessary things have been sent to them,” he said.

He added, “The family has also been assured of all help from my side.”

The matter has also come to the notice of District Magistrate Indra Vikram Singh.

“I have come to know of this matter. Information regarding the children who have been rendered orphans or lost the earning members of their family is being gathered. They will be given Rs 4,000 per month by the government till they reach the age of 18 years. This money will be given to their guardians,” he told PTI.

A team is at work and all the cases which come to the notice till June 25 will be disposed of.

Besides, school-going children will be given admission in government schools, the DM said.

A local journalist had appealed to the people through social media to help the girl after which some social organisations came forward to help the family by depositing their electricity bill and supporting through other such means.

Another girl from Shahjahanpur was in news recently after she helped the needy with oxygen cylinders using her scooty.

Breathing hope into the lives of people in need of oxygen amidst the Covid pandemic, 26-year-old Arshi has earned the nickname “cylinder waali bitiya”.

  • ‘Literary Naxals’: Gujarat Sahitya Academy chief slams poem on bodies floating in Ganga

    By PTI
AHMEDABAD: Gujarat Sahitya Academy chairman Vishnu Pandya has criticised a poem by Gujarati poetess Parul Khakhar on bodies floating in the Ganga river that criticised the Centre’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, saying that the work is being misused by “liberals, communists and literary Naxals” to spread “anarchy” in the country.

While several writers have extended their support to Khakhar and criticised Pandya for his stand, the chief of the Academy, a state government-controlled body, remained firm on his views, saying the poem targets Prime Minister Narendra Modi and “defames” Indian people, democracy and society.

Khakhar’s poem “Shab-Vahini Ganga” (corpse-carrying Ganga) criticises the Centre over its handling of the pandemic by making a reference about the bodies of COVID-19 victims floating in the river Ganga in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar at the peak of the second wave.

The poem became an instant hit and was translated into different languages and shared widely on social media platforms.

In an editorial in the June edition of the Academy’s official publication “Shabdashrushti”, Pandya has criticised the poem without specifically naming it.

The article was titled “No, this is not a poem, it is a misuse of a poem for anarchy”.

“Many have praised this poem. But this piece cannot be considered a poem at all. That was just pointless anger, a jugglery of words, defaming Indian people, democracy and society. How can you call this a poem?” Pandya wrote.

He further pointed out that the poem has been misused by people who are anti-Centre and are against its nationalist ideologies.

The poem has been used as a “shoulder to fire from” by those elements, he said.

“Communists and those so-called liberals want to create anarchy in the country. They are active in all fields and also jumped into literature with malicious intentions. These literary Naxals want to influence those unsuspecting people who would relate their personal grief with this poem,” Pandya stated.

He further said the Academy can never agree with what has been written in the poem, and said some elements had turned the work into a “weapon to tear apart the social fabric”.

While Khakhar was not available for comment, over 100 Gujarati writers, led by Manishi Jani of Gujarati Lekhak Mandal, came out in support of the poetess, who is also being targeted through social media.

In a statement, Jani said Gujarati writers “condemn the attempts to muzzle the voice of a writer and stand firmly in support of a Parul Khakhar”.

In his defence, Pandya said he was never against Khakhar and the Academy even supported her financially in the past for her literary works.

“Parul is a good poetess. But this poem does not fit in the literary standards. Her piece only reflects prejudice against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. One must refrain from using derogatory words like ‘naked king’ in a poem,” Pandya said.

“I can never agree with the idea of misusing a poem to create anarchy in the country. Criticism of the establishment must be there. Even we used to criticise governments. But there must be a balance in it,” he added.

  • FIR filed against journalists for sharing video of Muslim man be withdraw immediately: Editors Guild

    By PTI
NEW DELHI: The Editors Guild of India (EGI) on Friday demanded that the FIR lodged by the Uttar Pradesh Police against a news portal and some journalists for circulating a video clip of an elderly Muslim man on social media be withdrawn immediately.

It said “this wanton use of the law” to criminalise reporting and dissent to harass independent media was condemnable.

“The EGI condemns the filing of the FIRs by the Uttar Pradesh government against The Wire and several journalists, for their tweets on an assault on an elderly Muslim man in Ghaziabad on June 5,” the EGI said in a statement.

It demanded that the FIRs be withdrawn immediately.

The Uttar Pradesh Police on Tuesday had filed a first information report (FIR) against Twitter Inc, Twitter Communications India, news portal The Wire, scribes Mohammad Zubair and Rana Ayyub and senior journalist and author Saba Naqvi as well as Congress leaders Salman Nizami, Masqoor Usmani and Sama Mohammad for sharing on social media a video clip in which an elderly Muslim says he was thrashed by some people and forced to chant “Jai Sri Ram”.

“Several media organisations and journalists, besides the ones charged by the police, posted this video on their social media feeds,” the Guild said.

Subsequently, there was “an alternative version” offered by the Uttar Pradesh Police claiming that the assault was borne out of a dispute regarding a ‘talisman’ that the elderly man had sold to some people, which was also reported by these media organisations and journalists, it added.

“The Guild is deeply concerned by the UP police’s track record of filing FIRs against journalists to deter them from reporting serious incidents without fear of reprisals,” the EGI said.

The Guild said it is the duty of the journalists to report on the basis of the sources and in case the facts become contested, later on, to report the emerging versions and facets.

For the police to wade into such professional calls by the journalists and attribute criminality to their actions is destructive of freedom of speech, which is constitutionally protected and is an entrenched feature of the rule of law, the EGI said.

“Further it is quite evident that the police have been discriminatory in targeting those media organisations and the journalists — when thousands had tweeted the video — that has been critical of the government and its policies,” it added.

  • Uttar Pradesh: 12 cops injured as protest against road crash death turns violent, 43 arrested

    By PTI
UNNAO: Twelve police personnel were injured when people protesting over the death of two motorcycle riders in an accident pelted stones at them near a village here, officials said on Thursday.

Forty-three people have been arrested, and a case has been registered against 100 named and 250 unknown persons in connection with the violence that took place on Wednesday, the police said.

The road crash that led to the protest took place on Tuesday.

Devikheda village residents Rajesh (32) and Vipin (25) died as the motorcycle they were riding was hit by a car in the City Kotwali police station area, they said.

A day later, after the bodies were handed over to their families for last rites following a post-mortem examination, people of the village blocked the Unnao-Kanpur road near Akrampur to press for action against those responsible and compensation for the kin of the deceased, Superintendent of Police Anand Kulkarni said.

The protesters pelted stones at the sub-divisional magistrate and a police team sent there to pacify them, resulting in injuries to over 12 policemen, the SP said.

Meanwhile, the Lucknow Range inspector general tweeted that Kotwali Sadar Inspector in-charge Dinesh Mishra, police outpost in-charge of Magarwara, and two constables have been suspended for laxity and incompetence.

A clarification has been sought from the CO City, and the investigation of entire case has been given to the Rae Bareli additional superintendent of police, the IG said.

According to local people, the police team was outnumbered and ill-equipped to handle the mob.

The situation came under control after additional forces arrived at the spot.

  • BSP chief Mayawati launches fresh attack on Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav

    By PTI
LUCKNOW: BSP chief Mayawati on Thursday took a swipe at Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Akhilesh Yadav, saying he was getting expelled and “ineffective” leaders from other parties to join his party just to remain in the news. This is the second consecutive day that Mayawati has targeted Yadav after five MLAs suspended by the BSP last year met the SP chief on Tuesday, triggering speculation that they may join his party.

    — Mayawati (@Mayawati) June 17, 2021

In a tweet in Hindi, Mayawati said, “The condition of SP has become so bad that in order to remain in the media every day, even former MLAs and small workers of other parties, who have been expelled or have become ineffective in their areas, are being made to join the party by the SP chief himself many times.”

She also charged that the SP chief has no longer has faith in his own local leaders. Mayawati asserted that her party is getting only the right leaders to join the BSP. “The local level leaders of the BSP have been continuously making only the right people of other parties, including the SP, join after investigation, this is well known,” she said.

On Wednesday, Mayawati had said that the “Samajwadi Party, which is an expert in narrow politics of despicable manipulations, malice and casteism, is publicising through the media that some BSP MLAs are breaking away to join the SP. This is an intense illusion”.

According to the statement issued by the SP on Wednesday Amar Pal Sharma, former BSP MLA from Sahibabad, had joined Yadav’s party along with his supporters. The statement had also stated that leaders and workers of many other parties had taken membership of the party.
