    By PTI

MUZAFFARNAGAR: A station house officer here has been shunted out after a woman killed herself alleging police inaction on her complaint against her husband for circulating her obscene video on social media, officials said Tuesday.

Bhopa police station SHO Deepak Chaturvedi has been sent to police line and Subhash Babu appointed in his place, they said.

The 25-year-old woman, who was divorced three months ago through triple talaq, died by suicide on August 28 after her husband allegedly circulated an obscene video of her on social media, police had said on Sunday.

Before she took the extreme step, she had alleged that the police were not taking any action against her husband on her compliant.

Deepak Chaturvedi had said Sunday, when he was still the SHO, the couple got married four years ago and had an 18-month-old son.

Police had also said the accused divorced his wife by pronouncing triple talaq three months ago following which she moved in with her parents in Kishanpur village along with the child, they said.

In a police complaint lodged on August 18, the woman accused her husband of giving instant triple talaq and forcibly taking away their son from her.

While the police were investigating the matter, an obscene video of the woman was circulated on social media allegedly by her husband, they said, adding the woman ended her life by consuming poison.

  • Two Congress leaders from Uttar Pradesh resign from party, say loyal members being neglected

    By PTI

BALLIA: Two senior All India Congress Committee (AICC) members from Uttar Pradesh have resigned from the party’s primary membership, alleging that old and loyal Congress leaders are being neglected.

Shailendra Singh and Rajesh Singh sent their resignation letters to the party’s Uttar Pradesh unit president Ajay Kumar Lallu on Sunday.

The two leaders said they had informed Congress president Sonia Gandhi as well as Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi about their decision.

Targeting the UPCC president, Shailendra Singh told journalists on Monday that loyal and old time Congresspersons have been neglected since Lallu took over and this is why dedicated leaders are quitting the party.

He said he had informed AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi about the situation in the party many times, but she did not take any step.

In such a situation, he was left with no option but to resign from the Congress, he added.

Shailendra Singh said in his resignation letter that he has been active in public service and Congress organization for the last 15 years.

He is presently joint in-charge of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee and a nominated member of the AICC.

Rajesh Singh said he had been an active member of the Congress since his student days and had held various positions in the NSUI, Youth Congress and Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee for the last 25 years.

He said in his letter that he was also an elected a member of the AICC but was resigning because of the present environment of the Congress and the neglect of old Congress members.

Terming the allegations of the two leaders baseless, Congress state secretary and Allahabad in-charge Raghavendra Pratap Singh said work was being done to strengthen the Congress, right down to the ‘nyay panchayat’ and booth level, under the leadership of Priyanka Gandhi and Lallu.

District president of the party, Om Prakash Pandey, said both were having some dispute with the state leadership.

  • Priyanka rises in prominence as reformer, troubleshooter for Congress

    Express News Service

NEW DELHI: Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has emerged as a crisis manager for the party in difficult times. Her troubleshooting skills were on display while handling the Chhattisgarh political turmoil after the decisive role played by her in tackling similar situations in Rajasthan and Punjab state units.

Priyanka, who is in charge of Uttar Pradesh, is taking a keen interest in organisational matters and is consulted in important decisions related to revamp the party, said party sources. While the controversy in Punjab Congress fails to end, a senior party leader said she played a major role in organisational revamp in the state.

She was the one who insisted on cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu’s elevation as Punjab Congress chief despite disapproval by Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh and reservations by former party chief Rahul Gandhi.

“Priyanka was the one who ensured Sidhu meets Rahul, a day after any meeting was denied by her brother. During the marathon meeting, she kept shuffling from Rahul’s house to party chief Sonia Gandhi’s residence to keep her in the loop. Finally, the decision went in favour of Sidhu by sidelining Amarinder Singh, who has good relations with Sonia ji,” said another party leader.

On similar lines in Chhattisgarh, during the three-hour-long meeting between Rahul and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, she was present all through and updated Sonia also on the matter.

Baghel was called to Delhi again Friday to meet Rahul as Priyanka was not present during the meeting on Tuesday. She was in the US on a personal visit and returned a day later. Priyanka’s decision to let Baghel continue for time being prevailed despite Rahul’s view to fulfill the commitment made to state health minister T S Singh Deo.

She worked behind the curtains to placate the situation in Rajasthan last year following a rebellion by party leader Sachin Pilot, who was constantly in touch with her, over power-sharing issues with Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot. While trouble continues in Rajasthan over delay in addressing Pilot’s concerns, she continues to be in touch with the Tonk MLA and has assured him quick redressal of the problem.

  • Ex-IPS Amitabh Thakur held for abetment to suicide of rape survivor

    Express News Service

LUCKNOW: IPS officer Amitabh Thakur, compulsorily retired early this year, was arrested by the Lucknow Police on Friday in connection with the self-immolation case outside the Supreme Court by a rape survivor and her companion a fortnight ago.

Before immolating themselves, the two had named jailed BSP MP Atul Rai and Thakur among others for harassing them and conspiring to defame them on social media.

While taking the extreme step, the victim and her companion had live-streamed a video message on social media accusing BSP MP Atul Rai, then Varanasi SSP Amit Pathak, former IG Amitabh Thakur, and other police and judicial officers of harassing them and forcing them to commit suicide. The video was considered as the dying declaration by the investigation team.

After the incident, the state government had constituted a two-member special investigating team (SIT) headed by UP Police Recruitment & Promotion Board (UPPRPB) RK Vishwakarma and Additional Director General (ADG) Women Power Line 1090 (WPL) Neera Rawat to probe into the allegations levelled by the rape survivor against the cops. Both the rape survivor and her companion succumbed to burn injuries at a Delhi hospital recently.

Following the investigation, the Lucknow police had lodged a case of abetment to suicide against the jailed MP Atul Rai and former IG Amitabh Thakur on Friday on the instructions of the Uttar Pradesh Director General of police, Mukul Goel. The DGP was ordered to lodge the FIR against Thakur on the basis of the probe report submitted to him by the two-member SIT.

After registering the FIR at Hazaratganj police station, Thakur was arrested in the state capital. Earlier in the day, however, Amitabh Thakur announced that he had floated his own political outfit ‘Adhikar Sena’.

In March this year, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) had directed Thakur to take an exit from Indian Police Services (IPS) through Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS) finding him unsuitable for the job.

The FIR was lodged by senior sub-inspector Daya Shankar Dwivedi posted at Hazratganj police station. Dwivedi stated in the FIR that on the basis of the report of the two-member SIT, it surfaced that the victim woman had lodged a case of rape and dishonesty against the jailed MP Atul Rai in 2019. Police filed a charge sheet in the court. Thereafter, the accused got seven FIRs lodged against the victim woman.

The FIR further claimed that the rape survivor had given a letter dated November 10, 2020, to SSP Varanasi accusing Amitabh Thakur of having taken money from BSP MP Atul Rai to frame false evidence in the court and also trying to tarnish her image forcing her to commit self-immolation.

The rape survivor had also stated in the same letter that Amitabh Thakur was circulating misleading facts and defiling her image by circulating audios of her witnesses being related to criminals, said the FIR.

The FIR also states that further on August 16, 2021, the victim woman and a man who was a witness of the case, immolated themselves outside the gate of the Supreme Court and later succumbed to their injuries.

  • Mayawati launches attack on Congress for defaming BSP in its booklet

    Express News Service

LUCKNOW: While launching a broadside on Congress party for ‘defaming’ her party in a booklet released recently, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati claimed that she was fully fit to lead the party but whenever a successor would be appointed, he/she would be a Dalit.

The BSP chief was interacting with the media persons here on Friday.

Calling its condition precarious, Mayawati did not mince words in attacking the Congress party and claimed that it calls the paid crowd to its rallies. “Basically, the daily wagers are paid for the day and taken for the rally,” said Mayawati. She claimed that Congress was devoid of cadre and facing the paucity of candidates to contest elections in the states like Uttar Pradesh.

“They hardly get candidates to contest elections in UP. Be it Zila panchayat, block chairman or even assembly polls, Congress pays money to people to contest election on its ticket,” claimed Mayawati while addressing media persons.

With her party being busy preparing for the upcoming Assembly elections in UP and Uttarakhand early next year, Mayawati said that BSP was the only party that did not depend on donations from corporate houses and capitalists. “On the other, Congress takes financial assistance from corporate houses and in lieu of which they oblige the capitalists with Rajya Sabha seats,” added the BSP chief.

Mayawati claimed that her party gives tickets to those who could fight the elections on their own and were capable of increasing the clout of the party.

Reacting to the booklet issued by Congress, the BSP supremo advised it to focus on its own shortcoming instead of pointing out the weaknesses of other parties.

“Congress should put it own house in order rather than commenting on other parties,” said Mayawati. She added that the public would not believe Congress’s gimmick about other parties. “In Punjab, BSP and Akali Dal together preparing to ensure Congress ouster,” said the BSP chief.

When asked about her successor, Mayawati said that she was fully fit and that the party was not in the need of her successor. “In the future, if my heath will not support me, I will appoint my successor from among Dalits. However, at present, I am capable of taking care of my party,” averred the BSP chief.
