  • Woman advocate in Uttar Pradesh tries self-immolation over police ‘inaction’ on rape complaint

    MATHURA: Upset with alleged police inaction over the complaint of her rape by a law professor and three others, a woman lawyer on Friday attempted self-immolation in front of a police station but was stopped before she lit the matchstick.

    “She doused herself with some inflammable liquid but her efforts were foiled by two policemen,” Mathura City Superintendent of Police Martand Prakash Singh said.

    Denying police inaction, Singh said a detailed probe is on into the matter and two more police teams have been formed to nab the accused.

    On the woman’s complaint, an FIR was lodged earlier at the Highway police station in Mathura on May 7 against a law professor of a local college and his three accomplices for allegedly sexually assaulting her a day earlier, police said.

    But, alleging that she was neither sent for any medical examination nor any action was taken against the alleged culprits, she submitted an application to the SSP on May 13, and threatened to burn herself to death in front of the police station, they said.

    Denying police inaction in the case, officials said her statement under section 161 of the CrPC was taken on May 7 and under section 164 of the CrPc while her medical examination too conducted on May 15 as her COVID-19 test report was received late, police said.

  • Man sentenced to death in Uttar Pradesh for raping 10-year-old girl

    FIROZABAD: A special POCSO court here on Thursday sentenced a man to death for raping a 10-year-old girl in December 2020, disposing of the case in a ‘record’ three and a half months.

    Additional Sessions Judge Mridul Dubey, heading the special court set up under the provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, sentenced the accused, Neeraj, a resident of a village under Jasrana police station, to death after convicting him of the offence of rape.

    Additional Government Counsel Ajumed Singh Chauhan said the offence was committed on December 14, 2020, when Neeraj had lured the girl to a desolate place in his village and raped her.

    After hearing both the prosecution and defence counsel, the POSCO court gave its verdict in “record time”, the ADGC added.

  • Two held for gang rape of minor in Uttar Pradesh’s Kaushambi

    KAUSHAMBI: Two men were arrested here on Sunday in connection with the alleged gang-rape of a girl, police said.

    Additional Superintendent of Police Samar Bahadur Singh said the incident took place on March 25, when the girl, aged around 15, had gone to collect fodder for animals.

    The girl lodged a police complaint on Saturday, the additional SP said, adding she was sent for medical examination.

    The accused were arrested on Sunday and sent to jail, Singh said.

  • Man allegedly raped Dalit woman for two years in UP

    BANDA (UP): A 22-year-old Dalit woman was allegedly raped for two years by a man on the false promise of marriage here, police said on Friday.

    The woman, who hailed from Mahoba district, lodged a complaint on Thursday evening at City Kotwali police station following which an FIR was registered against the accused.

    She alleged that Utkarsh Sachan (25), who lived in her neighbourhood, had been raping her since the past two years on the promise of marriage, Station House Officer Jaishyam Shukla said.

    He also threatened to kill her when she finally asked him to marry her, Shukla said.

    The accused, who hailed from Hamirpur, had shifted to Kanpur about a month ago after he got a job there.

    The woman was sent for medical examination and teams were sent to Hamirpur and Kanpur to nab the accused, the SHO said.

  • Man arrested for attempt to rape teenage girl in Uttar Pradesh

    BANDA: A man has been arrested for allegedly trying to rape a 14-year-old girl in Banda district in Uttar Pradesh, police said on Tuesday.

    The 22-year-old man dragged the girl and tried to rape her on Monday when she was grazing goat in a forest area, Dehat police station SHO Pradeep Kumar Yadav said.

    He said that the accused has been arrested and booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and other relevant sections of IPC.

    The girl has been sent for medical examination.

  • 15-year-old girl found dead in Uttar Pradesh’s Chitrakoot, rape suspected

    CHITRAKOOT: A 15-year-old girl was hacked to death with an axe allegedly after being raped and her four-year-old nephew attacked in a village here, following which one person was arrested, police said on Friday.

    The incident took place on Thursday when the girl was returning home after giving food to her father in the field, they said.

    “The body of the girl was found in a village on Thursday. She was hacked to death with an axe,” Superintendent of Police Ankit Mittal said.

    Her nephew was also attacked.

    He was rushed to the hospital where he died during treatment, he said.

    Circle Officer Subodh Gautam said the girl was attacked when she was returning home after giving food to her father in the field.

    A 30-year-old man from the girl’s village has been arrested in connection with the incident, he said.

    “Accused Chilua has been arrested by the police. The motive behind the crime is being probed,” the officer said.

    Gautam said the teenager’s family has alleged that she was raped before being murdered.

    It will be confirmed after the post-mortem examination.

    “The post-mortem report is awaited,” he said.

    Meanwhile, an official spokesperson in Lucknow said Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has taken note of the incident and announced a financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh to the victim’s family.

  • Three arrested for rape, murder of 18-year-old Dalit woman in Uttar Pradesh’s Mahoba

    MAHOBA: Three people were arrested in Mahoba district of Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday for allegedly raping and killing a Dalit woman, whose body was found hanging from a tree here, police said.

    The 18-year-old victim, who was in Class 12, left home to buy vegetables on Saturday afternoon but did not return.

    Later, her family members found her body hanging from a tree in the Belatal area, Circle Officer Rampravesh Rai had said.

    An FIR was registered against the trio, Rohit, Bhupendra and Tarun, on charges of rape and under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, SHO, Kulpahad police station, Ravindra Tiwari had said.

    Further investigation is underway, he added.

    The woman’s aunt told the police on Sunday that she was being harassed by a man in their locality, who was making phone calls to her for the last one month.

    She alleged that the victim’s body was hanged from the tree after she was killed, the officer had said earlier.

  • Four arrested for raping, holding minor captive in Lucknow

    LUCKNOW: A 15 year-old-girl was allegedly held captive for 13 months, raped and forced into prostitution in the state capital, police said.

    Four people including a Nepalese national, who is the main accused and works as a school guard, were arrested on Thursday by the Mahanagar police after the girl escaped from captivity and was found to be five months pregnant.

    The main accused, Upreta Kumar, used to take her to different people on the pretext of getting her a job as a house helper and had been raping her for the past 13 months, police said.

    He also used to hand her over to other people for money, police said, adding that she used to be held captive in a room for 15 days, raped and many times was not given anything to eat.

    The girl managed to escape recently and reached home.

    She was found to be five months pregnant when her mother took her to a doctor after she fell ill, police said, adding that a complaint in this regard was lodged with the Mahanagar police on Wednesday.

    Besides the school guard, the others arrested have been identified as Jitu Kashyap, Varun Tiwari and Ajay Kumar, police said, adding a case under the POCSO Act has been lodged against all of them.

    Investigations are on to identify others involved in the crime, police added.
