  • Inter-state arms smuggling racket busted, 2 arrested in Utter Pradesh

    LUCKNOW: The Anti-Terror Squad of Uttar Pradesh Police has busted an inter-state arms smuggling racket and arrested two persons from Azamgarh, an official statement said on Friday.

    The arrests were made in a joint operation of the UP ATS and Azamgarh police.

    The UP ATS said they received information about the involvement of Aftab Alam and Mainuddin Sheikh, both residents of Azamgarh, in the manufacturing of illegal arms, the statement said.

    The duo acquired ammunition for the arms from gun shops, it said, adding the duo then sold and illegally smuggled them.

    Alam had gone to jail twice and was involved in the illegal manufacturing and smuggling of arms.

    These arms and ammunition were purchased by Sheikh, who used to further smuggle them in collusion with a gun house in Azamgarh, it said.

    Sheikh had also built a factory in his agriculture field and when the factory got swept away in the rains, he operated the factory from his house, the statement said.

    A huge cache of arms and ammunition along with the equipment used in manufacturing them and a mobile phone have been recovered, the ATS said. A case has been registered against them at Bilariyaganj police station in Azamgarh, it said.

    Sheikh’s connections in Nepal, Pakistan and Dubai also emerged during the probe, the ATS said.

  • UP Police shootout during Uttarakhand raid leaves BJP leader’s wife dead

    UDHAM SINGH NAGAR: A raid by the Uttar Pradesh Police at the residence of a local BJP leader in Uttarakhand’s Udham Singh Nagar district went tragically wrong after his wife was shot dead, allegedly by a police bullet, leading to villagers confining and thrashing the police team.

    The incident was reported on Wednesday from Bharatpur village in Kashipur area of Udham Singh Nagar.

    According to the information, a team of Uttar Pradesh Police in plain clothes arrived here for a raid at the residence of Gurtaj Bhullar, a BJP’s local area Block President, in Bharatpur village under the Kunda police station area on Wednesday evening.

    The raid was to nab a wanted dumper driver from Thakurdwara in Uttar Pradesh, who was allegedly hiding at Bhullar’s house.

    The family of Bhullar opposed the police action and allegedly clashed with them.

    Their argument went on for half an hour, before it turned violent and saw firing from both the sides.

    It was alleged that a bullet shot by the Uttar Pradesh Police personnel hit Bhullar’s wife Gurpreet Kaur, who died on the spot.

    A large number of villagers then assembled at the spot, restrained the Uttar Pradesh Police personnel hostage, and badly thrashed them, leaving them seriously injured.

    Following this, a team of the Uttarakhand Police from the local police station reached the spot along with extra force to control the situation.

    Udham Singh Nagar SSP Manjunath T.C. said that in view of the deteriorating situation, forces from other districts have been called.

    There has been firing from both the sides, in which the woman has died and three constables of the Uttar Pradesh Police have also been injured, the SSP added.

  • Kanpur violence: 3 FIRs registered, 500 booked as cops stay alert

    KANPUR: The Uttar Pradesh Police Saturday booked 500 people for rioting and violence in Kanpur that left 40 injured, official said, as an uneasy calm prevailed in the affected areas this morning.

    Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and order) Anand Prakash Tiwari said 18 people have been arrested so far over the Friday incident, and some others are detained for questioning.

    “The area is peaceful and we are maintaining a round-the-clock vigil,” he said, adding some suspects were detained overnight by different police teams.

    Three FIRs over rioting and violence have been lodged against over 500 people, Tiwari said.

    The violence broke out in Pared, Nai Sadak and Yateemkhana areas of the city after Friday namaz when some people tried to force shopkeepers to down shutters over allegedly insulting remarks made by BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma during a TV debate recently, a senior police official had said Friday.

    At least 40 people including 20 police personnel were injured during the clashes, police said on Saturday.

    Those who allegedly forced traders to shut shops clashed with police personnel who used batons to disperse the mob.

    Additional Director General (Law and Order) Prashant Kumar has warned that those involved will be booked under the stringent Gangsters Act and their properties seized or demolished.

  • Kasganj custodial death: National Commission for Minorities seeks report from Chief Secretary, DGP

    NEW DELHI: The National Commission for Minorities has taken suo motu cognizance of the death of a man in police custody in Uttar Pradesh’s Kasganj district and sought a report within 15 days from the Director General of Police and the Chief Secretary on the action taken.

    The Commission has also taken suo motu cognizance of the reported attack on a mosque, houses and shops of minority community members in Tripura and sought a report on it from the chief secretary of the state.

    NCM chief Iqbal Singh Lalpura shared with reporters at a press interaction here the action taken by the Commission over the two incidents. In the custodial death case, Lalpura said that the NCM has written to the DGP and the chief secretary of Uttar Pradesh and sought a report on the action taken.

    The man called for questioning at Kasganj police station in a kidnapping case died in custody on Tuesday, with his family members alleging that he was killed by police personnel. However, the police claimed that Altaf (22) had strangulated himself using a string from his jacket hood in the washroom of the police lock-up.

    Five policemen have been suspended for negligence following the incident. The NCM has also take cognizance of a media report regarding attacks on a mosque, houses and shops of members of the minority community in Tripura.

    The letter sent on November 8 has sought details of the incident, the action taken and how many have been arrested or booked in connection with the incident by November 14 from the Tripura chief secretary.

  • Uttar Pradesh cops save man hanging from noose after call from alert daughter

    NOIDA: A 45-year-old man hanging from a noose inside his house was saved by policemen in Uttar Pradesh’s Kaushambi district who promptly reached the location following a call from his daughter, officials said on Tuesday.

    Police were alerted by the Class 11 girl who called up the emergency number 112 on the instructions of her elder brother who was away from home but sensed the criticalness of the situation.

    “The police response vehicle (PRV) got the call at 2.10 pm on Monday and it reached the house, which lies on the outskirts of a village, covering a distance of three kilometres in just around three minutes,” an official with the 112 emergency number said.

    Sub-Inspector Shivdas was the commander of PRV-1195 and Home Guard Prem Narayan its driver, the officials said.

    The PRV officials said that after they reached the house, they looked into the room through a window and saw the man hanging from the noose.

    “Some other people had gathered there and all thought the man was dead. I noticed a slight movement and immediately started breaking the door which was bolted from inside. With the help from two more people, we broke the door and brought the man down by releasing him from the noose,” Prem Narayan told PTI.

    Water was sprinkled on his face and he regained consciousness after which he was rushed to a local hospital from where he returned home later in the day, the officials said.

    “He is doing fine now,” the man’s son, who requested that the family not be identified, told PTI over phone on Tuesday.

    The 24-year-old son said his father attempted suicide because he was “intoxicated” and upset with his mother, who had gone to the farms after a tiff in the afternoon.

    “I was not in the village when my younger sister called me to inform me of what had happened. I sensed the criticality and told her to immediately call the police on 100 (112 now) instead of wasting time looking for help in the village, she did that and the police also reached quickly,” he added.

    The family, meanwhile, requested people to not share videos or pictures of the episode on social media.

  • Police team attacked by villagers in Uttar Pradesh

    HARDOI: A group of people on Monday attacked a police team in a village here that went to rescue a woman, who was allegedly kidnapped about a month ago, officials said.

    The villagers also damaged a vehicle and thrashed its driver, Mukesh Singh.

    They forcibly took away the woman from police custody, officials said, adding a case has been lodged against 12 persons under IPC sections including, attempt to murder, rioting, obstructing government work, Station House Officer (SHO), Kanth, Rajendra Bahadur Singh said.

    Efforts are on to trace and arrest the accused persons, he said.

    About a month ago, a case with regards to the kidnapping of a 25-year-old woman was registered at Harpalpur police station here.

    After receiving information about the woman’s location, a police team reached Kurriya Kala village and rescued the woman from the house of a man identified as Mohit, Inspector Kiran Pal Singh said.

    When the police were about to leave with the woman, the villagers attacked them with sticks, the officer said, adding the officials somehow managed to save themselves and left the scene.

  • Amid clamour to arrest son in Lakhimpur violence case, MoS Ajay Mishra says Ashish ‘innocent’

    LUCKNOW: Union minister Ajay Mishra, whose son faces a murder case in connection with the October 3 violence in Lakhimpur Kheri, Friday said his son was “innocent” and will appear before the Uttar Pradesh police Saturday to record his statement.

    He said Ashish missed the police summons for Friday 10 am as he was “not well”.

    “We have full faith in law. My son is innocent. He got a notice on Thursday but he said he was not well. He will appear before the police tomorrow and give his statement and evidence as he is innocent,” the Union minister of state for home told reporters at Chowdhury Charan Singh airport here.

    On Opposition relentless attack on him and demand for his resignation, the minister said, “Vipaksh to kuch bhi mangta hai (Opposition can demand anything).”

    The minister’s son is named in the FIR in the Lakhimpur violence that took place on October 3 in which eight persons including four farmers and a journalist were killed.

    Ashish was asked by the police to appear before it at 10 am Friday, bu he skipped the summons.

  • Four criminals arrested after encounter with cops in Uttar Pradesh

    SIDDHARTHNAGAR (UTTAR PRADESH): Four criminals were arrested Monday morning following a brief exchange of gunfire with cops here, officials said. One of the criminals, Moharram, sustained a gunshot wound to the leg, while a sub-inspector, Chandan Kumar, was hit in the hand in the encounter, the police said.

    More than a dozen cases are lodged against the criminals, and police were searching for them, they said.

  • UP man who killed wife, two kids and faked own murder arrested after three years

    NOIDA: The Uttar Pradesh Police has arrested a man, who was believed to be dead, for allegedly killing his wife and two children three years ago and then burying their bodies in the basement of his house in Greater Noida, officials said on Thursday.

    The skeletal remains were exhumed from the site late Wednesday night by teams of the Greater Noida police and the Kasganj police, and have been sent for forensic examination, they said.

    Thirty-four-year-old Rakesh is also accused of killing a friend of his in Kasganj, two months after killing his family members in Greater Noida, the officials said.

    Rakesh placed his identity cards on his friend’s body to lead investigators into believing that he had been killed, they said.

    In February 2018, a man lodged a “missing” persons complaint at the Bisrakh police station in Greater Noida.

    He claimed that his 27-year-old daughter and her two grandchildren, aged three and one, had been kidnapped by his son-in-law Rakesh, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP), Central Noida, Ankur Aggarwal said.

    On the basis of the complaint, a case was registered and investigation initiated, the official said.

    “Two months later, an FIR was registered at the Dholna police station in Kasganj district about the murder of Rakesh,” Aggarwal said.

    In the course of investigation of the murder case, the Kasganj police on Wednesday reached Bisrakh and informed their counterparts that Rakesh was alive and had been apprehended, he said.

    “The Kasganj police also informed us that Rakesh, who was accused of kidnapping his wife and two children, had told them that he had killed his family members and buried their bodies at their house in Bisrakh in Greater Noida,” Aggarwal said.

    The basement of Rakesh’s house in Bisrakh was searched and some skeletal remains were exhumed on Wednesday in the presence of Greater Noida and Kasganj police teams, he said.

    “These remains have been sent to forensic experts so that identities can be ascertained and on the basis of that modifications will be made in the FIR that was lodged here in 2018,” ADCP said.

    Rakesh has been arrested by the Kasganj police, the officials said, adding that further investigation and legal proceedings in the case are being carried out.
