  • UP Legislative Council polls: 10 NDA, 3 SP candidates elected unopposed

    Lucknow, Thirteen candidates, including 10 of the NDA and three of Samajwadi Party, were elected unopposed in the biennial elections to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council here on Thursday. Thursday was the last date for withdrawal of nomination papers.

    The elected candidates were also presented certificates, special secretary to the UP Vidhan Sabha B B Dubey told PTI.

    The seven candidates of the BJP who have been elected are former ministers Mahendra Singh and Ashok Katariya, Vijay Bahadur Pathak (state BJP vice-president), Santosh Singh, Mohit Beniwal, Ram Tirath Singhal (former mayor of Jhansi) and Dharmendra Singh. Apart from these, three candidates of the NDA partners — Ashish Patel of Apna Dal (S), Yogesh Chaudhary of Rashtriya Lok Dal and Vichhelal of the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) — were also declared elected.

    SP candidates who made it to the UP Legislative Council included senior party leader Balram Yadav, former MLA Shah Alam alias Guddu Jamali and Kiranpal Kashyap.

    The term of 13 members of the council is coming to an end in May this year. The elected candidates had filed their nomination papers on March 11, the last date for filing of nominations.

    According to BJP insiders, there has been an attempt to strike a caste and regional balance through the legislative council elections, especially in view of the coming Lok Sabha polls.

  • Tariq Mansoor resigns as AMU Vice-Chancellor after being nominated UP MLC

    ALIGARH: Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Vice-Chancellor Tariq Mansoor resigned from the post on Tuesday, a day after he was nominated as a member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council.

    Pro Vice-Chancellor Mohammad Gulrez will officiate as the Vice-Chancellor till Mansoor’s successor is appointed, according to a notification issued by AMU Registrar Mohammad Imran.

    In an open letter to university students and staff on Monday, Mansoor said, “As I demit office, this is the last time I address you as the Vice-Chancellor. I had the opportunity of serving the institution for six years during good and challenging times.”

    He thanked the AMU community for standing by him during this time, especially in facing the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

    Mansoor’s resignation came weeks before his tenure was to end.

    He assumed office as the Vice-Chancellor of AMU on May 17, 2017, for a period of five years.

    His term was to end in May 2022, but amid exceptional circumstances prevailing in the wake of the pandemic, the Centre extended his tenure by one year.

    According to a notification issued by Chandrashekhar, Special Secretary, Government of Uttar Pradesh late on Monday night, Mansoor is among six people nominated by the Governor as MLCs against eight vacancies.

  • Jitin Prasada, Sanjay Nishad among four new members take oath in UP Legislative Council

    LUCKNOW: Four new members of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council, including state minister Jitin Prasada, were administered oath at a function here on Wednesday.

    Besides Prasada, Sanjay Nishad, who heads Nishad (Nirbal Indian Shosit Hamara Aam Dal) Party; Chaudhary Virendra Singh Gujjar and Gopal Anjan Bhurji were administered oath by Chairman of the Legislative Council, Manvendra Singh in Tandon hall of the Assembly.

    The four members were nominated to the upper house of the legislature last month.

    UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Deputy CMs Keshav Prasad Maurya and Dinesh Sharma were among those who were present on the occasion.

    Prasada, who hails from Shahjahanpur, had recently crossed over to the BJP from Congress and was also made a minister in the Yogi Adityanath government.

    Sanjay Nishad was in the news for his demand that the BJP should project him as a deputy chief ministerial face in the upcoming assembly elections.

    He had claimed that Nishads (fishermen) constitute about 18 per cent of the electorate and play a deciding role in 160 assembly seats.

    The Nishad Party had contested the 2017 assembly elections in alliance with the Peace Party led by Dr Mohamed Ayub and contested 72 seats.

    Its candidate Vijay Mishra had won from Gyanpur seat in Bhadohi district.

    Union minister and BJP in-charge for UP Dharmendra Pradhan had recently announced a tie-up with the Nishad Party for the 2022 election.

    In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the party entered into an alliance with the BJP and Sanjay Nishad’s son Praveen Nishad was nominated from Sant Kabir Nagar from where he won the elections.

  • UP Legislative Council polls: BJP candidates to file papers on Monday

    LUCKNOW: All BJP candidates for the biennial polls to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council will file their nomination papers on Monday in the presence of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the party said in a statement on Sunday.

    The party candidates include state BJP chief Swatantra Dev Singh and Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma.

    Monday is the last day for the filing of nominations for 12 legislative council seats, which will fall vacant on January 30.

    The scrutiny of papers will be held on January 19 and names can be withdrawn till January 21.

    The polling is scheduled to take place on January 28 and the counting will be done an hour after the completion of the polls.

    On Friday, former IAS officer AK Sharma was named a BJP candidate, a day after he joined the party, fuelling speculations that he may get a ministerial post soon.

    Sharma in a tweet thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, national BJP president J P Nadda and UP CM Yogi Adityanath for it.

    Sharma, who has long been one of the trusted bureaucrats of Prime Minister Narendra Modi since his tenure as the Gujarat chief minister, joined the BJP on Thursday, days after he opted for voluntary retirement from service.

    Besides Sharma, the BJP named Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma, its state unit president Swatantra Dev Singh and Lakshman Prasad Acharya as candidates for the polls.

    The other BJP candidates are Kunwar Manvendra Singh, Govind Narayan Shukla, Salil Bishnoi, Ashwani Tyagi, Dharamveer Prajapati and Surendra Chaudhary.

    The BJP has already asserted that it will win 10 out of 12 seats.

    In the 403-member UP Legislative Assembly, the BJP has 310 MLAs, SP 49, BSP 18, Apna Dal (Sonelal) has 9, Congress 7 and the SBSP 4.

    There are three Independent MLAs while the RLD and the Nishad Party have one MLA each.

    UP BJP general secretary JPS Rathore said his party can easily win 10 of the 12 seats.

    Of the 12 MLCs whose tenure is expiring, six are from the Samajwadi Party (SP)–Ramesh Yadav, Ahmed Hasan, Ashu Malik, Sahab Singh Saini, Ramjatan Rajbhar and Virendra Singh.

    Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma, Swatantra Dev Singh and Laxman Acharya are from the BJP.

    The tenure of BSP’s Pradeep Jatav and Dharamveer Ashok is also coming to an end.

    The term of Naseemudin Siddiqui, who left the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and joined the Congress, is also coming to an end.

    The poll panel had earlier issued guidelines to be followed during the entire election process.

    These guidelines state that every person shall wear a face mask during all election-related activities.

    At the entry of hall/room/premises used for election purposes, thermal scanning of all persons shall be carried out and sanitiser made available at all locations.

    Social distancing shall be maintained as per the COVID-19 guidelines of the state government and the Ministry of Home Affairs.

    The chief secretary of Uttar Pradesh has been directed to depute a senior officer from the state to ensure that the instructions regarding COVID-19 containment measures are complied with while making arrangements for conducting the elections, the Election Commission added.
