  • UP: Medical student kidnapped for Rs 70 lakh ransom

    GONDA: A medical student was allegedly kidnapped from the city and Rs 70 lakh ransom has been demanded from his family members for his release, police said on Tuesday.

    “Gaurav Haldhar, a resident of Kashipur locality in Payagpur area of Bahraich district, is studying BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine, and Surgery) in a private institute — SCPM College of Nursing and Medical Sciences, Haripur — and was residing in the hostel. He went missing from the hostel from Monday afternoon at about 3-4 pm,” Superintendent of Police Shailesh Kumar Pandey said.

    Gaurav’s father got a ransom call on Tuesday afternoon in which the callers demanded Rs 70 lakh ransom and threatened to kill his son if the money was not paid, he said.

    “Your son has been kidnapped. You pay Rs 70 lakh by Jan 22 if you want the release of your son,” the caller is purported to have said according to Gaurav’s father.

    The family, which were in search of Gaurav, immediately informed the police and an FIR was registered in the matter.

    The SP said that immediately senior officers rushed to the student’s college and inquired about him with his friends.

    “Teams have been constituted for safe release of the student. Special Operation Group and surveillance teams are also on the job,” the SP said. When asked about the development in the case, a senior officer said, “The call records of Gaurav are being looked into. We are trying to find clues from that. Also, the police is exploring if there is any CCTV installed around the college. All angles are being looked into.”

    The SP said Gaurav received a phone call between 2.30-3 pm on Monday after which he told his friends that he would come back after some time and went out of the hostel but did not return.

    “No one informed the police then,” the SP said adding that on Tuesday evening police came to know about the incident when family members got the ransom call.

  • Former BSP leaders Naseemuddin Siddiqui, Ramachal Rajbhar held in 2016 case, sent to jail

    LUCKNOW: Former BSP general secretary Naseemuddin Siddiqui and the party’s ex-state unit chief Ramachal Rajbhar have been arrested and sent to jail on Tuesday for allegedly using indecent and abusive language against the women members of BJP leader Dayashankar Singh’s family. 

    Both the leaders had surrendered in the MP/MLA court in connection with the case.

    Currently, Naseemuddin Siddiqui is a member of the Indian National Congress. Siddiqui was expelled from the BSP over his differences with party chief Mayawati on the charge of indulging in anti-party activities.

    Both Siddiqui and Rajbhar had surrendered after a special court for lawmakers on Monday ordered for the attachment of their properties for evading arrest in the case.

    As per the sources, as both the leaders were produced in the court, the special judge Pawan Kumar Rai ordered to send both to jail rejecting their application for interim bail. The court ordered the two leaders to file for regular bail on Wednesday.

    Siddiqui and Rajbhar were wanted in the case lodged against them on the basis of the complaint filed by Tetri Devi, mother of BJP leader Dayashankar Singh at Hazratganj police station in Lucknow on July 22, 2016.

    The matter pertained to an assembly of the BSP workers led by Naseemuddin Siddiqui and Ramachal Rajbhar at the Ambedkar statue in Hazaratganj in July 2016. During the gathering, both the leaders had used indecent language against the mother, wife, and daughter of Dayashankar Singh in response to the latter’s unpleasant comments on BSP supremo Mayawati. The leaders were also accused of inciting the mob for violence and vandalism.

    In the FIR lodged by Tetri Devi, Mayawati was also named as an accused. The other BSP leaders named in the case included Mewalal Gautam, Naushad Ali, and AS Rao. Lucknow police had filed the chargesheet in the connection with the case in the MP/MLA court on January 12, 2018.

  • Jokes on Hindu deities: UP cops reach Indore to take comedian Munawar Faruqui to Allahabad

    ALLAHABAD/INDORE: An Uttar Pradesh police team reached Indore Monday to take comedian Munawar Faruqui to an Allahabad court in a case of the alleged derogatory depiction of Hindu deities by him on social media.

    The UP police team presented to the authorities of Indore jail where the comedian has been lodged since his arrest by Madhya Pradesh police on January 1 in a similar case of the alleged objectionable depiction of deities, hurting religious sentiments of people.

    Police Inspector Dhakeshwar Singh of Allahabad Crime Branch said the city’s additional chief judicial magistrate had issued the production warrant against Faruqui on January 6 in a case which was lodged in the city last April on the complaint of a local advocate accusing the comedian of mocking and inuslting Hindu deities in his viral video clips on social media.

    The FIR against Faruqui was lodged in Allahabad’s George Town police station under sections 153 A and 295 A of the Indian Penal Code for allegedly committing offences affecting communal harmony and hurting religious sentiments of people, said Singh.

    The FIR also included various sections of the Information Technology Act, said Inspector Singh.

    The FIR lodged in Allahabad, however, did not give the correct address of the comedian but on the news of his arrest by Indore police, the UP police too moved the Allahabad court and secured the production warrant against him, he added.

    A UP police team presented the same warrant to an Indore magisterial court and the jail authorities there to bring him to Allahabad, said Singh.

    A media advisor UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, meanwhile, without naming Faruqui, said in a tweet that a UP police team has left for Indore to bring to the state a “fake comedian” who had insulted mother Sita.

    In Indore, Faruqui’s counsel Anshuman Srivastava said after learning about the issuance of a production warrant by an Allahabad court, he has moved the Madhya Pradesh High Court for expeditious hearing of his client’s bail plea.

    “We are awaiting the high court’s order on our application for early hearing of the plea,” he said.

  • Law student arrested in Gorakhpur for vulgar post against PM Modi, Yogi Adityanath

    GORAKHPUR: A law student of Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gorakhpur University has been arrested for allegedly putting up a vulgar post against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on social media, police said.

    The student was arrested on Sunday after which the university authorities also suspended him from the institution.

    “The youth was arrested and jailed on Sunday under Section 153A (Promoting enmity between different groups on ground of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc), 469 (whoever commits forgery, intending that the document or electronic record 1 forged shall harm the reputation of any party) IPC and also under Section 66 of IT Act (Punishment for sending offensive messages through communication service, etc)” Circle officer Cantt , Sumit Shukla, said.

    As per the FIR lodged by the police itself taking cognisance of the post, LLB first year student Arun Yadav, a resident of Panditpura village in Chauri Chaura area, posted a vulgar post on social media and also wrote an objectionable remark a few days ago that was deleted later.

    As per the media cell of DDU Gorakhpur University, the IT team of varsity recorded the post and suspended him and also a disciplinary committee has been constituted against the student and it will submit the report soon.

    The varsity also issued a notice against the student to present his side otherwise strict action would be taken against him.

    The varsity also tried to contact him but his phone was switched off.

  • Woman’s body found hanging from tree in UP: FIR against three for rape, murder

    MAHOBA: An FIR was registered against three men on Monday for allegedly raping and killing a Dalit woman, whose body was found hanging from a tree in this Uttar Pradesh district, police said.

    On a complaint from the victim’s mother, an FIR was registered against Rohit, Bhupendra and Tarun on charges of rape and under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, SHO, Kulpahad police station, Ravindra Tiwari said.

    A probe is on in the matter.

    No arrest has so far been made.

    The victim (18) left home to buy vegetables on Saturday afternoon but did not return.

    Later, her family members found her body hanging from a tree in the Belatal area, Circle Officer Rampravesh Rai had said.

    The woman’s aunt told the police on Sunday that she was being harassed by a man in their locality, who was making phone calls to her for the last one month.

    She alleged that the victim’s body was hanged from the tree after she was killed, the officer had said.

  • Truck-load of govt ration seized from SP leader’s warehouse in Uttar Pradesh

    BADAUN (UP): A truck-load of government ration was seized from the warehouse of a Samajwadi Party leader in Alapur area here following a joint raid by a team of the revenue and food and civil supply departments, an official said on Thursday.

    The administration had received inputs about foodgrains meant to be distributed under the public distribution system being diverted to the black market, District Supply Officer Raman Pratap Singh said.

    The raid was carried out on Wednesday following a directive from District Magistrate Kumar Prashant and we seized 550 sacks of rice, Singh added.

    Fahimuddin, the SP leader, failed to provide a convincing answer when asked about the presence of government ration in his warehouse, he said, adding that the same amount of foodgrains were found missing from a neighbouring ration shop.

    An FIR would be lodged against the ration shop owner and SP leader, he said.

    Fahimuddin is the district secretary of the SP, Prem Pal Singh Yadav, the party’s district unit president said.

    According to Yadav, he had no information about government ration being recovered from Fahimuddin’s warehouse and said that he was waiting to get an “authentic report” on the matter.

  • Badaun gangrape case: Priest, other accused remanded to police custody

    BADAUN (UP): A temple priest and his accomplices accused of raping and killing a 50-year-old woman here have been remanded to one-day police custody by a local court.

    Circle officer of Bilsi, Anirudh Singh, said on Wednesday that, “The three accused persons in the Ughaiti incident have already been sent to jail. But there are some questions which need to be answered. For this, it is necessary to take the three accused on remand”.

    A request through video conferencing was made to the court of the chief judicial magistrate for police remand on Tuesday and the request was granted.

    The family members of the woman had accused the temple priest and his accomplices of raping and killing the woman, an anganwadi worker.

    A case was registered against the accused and two of them identified as Vedram and Jaspal were arrested on January 5. Later the priest was also arrested.

    The incident triggered an opposition outcry and a comparison with the 2012 Nirbhaya case in Delhi after the post-mortem report confirmed rape, broken rib cage, a fractured leg and other injuries.

    Budaun CMO, Dr Yashpal Singh, had said that the woman died of trauma and excessive bleeding.

  • AAP MLA Somnath Bharti arrested for derogatory remarks on condition of UP hospitals

    LUCKNOW: Aam Admi Party (AAP) MLA Somnath Bharti was arrested in Amethi on Monday for his alleged derogatory statement about the condition of hospitals in Uttar Pradesh. The arrest was made under Section 151 of the CrPC.

    Earlier in the day, ink was thrown at the AAP MLA by a youth while he was talking to police personnel over his visit to Rae Bareli district.

    Following the incident, Bharti got into an altercation with cops over his visit to Amethi. He was detained at a guest house. Meanwhile, the youth who threw ink on Bharti fled the spot.

    Bharti has been on a visit to Amethi and Rae Bareli. The incident occurred when he was trying to visit a school in Rae Bareli. 

    He had previously made a controversial comment regarding the condition of hospitals in the state. The AAP leader had reached Rae Bareli on Sunday night to inspect some government schools.

    Later talking to media persons, Bharti called it the “handiwork of BJP workers” while raising questions over the law and order situation in UP.

    On getting the information about the incident, CO Anjani Kumar Chaturvedi reached the spot. The MLA allegedly told the CO that the right-wing workers tryingto intimidate and that ink was thrown at him in the presence of cops.

    Bharti claimed that he was in Rae Bareli to oversee party’s preparations for the upcoming panchayat polls.

    AAP MP Sanjay Singh, meanwhile, said that the dictatorship in Uttar Pradesh was reaching a crescendo and efforts were being made to browbeat AAP leaders who raise questions on the poor conditions of health and education facilities in the state.

  • UP cop, accused of assault and loot, suspended for ‘indecency’

    NOIDA: A policeman deployed in Uttar Pradesh’s Gautam Buddh Nagar has been suspended for “indecency” after being accused of assaulting and looting two people, who had given him a lift in their car, officials said on Saturday.

    A senior police official said the accused head constable, who is attached with the Dadri police station, has been suspended for “indecency” as the allegations of loot and assault have not been proved.

    According to the complainant, he and his brother were headed to Bulandshahr from Noida around 3 pm on Friday when Head Constable Ombir Bhati hitchhiked a ride in their car.

    The complainant has alleged that during the ride, the policeman threatened them with his firearm and took away some documents and cash from them.

    “Head Constable Ombir Bhati has been found guilty of indecency and has been suspended from service.

    A departmental inquiry has been initiated into the matter.

    Other allegations, including firing and loot, have not been confirmed,” Deputy Commissioner of Police, Greater Noida, Rajesh Kumar Singh said.

    Around a dozen policemen have been shunted or suspended for assaulting, manhandling or harassing people across Noida and Greater Noida in Gautam Buddh Nagar district since May 2020.

  • Police give clean chit to two brothers charged under UP’s anti-conversion law

    MUZAFFARNAGAR: The police here have given a clean chit to two men charged under Uttar Pradesh’s anti-conversion law for allegedly trying to change the religion of a woman, an official said.

    An FIR was earlier registered against brothers Nadeem and Salman for allegedly trying to unlawfully convert a woman to another religion but no evidence has been found against them, said Dharmendra Pal, SHO of Mansurpur police station where the case was filed.

    The duo was charged under the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Ordinance, 2020, and Indian Penal Code sections 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and 506 (criminal intimidation), he said.

    The Allahabad high court, which is hearing an appeal in connection with the case, has been informed that there is no evidence that the two men tried to change the woman’s religion.
