  • NSA slapped on man held for spitting on dough while making rotis in UP

    By Express News Service
LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh government has invoked the National Security Act (NSA) against cook Naushad, who was arrested for spitting on the dough while making rotis at a wedding function in the Meerut district last month.

The process of NSA was completed by the police on Thursday and the file was sent to DM for approval on Thursday.

Naushad was arrested after a video clip showing his disgusting and unhygienic act went viral on social media. The video, shot by one of the guests at the wedding at Aroma Garden of Lishari Gate in Meerut, caught Naushad spitting on the rotis before putting them in the tandoor for the dinner at a party on February 16.

The guest, who had filmed Naushad, shared the video with other guests at the party and they left the function without having food.

Later, social activist Sachin Sirohi, associated with Hindu Jagran Manch, and his accomplices staged a protest at Lala Lajpat Rai Medical College Police Station. This was followed by the registration of a case against Naushad under the Epidemic Act and relevant sections of IPC on February 19, and Naushad was arrested and sent to jail.

During the investigation, the police found the charges of spitting in the dough to be true.

Recently, when Naushad was produced in the local court for a hearing on his bail application, a group of irate lawyers and the common public thrashed him. He was also beaten up when he came out of the court.

“The NSA was slapped against him as his release from the jail might create law and order problems in the city,” said Meerut SSP Ajay Sahni.

Meanwhile, a similar case was reported from Ghaziabad where a cook was caught on camera spitting on the dough while making rotis. The Ghaziabad Police are also in the process of invoking the NSA against the arrested cook.

  • Day after lodging complaint about minor daughter’s rape, UP man dies in ‘accident’

    Express News Service
LUCKNOW: The father of a minor girl, who was allegedly gangraped by four men in UP’s Kanpur district, was killed after he was hit by an unidentified truck on Wednesday.

Expressing doubts about the accident, which came a day after they lodged a complaint about the rape, the girl’s family said the rape accused could be behind it.

They pointed out that the father of one of the accused is a police official.

The prime accused in the rape case, Golu Yadav, son of a police sub-inspector posted in Kannauj, was arrested earlier and efforts were underway to nab his brother Saurabh and friend Deepu, Kanpur Deputy IG Preetinder Singh said.

While the medical examination of the rape survivor was going on at the community health centre (CHC) in Ghatampur, her father went out for a cup of tea and was hit by a truck, Singh said.

The minor’s father was taken to the Lala Lajpat Rai (LLR) Hospital, where he succumbed to the injuries.

Superintendent of Police (Rural) Brajesh Srivastava said an FIR was registered on charges of murder against Devendra Yadav, the father of the accused.

“The accident took place when the medical examination of the victim was underway and the father stepped out for a cup of tea. After some time, we got to know that he was hit by a truck. He was immediately taken to a Kanpur hospital, but was declared brought dead. We have filed an accident case and are probing,” said Kanpur DIG Preetinder Singh.

The truck driver and one of the rape accused have been arrested, he added.

The family members of the deceased alleged in the FIR that Devendra Yadav hatched a conspiracy to kill him and make it look like a road accident.

Five police teams, including surveillance personnel, have been formed to nab Saurabh and Deepu.

The probe has been handed over to Ghatampur Station House Officer Dhanesh Kumar, who has been asked to investigate the charges and work out the case at the earliest, the police said.

The action against the SI would be decided only after the probe confirms his involvement in the alleged murder, they said.

According to the police, the 13-year-old girl was allegedly raped by Golu Yadav and Deepu in Sajeti area here on Monday.

The Class 8 student had gone out to collect fodder for cattle on Monday when she was abducted by the duo and taken to a secluded place where she was allegedly raped.

Saurabh had allegedly threatened the minor of dire consequences if she told anyone about the incident, the police said.

After the accident, locals blocked the Kanpur-Sagar highway for five hours demanding a swift action. UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced Rs 5 lakh to the girl’s family.

UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced a compensation of Rs five lakhs from the CM’s relief fund to the family, while Rs five lakhs more would be provided under accident insurance scheme, Kanpur District Magistrate Alok Tiwari said.

It has also been decided to provide three bighas of land on lease to the victim’s family, the DM added.

Kanpur Additional DG Bhanu Bhaskar told PTI over phone that directions have been issued to swiftly crack the case of the rape survivor’s father’s death on the basis of “evidence” and ensure the arrest of the remaining accused in the gang rape case.

Officials have also been instructed to book the accused persons under the National Security Act and the Gangsters Act, the ADG said.

Kanpur IG Mohit Agarwal also issued a statement, stating both the cases will be investigated swiftly and no one will be spared.

“The guilty will face tough legal action. We are considering taking action under the National Security Act,” the IG added.

Meanwhile, the girl’s relatives and outraged locals blocked traffic on the Kanpur-Sagar Highway in protest.

The girl’s grandfather has alleged that his son was murdered in complicity with the police.

  • Rising rapes, crimes against women: Unnao emerges as challenge for Yogi Adityanath government

    Express News Service
LUCKNOW: A town of around 35 lakh people, Unnao is only 70 km from the state capital Lucknow. The peculiar downside of the semi-urban district — crime — brackets it with notoriety that even the tough Yogi Adityanath government has been unable to tame.

Crimes against women have spiralled with law and order emerging as a major challenge for the four-year-old BJP government in the country’s most politically dominant state.

The freshest is last week’s case wherein three minor Dalit girls were found unconscious and frothing in their field in Baburaha village under Asoha police station area.

While two of them succumbed to alleged poisoning, the third is undergoing treatment at a Kanpur hospital. After remaining on life support for almost a week, the survivor has recorded her statement.

The case is a potent tool for the opposition to censure the Yogi government, especially on women’s security.

Unnao has hit headlines several times in the last three years for reporting heinous crimes against women. When the BJP government completed its first year in office in 2018, the infamous Makhi rape case drew widespread outrage at national and international level.

A minor tried to commit immolation in front of the Chief Minister’s house in seeking arrest of then Bangarmau BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar and his cohorts, accusing them of her rape and custodial death of her father. She charged Sengar with prevailing over Makhi police station officials and getting her father beaten to death in the lock-up.

The case led to nationwide outrage and demonstrations that finally prompted the state government to recommend a CBI probe. The CBI made Sengar the main accused. He was later convicted by a special CBI court and was awarded life sentence which he is serving in Tihar Jail in Delhi.

While the local people blame the police for the state of affairs, political commentators say the state government efforts to ensure women’s safety were limited to only urban areas.

They say that in villages, there is a need to chalk out a fresh strategy that involves senior citizens to speed up resolution efforts.

“The police in Unnao have become completely politicised. They do not move unless allowed by their political bosses. This attitude encourages criminals,” says senior advocate Kalinath Shukla, a resident of Ajgain.

Some of the top politicians in Uttar Pradesh belong to Unnao. They include Uttar Pradesh Assembly Speaker Hriday Narain Dixit, Law Minister Brijesh Pathak and BJP MP Sakshi Maharaj. However, senior police officers say all-out efforts are being made to check crime.

“The state might have taken many steps but an incident here and an episode there would often upset the whole scheme of things. Moreover, Uttar Pradesh is a huge state to manage,” says Prof AK Mishra, a political scientist of Lucknow University. While the police authorities claim that the number of crimes against women has gone down in the state, Unnao is a notorious standalone.

With the state assembly elections are a year away, the incidents like the Unnao poison case, a Dalit woman being burnt alive by five men of a Thakur family, or the acts of the likes of Kuldeep Sengar will continue to fuel belligerence in the opposition camp.

The UP police though its various social media accounts, especially on Twitter, has often taken to humorous posts to reach out to netizens.

This time it was the Call 112 service which sought to cash on on the viral “pawri (party) ho rahi hai” meme.

The post made on Sunday afternoon has been retweeted by nearly 3,000 Twitter users and ‘liked’ by almost 10,000, when last checked on Monday night.

The meme set the social media on fire after it surfaced online last week with Dananeer Mobeen, a Pakistan-based Instagram influencer, speaking in a heavily-accented tone as she stood partying with some friends with their car parked on a road.

“Ye humari car hai, ye hum hain aur ye humari pawri (party) ho rahi hai,” she says in the social media post, which has now transcended the country’s borders for its fun quotient.
