  • Yogi Adityanath welcomes Supreme Court’s order on UP civic body polls

    LUCKNOW: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath welcomed the Supreme Court order on Urban Local Body polls in the state saying his government will hold the elections within the time limit given by the apex court.

    Adityanath also reiterated the state government’s commitment to implementing the OBC reservationin Urban Local Bodies on the basis of the report of the OBC commission set up by it till March 31.

    The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister tweeted, “We welcome the Supreme Court’s order regarding civic polls in UP. We will cooperate in the conductance of Urban Local Body polls in the state while implementing the OBC quota within the time limit given by the apex court.”

    The UP government had challenged the Allahabad High Court order blocking the OBC quota in civic polls and asking the state Election Commission to hold the polls before January 31.

    After the HC order, the opposition, including SP and BSP, had targeted the state government accusing it of being anti-OBC. Following the apex court’s order on Wednesday, Samajwadi Party said the order had vindicated its stand over the issue.

    The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court had ordered that the state government notified the polls “immediately” as the term of several municipalities would end by January 31.

  • Violence mars UP poll nominations, SP submits complaint

    LUCKNOW:  Widespread violence was reported on Thursday from various parts of Uttar Pradesh during the filing of nominations for the July 10 Block Pramukh polls. Kannauj, Sitapur, Unnao, Bulandshahar, Pilibhit, Unnao, Jhansi, Basti, Gorakhpur, Sambhal, Chitrakoot, Jalaun, Ayodhya, Fatehpur, Etah, Ambedkar Nagar and Maharajganj districts reported clashes.

    SP chief Akhilesh Yadav alleged that the law and order was held hostage by the BJP. SP state president Naresh Uttam Patel submitted a memorandum at the poll panel, alleging large scale violence by BJP and failure of local administration and police in stopping the violence.

    In Sitapur an independent candidate was allegedly stopped from filing nominations amid firing and lobbing of crude bombs in the presence of the police, which resulted in injuries to three persons. Alleging violence by the BJP, the candidate’s supporters blocked the highway following which the police used batons to disperse the protesters.

    In Kannauj, the ruling BJP and opposition SP workers clashed with reports of stone pelting and firing. Similar scenes played out at Unnao district. In Kanpur Dehat, a panchayat member backed by the SP claimed being assaulted by BJP workers.

    In Ambedkar Nagar, some miscreants snatched the nomination papers from former BSP minister Lalji Varma leading to violent clashes. “It is BJP leader Tejaswi Jaiswal who snatched the papers which led to tension and clashes,” claimed Varma.

    Incidents of some people brandishing firearms and tearing the nomination papers of rivals were reported from Shahjahanpur, Ambedkar Nagar and Basti. In Siddharthnagar, the SP claimed former Assembly Speaker Mata Prasad Pandey was roughed up and his vehicle damaged by BJP supporters. 

  • Uttar Pradesh government announces reservation policy for three-tier rural civic body elections

    LUCKNOW:  With  three-tier rural body elections iround the corner, the Uttar Pradesh government has announced the reservation policy for the posts of District Panchayat President, Block Chief, and Village Heads.

    The Panchayati Raj Department released the list related to number of posts reserved in each tier of the rural local bodies. As per the list, 48 of the 75 posts of district panchayat chiefs will be reserved leaving out just 27 unreserved seats for general category candidates.

    Further, out of 826 block head posts in the state, 512 posts have been reserved for different categories, while 314 posts will be unreserved. This is for the first time that the Scheduled Tribes have got a chunk of seats reserved for them.

    Director of Panchayati Raj Department Kinjal Singh said elections will be held for 58,194 posts of village heads. Out of which, 37,826 seats have been reserved for various sections. After the announcement of reservation policy, path has been cleared for the election commission to notify the rural body polls in the state. As per the directives of the Allahabad High Court, the election for village heads have to be completed by April 30.
