  • Kanpur: Samajwadi Party youth wing office-bearer shot dead, accused arrested

    KANPUR: A young Samajwadi Party office bearer was shot dead allegedly by a fellow party affiliate in Barra area here, a senior police officer said on Saturday.

    The incident took place on on Friday evening and the deceased person has been identified as Harsh Yadav (20), a law student and resident of Damodar Nagar in Barra.

    Yadav was recently made the district vice-president of Samajwadi Yuvjan Sabha of Kanpur Dehat, said an official.

    Police, however, claimed to have arrested prime accused Shivendra Singh (23), who has an affiliation with the SP, on Saturday morning in an encounter.

    Kanpur Police Commissioner Asim Arun said the accused confessed to his crime during interrogation.

    Singh and Yadav had gone together outside for drinks and they fought over some issues related to liquor.

    An angry Singh took out an illegal pistol in his possession and fired at Harsh, who sustained bullet injuries on his head, forehead and stomach, resulting in his death, police said.

  • UP cops arrest 3 who duped techie with ‘12.5 million pound’ e-mail offer

    NOIDA: The Uttar Pradesh police have arrested three men for allegedly duping a Noida-based software engineer of Rs 60 lakh on the pretext of making him heir of 12.5 million pound of a fictitious London resident, officials said.

    The accused were held on Friday from Bareilly district by officials of the Cyber Crime Police Station Noida over the con job that started two years ago, they said.

    According to police, the victim Tarun Varshney was approached by the accused through an e-mail on January 8, 2019 which was signed in the name of ‘Advocate Bruise Eddie’.

    “The engineer was informed of the death of an Indian origin man Braj Varshney in a car crash in London in 2015. It was claimed that the deceased had 12. 5 million pound and the engineer was chosen as his nominee due to their matching ‘gotras’,” police said in a statement.

    However, the e-mail stated that 50 per cent of the money would go to advocate Eddie as commission for his work.

    “Subsequently, Varshney started getting mails from email IDs such as ‘United Kingdom Attorney’ and ‘Netix Bank London’ asking him to complete some documental formalities,” police said.

    Eventually he was told that the money had been transferred to the Reserve Bank of India, Mumbai after which Varshney started getting e-mails from an ID that claimed to be foreign currency exchange department in Dehradun.

    “Thereafter, the software engineer was asked to deposit money in 25 different bank accounts on pretexts like customs duty, registry service, and fees such as legal heir change, foreign currency exchange, among others, with the accused duping Rs 60 lakh in total from him,” the UP police said.

    An FIR was lodged in the case and investigation taken up, leading to the arrest of Akeeluddin (30), Anees Ahmed (23) and Asleem Khan (23) – all native residents of Bareilly district, they said.

    The police added that 25 bank accounts with Rs 13 lakh and controlled by the trio have been frozen, while further proceedings in the case are underway.

  • UP: Deaf-mute man taken to hospital for Covid vaccination, sterilized, alleges brother

    ETAH: A 45-year-old deaf-mute man was allegedly sterilized at a hospital here after being brought to the facility on the pretext of getting him vaccinated against COVID-19, police said on Tuesday.

    According to the complaint lodged by Ashok Kumar, his brother Dhruv Kumar was allegedly taken to the hospital by ASHA worker Neelam Devi under the pretence of administering him the vaccine last Sunday.

    He was, instead, taken to a women’s hospital where he was sterilized without being informed, the complainant alleged.

    The victim is a resident of Vashunpuram village.

    The ASHA worker had also lured him with a promise that Rs 3,500 will be paid to him, Inspector in-charge, Awagarh, Vijay Pratap Singh said, citing the complaint.

    Ashok Kumar claimed that his brother is unmarried, the inspector said.

    No FIR has so far been filed in this connection and the matter is being probed, he said.

    But the version of district Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Umesh Tripathi differs. Tripathi said he got the matter investigated through the ACMO and a team also visited the village concerned but could not meet the victim.

    “No fault of ASHA worker has been found in the whole sequence of events. The sister-in-law of the man had misguided her and asked her to take him for the procedure, saying he has three children,” the CMO said.

    The sister-in-law had also claimed that Dhruv’s wife had gone away as he was jobless, the CMO said, adding that the medical team had no need to investigate whether the man is married or not.

  • UP: Bodies of woman, 2 daughters found in Rohini river in Gorakhpur

    GORAKHPUR: The bodies of a 40-year-old woman and her two daughters were found floating in the Rohini river here, police said on Tuesday.

    The girls were tied to their mother’s saree and the three didn’t have any injury marks on their bodies, they said, adding it was a suspected case of suicide.

    The bodies of Maya and her daughters, Shivani (13) and Arpita (9), were found floating in the river in Jangal Kaudia locality of the Pipiganj area on Monday morning.

    “It appears as if Maya tied the girls with her saree and jumped into the river,” Station House Officer (SHO) SP Singh said.

    On Sunday, Maya had an argument with her husband Shailesh Kanaujia after which she went out with the girls and didn’t return, police said.

    Later in the day, he informed the police about the three of them having gone missing.

    On Monday morning, Kanaujia left for Ahmedabad where he works as a carpenter, thinking she would return.

    When he reached Gonda, he received a phone call from police, informing him about the recovery of the bodies so he came back.

    As per locals, the couple used to have frequent fights as Maya suspected him of having an extramarital affair.

    The bodies were sent for postmortem and further investigation in the case was on.

  • 70-year-old woman raped in UP, accused held

    LALITPUR: A 70-year-old woman was allegedly raped by a 21-year-old man in Uttar Pradesh’s Lalitpur district, police said on Saturday.

    The accused has been arrested, they said.

    The woman was allegedly raped by the youth on Wednesday night when she was sleeping.

    She was alone at home at the time of the incident, said Sub-Inspector Digvijay Singh, incharge of Bar police station.

    A case was registered on Thursday and the accused arrested on Friday, the police said.

  • UP panchayat poll candidate killed in Bhadohi

    BHADOHI: A candidate in the Uttar Pradesh panchayat polls was beaten to death at a village here, police said.

    Lalji Gautam (51) was attacked by members of his rival group at Dudwa Dharampuri village on Monday night, Circle Officer Prayank Jai said.

    He died on Tuesday at his house, the officer said, adding that Gautam was a candidate for the post of village head.

    Four persons have been detained in the case and a probe is on in the matter, Jai said.

  • One held for raping 16-year-old in UP’s Ballia

    BALLIA: A 24-year-old man was arrested on Saturday in connection with the alleged rape of a 16-year-old girl in this district of Uttar Pradesh, police said on Saturday.

    Superintendent of Police Vipin Tada said the girl was allegedly raped in the evening of April 4 when she was returning from her field.

    A case was registered against the accused based on a complaint lodged by the girl’s mother, police said, adding the minor has been sent for medical examination.

  • 15-year-old girl in UP sets herself on fire after being molested by boy

    HAMIRPUR: A 15-year-old girl set herself ablaze at a village here on Tuesday morning after allegedly being molested by a boy, police said.

    The girl has been rushed to Kanpur for specialised treatment as she has received severe burn injuries, they said.

    Hamirpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Narendra Kumar Singh said on Monday afternoon the girl’s family had beaten up the 16-year-old boy for allegedly molesting her.

    The victim’s family had at that time refused to lodge a complaint.

    The girl’s family, however, later alleged that the boy used to often tease and harass the girl and had done the same on Monday.

    The police had let the accused go after warning him.

    Disturbed by repeated harassments and molestation on Monday, the girl sprinkled kerosene on herself around 8 am on Tuesday and set herself ablaze, according to her family.

    Before sending the girl to Kanpur for further treatment, her statement has been recorded in front of a magistrate, the SP said, adding further action will be taken on the basis of the complaint of the girl’s family.

    LUCKNOW: Three persons were arrested on Wednesday in connection with the murder of a 20-year-old college student whose decomposed body was found near a canal in Shahjahanpur district of Uttar Pradesh a day before.

    Hari Om Singh was studying in the law college run by former Union minister Chinmayanand’s trust, Mumukshu Ashram, and had gone missing after appearing for his third semester exams on March 19.“We were searching for the student after his family filed a ‘missing’ FIR on March 20. On Tuesday, we recovered his body near a canal in the forest area of Katra. There were multiple injuries on the body indicating it was a murder,” said Shahjahanpur SP S Anand, adding that some of the classmates of the victim were taken into custody.

    During questioning, one of them told police that they killed Hari Om because he had molested his girlfriend. To take revenge, three of them took the victim to a forest and attacked him with a sickle, the SP said. They have been arrested and booked for murder.

    Hari Om’s body was recovered the same day when a 23-year-old college student, who was found with severe burn injuries along a national highway in Shahjahanpur last month, succumbed in Lucknow Civil Hospital. According to SP Anand, the doctors treating her said she had shown great recovery but her condition deteriorated suddenly and she died around 2 am on Tuesday. 

    Three sentenced to death in 2018 rape-murder case  Three persons were awarded a death sentence by a local POCSO court on Wednesday for abducting, raping and killing a minor girl in Bulandshahr in 2018. The incident had sparked widespread outrage after the girl, a student of Class XII, on her way back home from tuition  classes was kidnapped by the accused on a car and later, raped and murdered. The accused were arrested a few days after the incident. The police revealed the case after arresting the three – Dilshad, Israel and Zulfikar — of Sikandarabad locality in Bulandshahr.

  • UP: Raped by two men 27 years ago, woman files complaint against both after her son asks for father’s name

    SHAHJAHANPUR: Raped on several occasions by two men at the age of 12 about 27 years ago, the victim, who had become a mother, has now lodged a case against the accused on court orders after her son enquired about his father’s name.

    About 27 years ago, the victim was living in the city with her sister and brother-in-law.

    One Naki Hasan of her locality had entered the house when she was alone and allegedly raped her, Superintendent of Police (City) Sanjay Kumar told PTI on Saturday.

    Referring to the police report lodged on the basis of the woman’s complaint, Kumar said after the accused, his younger brother Guddu also raped her.

    The victim has alleged that she was raped by both the accused on multiple occasions.

    She was 12 years of age at the time of the incident, the SP said.

    According to the complainant, she became pregnant at the age of 13 and gave birth to a boy in 1994.

    The infant was given to a person belonging to the victim’s native village Udhampur, located within the Shahabad police station limits, while she moved to Rampur as her brother-in-law got transferred there.

    The SP said the victim’s brother-in-law got her married to a man in Ghazipur district, but after 10 years, when her husband came to know that she was raped, he divorced her and she returned to Udhampur.

    Meanwhile, the boy who had grown up by now enquired about his mother and father and was told his mother’s name.

    The boy met the victim and got to know about the incident, the SP said, adding that on Friday evening, a case of gangrape was lodged against the two accused at the Sadar Bazar police station on the basis of her complaint.

    Kumar said the police are investigating the case and the DNA test of the boy would be conducted.

    The woman had moved the court after the police refused to entertain her complaint.
