  • Another shooting in UP, woman killed in broad daylight by two men on motorbike

    LUCKNOW: A day after the public murder of gangsters Atiq and Ashraf,  a 21-year-old woman was shot at and killed in broad daylight by two men on a motorcycle in the Jalaun district on Monday.

    As per police sources, Roshni, a second-year student of the Bachelor of Arts (BA), was shot dead by two motorcycle-borne men at Kotra crossing on Monday. The victim was returning home after taking her examination when the incident took place. She succumbed to her injuries en route to the hospital.

    “Roshini had gone to write her digital marketing paper at Ram Lakhan Patel Degree College in Ait town of the district,” said a police official.

    According to SP, Jalaun, Iraj Raja, the victim received the bullet shot in her head at around 11.30 am while she was on her way back home from her college.

    However, the assailants had sped away after committing the crime. The victim’s parents lodged a complaint naming Raj Ahirwar as the culprit and based on it, police registered a case and arrested him. Ahirwar was being interrogated, said the SP.

    One of the two assailants was arrested by the local police acting on the complaint filed by the victim’s father.

    As per the local sources, the culprits had come with a covered face to attack the girl near the Kotra trisection. The video of the incident going viral of social media showed the victim, who died on the spot, lying in college uniform facing the ground in a pool of blood with the murder weapon lying beside her.

    By the time police reached the spot, locals had gathered at the spot, and the market had gone closed.

    While the police officials refused to comment on the possible reason of the murder saying the investigation was on to ascertain it, the local sources claimed that it could be case of one-side affair where the jilted lover shot the victim dead after the girl refused to his advances.

    GONDA: A woman was allegedly raped after being given some intoxicating substance by her 25-year-old nephew, police said here on Friday.

    The incident happened on Wednesday, they said adding the 42-year-old woman was going to market when her nephew offered to drop her off.

    According to the police, the duo stopped to have tea which was spiked by the accused.

    After the woman became unconscious, the youth allegedly raped her and filmed the act, they said.

    The accused threatened the victim of uploading the video on the internet which he did subsequently and took it down after some time, the police said.

    On the complaint of the victim, a case has been registered at Chhapia police station on Thursday under sections of the Indian Penal Code, Circle officer (Mankapur) Sanjay Talwar said The woman was sent for a medical examination, he said, adding efforts are on to arrest the accused.

  • UP man booked for raping minor, posting crime video on social media

    MUZAFFARNAGAR: A 21-year-old man was booked for allegedly raping a minor girl and posting the video of the crime on social media platforms, police said on Sunday.

    Station House Officer, Bhopa Police Station, Brijendra Singh Rawat said, “A 15-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a man who befriended her at a coaching centre. An FIR of rape has been lodged and we are investigating the matter,” he said, adding that the accused is currently absconding.

    According to the complaint lodged by the family members of the victim, the incident took place in January but the victim had not informed her family about the incident.

    “The accused had allegedly recorded the entire incident and later shared it on the social media on Saturday. When the victim’s family came to know about the incident they lodged a police complaint,” said the SHO.

    The accused has been booked under sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the IT Act.

  • UP: Man gets 14 years jail term for raping minor

    MUZAFFARNAGAR: A special POCSO court here has sentenced a man to 14 years of imprisonment for raping a 16-year-old girl in 2019.

    Sanjiv Kumar Tiwari, the special judge, also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on Teenu, the convict, after holding him guilty under Indian Penal Code (IPC) Section 376 (punishment for rape), and Sections 3 and 4 (penetrative sexual assault) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

    Teenu will have to serve an additional jail term of six months in case he fails to pay the fine, the judge said.

    According to Manmohan Verma, the special POCSO advocate, the incident took place on March 2, 2019.

    The man raped the girl when she ventured out of the house to relieve herself.

  • Shahjahanpur advocate murder: Lawyers demand increased security

    SHAHJAHANPUR: A day after an advocate was gunned down at the district court here, lawyers on Tuesday demanded increased security at the court premises and decided that people will be let in only after checking their identity cards.

    A condolence meeting was also held at the court for Bhupendra Singh (58), who was shot dead by a fellow lawyer, Suresh Gupta, over an old rivalry on Monday.

    According to police, Gupta was upset with Singh as he had filed over two dozen cases against him.

    Singh of Jalalabad tehsil had gone to the third-floor office of ACJM-I of the district court to meet a clerk regarding a case when the gunshot was heard and he was found dead, the police had said.

    General secretary of Central Bar Association Shahjahanpur Aneet Trivedi told PTI that a condolence meeting was held for Singh.

    It was decided that visitors should be allowed to enter the court premises only after checking their identity cards.

    Often it has been seen that criminals enter courts wearing black coats, he said.

    A demand for providing increased security to advocates was also made, he added.

    Gupta has been arrested for Singh’s murder.

    His two sons, Gaurav and Ankit, have also been booked in connection with the case, according to the police.

  • Viewing women as manifestations of Goddess could help curb crime against them: Yogi Adityanath

    GORAKHPUR: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday urged people to view women as manifestations of the Goddess and said that this could help curb crime against them.

    The chief minister was speaking to reporters here after performing ‘Mahanavami pujan’ on the last day of the nine-day festival of Navratri.

    Earlier in the day, he performed ‘Kanya Pujan’ after washing the feet of young girls.

    He also served lunch to the girls and ‘Batuk’ (boys).

    Daughters and sisters should be accorded goddess-like sanctity, Adityanath said.

    If women are seen as manifestations of the Goddess, many incidents of crime happening against them can be prevented, he added.

    The chief minister also appealed to people to join hands for women’s education, health and security.

    He also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for launching the ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ scheme, saying it paved the way for women empowerment.

    Adityanath also listed various state government schemes like the ‘Kanya Sumangal Yojana’ that seek to “empower women”.

    “The scheme ensures a monetary aid of Rs 15,000 in phases for the education of a girl child up to graduation,” he said.

    Under the ‘Mukhya Mantri Samuhik Vivah Yojana’, he said, the government supports families of poor women who can’t afford to pay for their weddings.

    Adityanath also extended Vijay Dashmi greetings to the people and said that the festival is a reminder to walk on the path of “truth, dharma (religion) and nyay (justice)”.

    “Even the biggest powers can be defeated by walking on the path of truth, justice and dharma and it certainly ensures victory,” he said.

    Adityanath will lead a traditional ‘Shobha Yatra’ on the occasion of Vijay Dashmi on Friday from the Gorakhnath temple.

  • Key accused in Dalit woman’s gangrape in UP’s Jewar arrested

    NOIDA: Police in Uttar Pradesh’s Gautam Buddh Nagar district on Wednesday said they have arrested the key accused in a case of gangrape of a 55-year-old Dalit woman in Jewar three days ago.

    The woman was allegedly raped by four men, who dragged her to the open fields near her village at gunpoint and took turns to force themselves on her on Sunday morning.

    One of the accused was arrested on Monday.

    The incident has snowballed into a political controversy with opposition parties such as the BSP and the Congress hitting out at the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh over the issue of women safety.

    “Accused Mahendra was arrested on Wednesday from a spot near his village in Jewar. He was picked up by a joint team of the Jewar police, the Special Operations Group and the SWAT,” a police spokesperson said.

    “A reward of Rs 25,000 was announced on information leading to the arrest of Mahendra in the wake of the incident in which another person has already been arrested and sent to jail,” he added.

    An FIR in connection with the incident has been lodged under Indian Penal Code sections 376D (gangrape), 352 (punishment for assault or criminal force otherwise than on grave provocation) and 506 (criminal intimidation), police said.

    Sections under the stringent Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 have also been invoked in the case, they added.

    Mahendra, according to the police, was also booked for house trespassing and theft in the past. He is the only named accused in the FIR.

    Of the three other accused, one was arrested on Monday after the rape survivor identified him from a picture shown to her by the police.

  • Man arrested for raping teenage girl in UP’s Muzaffarnagar

    MUZAFFARNAGAR: A man was arrested for allegedly raping a 16-year-old girl here in a village under Budhana area here, police said on Friday.

    Station House Officer Rajiv Kumar said a case was registered against Gulab Singh on Thursday and he has been arrested.

    A medical examination confirmed rape.

    The girl was produced before a magistrate and gave her statement under Section 164 of CrPC.

    In their complaint, the girl’s family alleged that Singh had promised he would marry the girl and established physical relations with her.

    He later refused to marry her and allegedly threatened her of dire consequences if she disclosed the matter to anyone.

  • Two girls taken hostage, gang-raped in UP cyber cafe by four men

    KANNAUJ (Uttar Pradesh): Two girls were allegedly held hostage and gang-raped in a cyber cafe here when they had gone to get some documents photocopied, police said on Monday.

    Four men took hostage of the two girl students at the cafe on September 13 and one of the accused also recorded the act, police said.

    The accused also extorted Rs 10,000 from the girls, threatening to circulate the video.

    Superintendent of Police Prashant Verma said a case was registered at Sadar Kotwali on Sunday against six people, including a woman, based on the complaint of one of the girls.

    The 17-year-old student in her complaint said she had gone to the cyber cafe along with her friend at noon on September 13 when four people, who were already present there, raped them.

    One of the accused also made a video of the act and handed it over to his brother-in-law who extorted Rs 10,000 by threatening to make it viral, police said.

    The girl said she and her friend stole money from their houses to give it to the accused, police said. It was the missing money which alerted their family members after which the incident came to light, they said.

    The girls have been sent to the district hospital for medical examination.

    Police are raiding all possible places, the SP said, adding in the initial investigation, the police have found signs of prostitution from the cafe.

    The victim had said that after the incident, the wife of one of the accused made her phone calls pressurising her into prostitution and some neighbours have also spoken about presence of young girls there, he added.

    The SP said efforts are on to nab the accused.

  • 17-year-old gang-raped in UP’s Muzaffarnagar, video shared on social media

    MUZAFFARNAGAR: A 17-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped by two men who recorded a video of the crime and shared it on social media, police said on Monday.

    The incident took place on Sunday in a village under Bhopa Police Station, SHO Subhash Babu said, adding a case was registered against the accused, Shubham and Ashish, who are absconding.

    According to complaint lodged by the victim’s mother, the accused lured the girl into a garden with guava trees on the pretext of offering her the fruit and instead gang-raped her.

    The incident came to light after the video of the crime was circulated on social media, police said.

    In a separate incident, a man was booked for allegedly trying to rape a woman in a village under Kotwali Police Station area.

    The accused, Bobby, tried to rape the woman who was in her field on Sunday.

    However, she raised an alarm and he fled, they said.
