  • Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray stays allotment of 100 flats in MHADA buildings to Tata cancer hospital

    By PTI
MUMBAI: Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has stayed the transfer of 100 MHADA flats here to the Tata Memorial Hospital for providing temporary accommodation to cancer patients undergoing treatment there.

State Housing Minister Jitendra Awhad on Wednesday confirmed the decision.

Shiv Sena MLA Ajay Chaudhary told reporters that the decision to stay the transfer order was taken after he complained to the CM about objections to it from local residents.

Notably, Awhad had taken the decision to allot 100 flats in buildings of the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) to the hospital.

The keys of the flats were handed over to the hospital authorities in May by NCP president Sharad Pawar, whose party shares power with the Shiv Sena and Congress in the state.

Chaudhary, who is an MLA from Sewri in Mumbai, said over 1,000 families living in the vicinity objected to the disturbance created by outsiders arriving there on a temporary basis.

“My repeated pleas to the housing minister to hear the grievances of locals went unheard. So, I had to petition the chief minister, he said.

Chaudhary said the MHADA can allot an entire building to the hospital, so that it is easy for the hospital authorities to maintain it.

But, the decision to allot flats for temporary accommodation in different buildings where people are already staying was not acceptable to locals, he said.

“We have no objection to tenements in transit camps being given to the hospital.

There are MHADA tenements in the Bandra-Kurla Complex.

One entire building can be given to the hospital, but not where locals are residing,” he said.

Chaudhary also said his wife succumbed to cancer four years ago, and he set up a trust in her name with his own money and is helping the needy cancer patients to get medical treatment.

“Nobody should tell me the agony of cancer patients as me and my family have undergone the trauma,” he said.

  • ‘Better to reconcile with BJP before it’s too late’: Sena MLA under ED scanner writes to Uddhav

    By PTI
MUMBAI: Shiv Sena MLA Pratap Sarnaik, who is under the Enforcement Directorate’s scanner for alleged money laundering, has written a letter to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray appealing to him to reconcile with the BJP “before it is too late”.

In the letter dated June 10, Sarnaik said even though the alliance with the BJP has broken, personal and harmonious relations between leaders of the ‘yuti’ (Shiv Sena-BJP) remain.

“It is better to reconcile before it is too late,” the MLA said in the letter.

Notably, the Sena forged an alliance with the NCP and Congress and formed the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in Maharashtra in 2019 after the Uddhav Thackeray-led party fell out with the BJP.

In November last year, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) raided premises linked to Sarnaik in Maharashtra in connection with a money laundering case being probed against a security service provider company and others.

The Shiv Sena had called the raids a “political vendetta” and said the Maharashtra government or its leaders will not surrender to pressure from anyone.

Noting that municipal corporation polls are due soon in several Maharashtra cities, including Mumbai, Sarnaik in his letter to the CM said, “I believe fighting a war like Arjun, instead of sacrificing oneself like Abhimanyu or Karna. This is the reason that I have been fighting my legal battle for the last seven months alone without getting any help from our leaders or our government .”

Sarnaik, who is an MLA from neighbouring Thane district, also alleged that the Congress and NCP were creating divisions in the Shiv Sena ranks.

“It is better to join hands with Prime Minister Narendra Modi again as Shiv Sainiks feel that would save the Sena leaders like me, Anil Parab and Ravindra Waikar from problems,” he said.

Notably, former BJP MP Kirit Somaiya had accused the three Sena leaders of indulging in corrupt practices.

Sarnaik, in his letter, did not name Somaiya, but said a leader “who has become a ‘former MP’ because of the Sena” is maligning the party.

Sarnaik also claimed that Shiv Sena MLAs feel only the work of Congress and NCP legislators is being done and not of those from his party.

“Shiv Sena MLAs wonder whether the MVA has been formed, by breaking the alliance with the BJP, to help the Congress and NCP grow,” he said.

Sarnaik also said in the letter that while CM Thackeray was focusing only on COVID-19 eradication, the Congress was talking of going alone in next elections and the NCP was busy “breaking” Shiv Sena workers and inducting them into the Sharad Pawar-led party.

Meanwhile, reacting to Sarnaik’s letter, Somaiya said the Sena MLA seems to be worried about jail now and so, he has asked CM Thackeray to join hands with PM Modi and the BJP.

“All corrupt leaders of the Shiv Sena – Pratap Sarnaik, Anil Parab, Ravindra Waikar – will have to be in jail,” the BJP leader said in a statement.

Somaiya also said he had lodged a complaint at a police station in Thane about Sarnaik “missing” for last 100 days.

  • Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray criticises Congress over ‘going solo’ remarks

    Express News Service
MUMBAI: Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray indirectly criticised Congress, while addressing his party workers on the 55th anniversary of Shiv Sena, saying that this is not the time to do politics, but help the state overcome the COVID-19 crisis.

This comes a day after Congress said that although it will support the Maha Vikas Aghadi government, of which it is a part, the party will not form poll pacts with Sena and NCP, the other two parties in the coalition government.

“If we talk of contesting elections solo now, people ridiculeus. Which party does not want to win a s ma ny seats as possible fight elections on its own? But this is not the time for such announcements,” Thackeray said.

Maharashtra Congress president Nana Patole has been talking about contesting elections on its own. NCP and Sena have said they will fight together.

Thackeray said every party should take pride in its work, but that should not hurt the self-esteem of others. “Every party has to expand, but we cannot do politics all the time,” Thackeray said. The Shiv Sena president also said Sena has self-respect and will not bow in front of anyone for power.

  • After Modi-Thackeray meet, Raut praises PM

    Express News Service
MUMBAI:  Prime Minister Narendra Modi meeting Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s in Delhi two days ago set the political circle abuzz of two old allies patching up after falling out in November, 2019.

Two days after the meeting, fierce critic of BJP and Modi, Shiv Sena Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut had a word of praise for the prime minister. Raut is close to Thackeray . “Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the top leader of the country and his party. BJP has been in power for the last seven years because of Narendra Modi,” Raut said on Thursday. He was quick to add, though, that not much should be read much in the meeting of Modi and Thackeray.

He said Thackeray was in Delhi with Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and Congress minister Ashok Chavan to resolve Maratha reservation and other issues. “We are politically not together with BJP but the personal equation between two leaders is intact. Politics and personal relations are different things,” he said. Shiv Sena ended its 30-year alliance with BJP in 2019 following disputes over sharing important positions in the ministry and equal numbers of ministers.

Sena claimed that BJP agreed to a 50:50 formula and later refused to honour that. Breaking away from the NDA, Thackeray criticised Devendra Fadnavis and Amit Shah for not keeping their word. But he did not say anything against Modi. With speculations of two old allies coming together doing the rounds, NCP chief Sharad Pawar on his party’s 22-year anniversary reminded Thackeray that his late father Balasaheb Thackeray had supported Indira Gandhi against Janta Party to keep his promise.

Pawar said NCP and Shiv Sena will not only survive five years in government, but they will also contest Lok Sabha and state Assembly elections together. “There are a lot of speculations and rumours about the Thackeray government lasting five years. However, we are not only confident about the survival of Maha Vikas Aghadi under the leadership of Uddhav Thackeray, but the NCP and Shiv Sena will also contest Lok Sabha and state elections together. This government is doing great work for the people,” he said.

Pawar said there is no need to pay attention to speculations after a separate one-on-one meeting between Modi and Thackeray. “I have been observing Sena for the last several years. Once Balasaheb had given his word to Indira Gandhi on not contesting elections and extending support to Congress. Babasaheb Thackeray did not change his word despite a lot of pressure and political stakes. Shiv Sena means trust,” said Pawar.

No threat to MVA, assures PawarSharad Pawar said there is nothing to worry about the government in Maharashtra. “People are happy with Maha Vikas Aghadi and its performance. No one talks about breaking the alliance,” said the NCP chief.

  • ‘MVA govt will complete full term’: Pawar ends speculations of Sena-BJP patch up

    By Agencies
MUMBAI: NCP president Sharad Pawar on Thursday said the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in Maharashtra will complete its full term and praised ally Shiv Sena, saying it is party which one can trust.

The remarks came against the backdrop of the one-on-one meeting between Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi on Tuesday and Pawar’s meeting with BJP leader and former CM Devendra Fadnavis last week.

Speaking on the 22nd foundation day of the NCP, Pawar also said the MVA (comprising the Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress) will do well in the next Assembly and Lok Sabha elections, indicating the three parties may contest the 2024 polls together.

He said doubts are being raised as to how long the state government will last. “But, the Shiv Sena is a party which can be trusted. The government will last its full term and also perform well in the next Lok Sabha and Assembly polls,” the NCP chief said.

“The Shiv Sena is a party you can trust. (Sena founder) Balasaheb Thackeray honoured his commitment to Indira Gandhi,” he said.

The Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress came together to form government in Maharashtra following the Assembly polls in 2019, after the Uddhav Thackeray-led party had a fallout with the BJP over the issue of sharing the chief ministerial post.

“We have formed a government comprising parties of different ideologies. We never thought we will one day form government with the Shiv Sena because we had never worked together. But, the experience is good as all the three parties are working well together during the COVID-19 pandemic,” Pawar said.

Sena MP Sanjay Raut said the MVA government, comprising the Sena, NCP and Congress, will complete its five-year tenure.

  • Nothing surprising if PM Modi and CM Thackeray met separately, says BJP leader Fadnavis

    By PTI
MUMBAI: Senior BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday said nothing was surprising if Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray met Prime Minister Narendra Modi separately in Delhi earlier in the day but added that he was not aware whether such interaction took place.

Earlier in the day, Thackeray, accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister and senior NCP leader Ajit Pawar and senior Congress leader Ashok Chavan, met the prime minister and discussed issues related to the Maratha reservation, pending GST compensation and the proposed Metro carshed in Kanjurmarg.

“Though I am not sure whether such one-on-one meeting took place between Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, there is nothing to get surprised even if we assume that such a meeting has taken place,” the Leader of Opposition told reporters.

Fadnavis said when he was chief minister of Maharashtra, the PM used to discuss various issues with him separately.

“When I used to meet the prime minister with a delegation, he used to talk with them for 5 to 10 minutes. The PM later used to discuss issues concerning the state with me separately for 15-20 minutes,” he said.

Fadnavis said he cannot speculate on the meeting between the PM and Thackeray, an estranged ally of the BJP, as he had no information about it.

The Shiv Sena, headed by Thackeray, walked out of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) after it fell out with the BJP over sharing the post of chief minister after the Maharashtra assembly elections threw up a hung verdict in October 2019.

The Sena then joined hands with the NCP and the Congress to form the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) which came to power in November 2019.

“Maharashtra has always been on the agenda of the Union government. The prime minister is always positive towards Maharashtra (and its issues),” Fadnavis said.

“I welcome such a meeting with the prime minister. They help in developing coordination between the Centre and the state. We have always maintained that the state should maintain good relations with Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” he said.

When asked about the meeting of the Thackeray-led delegation with the PM, Fadnavis said, “It is good that the chief minister met the prime minister with a delegation over various issues, as there is a precedent of pointing fingers at the Union government for every problem in Maharashtra”.

Queried about the chances of Thackeray and the PM setting aside their political differences, Fadnavis said, “Politics generally starts few months before the elections and one cannot stop it. On other days, coordination between the state and the Centre helps the state. If a proper role is played at right time, Maharashtra will benefit for sure”.

Commenting on the issue of the Maratha reservation, which was struck down by the Supreme Court, he said, “It would be premature to expect anything concrete out of today’s meeting”.

He said the Bhosale committee report has recommended the state to set up a backward commission and prepare a report.

“The state has to submit a report and take further action. But, meeting on such issues is also good”.

  • Uddhav Thackeray will meet PM Modi today, will a new script be written?

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday. But before this meeting, many speculations have intensified whether CM Thackeray will talk to Prime Minister Modi only about Corona or whether the purpose of their meeting will be the ongoing politics regarding Maratha reservation in Maharashtra. Earlier on Monday, while giving information to the media, Maharashtra Home Minister Dilip Walse Patil said that a delegation led by CM Thackeray and Deputy CM Ajit Pawar will meet PM Modi in Delhi on Tuesday. At the same time, during this meeting, discussions will be held regarding Maratha reservation, OBC reservation and relief from cyclonic storm.

Let us inform that the second wave of Corona had caused the most devastation in Maharashtra, after which now after two months of curfew in most parts of the state, relaxation has been given in some districts from Monday.
