  • ‘Never said entire UK is racist’: Comedian Trevor Noah after Rishi Sunak row

    By PTI

LONDON: Noted comedian and television host Trevor Noah has defended himself following a row over his comments on the appointment of Britain’s new premier, saying he never said “the entire UK is racist” and was only responding to those who do not want Rishi Sunak in that role.

Sunak, Britain’s first Indian-origin Prime Minister, took office on Tuesday. A former investment banker-turned-politician, Sunak, 42, is the youngest British prime minister in 210 years. He is also Britain’s first Hindu Prime Minister.

On the US news programme The Daily Show earlier this week, Noah said there had been a “backlash” over Sunak.

His comments were criticised in the UK, with many including ex-chancellor and Pakistani-origin Conservative Party leader, Sajid Javid calling Noah “simply wrong”. But Noah, 38, has now defended his segment, saying he was reacting to racists, and: “That’s why I said. ‘Some people’,” the BBC reported.

In the original comments on the US programme, Noah – who is South African and grew up during apartheid – said: “You hear a lot of the people saying ‘Oh, they’re taking over, now the Indians are going to take over Great Britain and what’s next?’ “And I always find myself going ‘So what? What are you afraid of? I think it’s because the quiet part that a lot of people don’t realise what they’re saying is, ‘We don’t want these people who were previously oppressed to get into power because then they may do to us what we did to them.

“During his skit, Noah played a clip from radio station LBC during the latest Conservative leadership race a week ago, when a caller falsely claimed Sunak was not even British,” the report said.

Javid tweeted in response that the comments from the comedian were ‘so wrong’ and that Britain “is the most successful multiracial democracy on earth and proud of this historic achievement”.

Presenter Piers Morgan also tweeted that the US media was “falsely portraying Britain as a racist country”.

Noah finally responded on Friday evening, saying: “C’mon Piers, you’re smarter than that.

“I wasn’t saying “The entire UK is racist”, I was responding to the racists who don’t want Rishi as PM because of his race. That’s why I said, “Some people.”

Noah has long spoken about racial equality, publishing a book in 2017 titled Born a Crime, a reference to the fact he was born in South Africa to a white Swiss father and a black Xhosa mother, at a time when such a relationship was punishable by imprisonment.

He began his career in South Africa, releasing a string of stand-up specials and hosting a late-night talk show before relocating to the US in 2011.

He has hosted The Daily Show – a late-night talk and satirical news programme – since 2015 but last month announced he would be standing down.

Sunak was born in Hampshire, south-east England, to Indian parents – a pharmacist mother and a general practitioner (GP) father – and is married to Akshata Murty, with whom he has two young daughters.

  • Trevor Noah’s ‘Daily Show’ departure set to be in December

    By ANI

WASHINGTON: Comedian Trevor Noah’s days as the host of Comedy Central’s ‘The Daily Show’ are numbered as he is set to depart from it in December following a seven-year run.

According to Variety, Noah will depart after a final appearance on the program on December 8.

The timeline gives Noah a chance to anchor the program as its cast makes its way to Atlanta for a midterm-election special, and to look back at his tenure on the series.

Comedy Central will place the show on hiatus after Noah’s farewell, and plans to bring it back on January 17 as part of what the network called a “reinvention.”

A successor for Noah has not been announced, but the network is believed to be considering some of the show’s correspondents as part of its deliberations, reported Variety.

Noah, who came out of near anonymity to take over the program from Jon Stewart in 2015, stunned Comedy Central and Paramount executives in late September when he announced that he would leave the show.

Sources say that staffers with the show and higher up at the conglomerate didn’t find this out until Noah’s announcement.

In June, Noah extended his option to remain at the centre of ‘The Daily Show’ for another two years.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, sources note he also had an option for another year that would have taken him through the 2024-25 season. That made Noah’s decision to leave an additional surprise for everyone at Paramount and with ‘The Daily Show.’

    By AFP

NEW YORK: The Daily Show host Trevor Noah will leave the satirical news program after seven years, he said Thursday, giving no timetable for his exit.

“My time is up,” the 38-year-old said in video on the show’s Twitter account.

The South African comedian said he missed traveling after being grounded by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I spent two years in my apartment, not on the road,” he said. “I realized there’s another part of my life that I want to carry on exploring.”

The show rose to prominence under former host Jon Stewart, who hosted the show for 16 years before leaving in 2015.

It came as a surprise to many when relatively unknown Noah was announced as Stewart’s replacement.

There have been no indications of who will take over from Noah.

“With no timetable for his departure, we’re working together on next steps,” said Paramount Global cable network, which owns the Comedy Central show, in a statement to US media.

Noah detailed his upbringing in apartheid-era South Africa as the son of a black South African mother and a white Swiss-German father in “Born a Crime, his 2016 best-selling memoir.

“I’ve loved hosting this show, it’s been one of my greatest challenges and one of my greatest joys,” Noah said.

  • Television host Trevor Noah, actress Minka Kelly part ways

    By ANI
WASHINGTON: South African comedian and television host Trevor Noah and American actor Minka Kelly have reportedly separated, only a short time after he splashed out eight figures on a massive Bel Air mansion.

Page Six cited a source to People magazine who confirmed on Sunday that the ‘Daily Show’host Friday Night Lights’ actor parted ways after first being linked last August.

While the private couple for the most part avoided the spotlight and never at any point publicly affirmed their relationship – the stars praised his 37th birthday celebration together in February. However, the two praised the commemorated in an extremely low-key way: by grabbing takeout from In-N-Out Burger in Los Angeles.

Per Page Six, the 40-year-old actor was additionally seen with a smattering of balloons for her beau’s big day.

In January, Noah allegedly purchased a six-room home for the couple – regardless of his past statement that he’d never live with a girlfriend (in spite of the fact that he said he wasn’t against marriage).

A source revealed to People magazine at the hour of the buy, “They’re making plans for a future together, and it’s an entirely steady relationship. They’ve been investing energy between coasts throughout the most recent year and had been searching for a spot in LA as a team.”

Kelly’s previous boyfriends include Jesse Williams, Derek Jeter, Chris Evans and Wilmer Valderrama. Noah was recently connected to girlfriend Jordyn Taylor in 2017.

  • Trevor Noah joins list of international celebrities to shine spotlight on Indian farmers’ protest

    By PTI
MUMBAI: Stand-up comic and late night show host Trevor Noah is the latest international personality from the entertainment industry to highlight the ongoing farmers agitation.

Through his popular TV programme “The Daily Show”, the Emmy-winning presenter on Wednesday night explained the origins of the farmers’ protest, their demands and the subsequent global support the agitation has received.

On February 2, a tweet by pop star Rihanna triggered a wave of support for the protesting farmers by a number of global personalities, activists and politicians.

ALSO READ | Lilly Singh, Jay Sean, other celebrities join Rihanna in extending support to farmers’ protest in India

“Why are India’s farmers protesting? The government tried to change the decades-old agriculture laws and that’s when the manure hit the fan,” Noah tweeted, along with the video link.

In the show’s segment ‘If you don’t know, now you know’, which ran over eight minutes, the 36-year-old South African comic pieced together news clippings to provide a holistic view of the protest.

The video clip also mentioned the burning of effigies of Rihanna and Swedish teen climate activist Greta Thunberg, who had voiced her support.

Thousands of farmers have been camping at Delhi’s borders since November demanding the repeal of three new agriculture laws that they say will end the minimum support price (MSP) based procurement of crops like wheat and paddy by the government and usher in big corporates into the farm sector.

They have rejected the government’s offer to suspend the reforms for 18 months and have not joined talks after 11 rounds of talks ended last month.

Noah, who delivers satirical news related to the international and American political matters in an entertaining way on “The Daily Show”, said the government has decided that they’ve had “enough” of the protest because this is “a major crackdown”.

“Maybe they think postponing the law will satisfy the farmers. But think about it. In 18 months, people will be in the same position that they are in now. And the protests will happen all over again.

“But this crackdown shows you how worried the government must be about the protest. And honestly, they should be, because it’s clear that these farmers are digging in for the long haul,” Noah said in the video.

Meena Harris, an American lawyer and niece of US Vice President Kamala Harris, Hollywood veteran Susan Sarandon, actors John Cusack, Amanda Cerni, singers Jay Sean, Dr Zeus and former adult star Mia Khalifa have also lent their support to the protesting farmers.

The government had criticised the tweets by Rihanna and other international celebrities, saying facts must be ascertained before people rushing to comment on the issue, calling it “neither accurate nor responsible”.
