    Dhaka: Four people died after an intercity Benapole Express train caught fire in Bangladesh’s Gopibagh, as reported by the Dhaka Tribune. Dhaka Tribune reported that the incident took place around 9.05 pm on Friday and at least five compartments of the train have been set ablaze by “miscreants”. However, the victims could not be identified yet.

    Reportedly, seven firefighting units were brought in to control the fire, according to the duty officer of the Fire Service and Civil Defence, Rakibul Hasan. Following the incident, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Additional Commissioner (Crime and Operations) Mahid Uddin alleged that the Benapole Express train fire was a “planned attack”.

    The incident happened just two days ahead of Bangladesh’s general elections. “We cannot say for sure who carried out the arson attack but it is sabotage for sure,” he said. The official added that those who carried out the attack will be brought under the law. “Such behavior towards common people, children and women are inhumane.”

    He further said that the people who committed the crime might have disguised themselves as passengers, as reported by the Dhaka Tribune. Moreover, Ashraf Hossain, sub-inspector of Dhaka Railway Police Station, said that they received a fire report from the emergency service number around 9:07 pm. However, police officials are still fearing that people could be trapped inside the train, Dhaka Tribune reported.

  • Railway safety commissioner to hold statutory inquiry into Madurai train fire

    CHENNAI: The Southern Railway on Saturday announced it will hold a statutory inquiry on August 27 regarding the fire in a railway coach in Madurai, which left nine people dead.

    A M Chowdhary, Commissioner of Railway Safety, Southern Circle, Bengaluru, will hold the inquiry on Sunday at the DRM’s conference Hall, Divisional Railway Manager’s office Complex, Madurai.

    “Any member of the public having knowledge about the incident and desiring to give evidence may do so at the Madurai inquiry or write to the Commissioner of Railway Safety, Southern Circle,” an official release here said.

    At least nine pilgrims bound for Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu met with a tragic end when a fire broke out inside a stationary train compartment at the Madurai railway station in the small hours of Saturday, the Southern Railway said.

    They also said that a gas cylinder “illegally” taken inside the coach led to the blaze.

  • Delhi-bound Ranchi Rajdhani Express delayed by 25 minutes as sparks spotted in the wheels

    RANCHI: The Delhi-bound  Rajdhani Express from Ranchi was delayed for 25 minutes after a fire was spotted in its wheel at Gangaghat Station on Monday. 

    Senior Railway officials, however, claimed that it was a technical fault that was taken care of by the onboard railway staff.

    According to Chief Public Relations Officer Neeraj Kumar, the train moved further only after the fault was rectified by on-board railway staff.

    “There was some fault in the spring near the wheel of one of the compartments due to which some sparks were spotted by some people. The train was stopped near Gangaghat station which was rectified by the onboard railway staff,” said the CPRO.

    The train proceeded further only after taking care of the fault, he added.

    The CPRO further added that the entire process delayed the train by 25 minutes. The inquiry will be done to look into the actual cause of the spark, he said.
