Teeja, a significant festival for married women in Chhattisgarh, will be celebrated on August 26, 2025. The auspicious Tritiya Tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada begins on August 25 at 12:34 PM and ends on August 26 at 1:54 PM. Since the date coinciding with sunrise is given importance, the Teeja festival will be observed on August 26. The auspicious time for worship on August 26 will be from 5:56 AM to 8:31 AM, a window of two hours and 35 minutes. This festival, also known as Hartalika Teej in other parts of the country, is deeply rooted in the devotion of women to Goddess Parvati, who observed a fast to attain Lord Shiva as her husband. Preparations for the festival have already commenced in homes. Married daughters are invited by their parents to their maternal homes with great respect, a tradition observed in every household. Women are arriving at their maternal homes to celebrate Teeja. A day before the festival, a dish called ‘Kadu Bhat’ (bitter rice) is consumed, marking the beginning of a waterless fast that lasts for about 40 hours. During this fast, women pray for the long life and prosperity of their husbands and families. The atmosphere is filled with devotion as families engage in bhajans and kirtans throughout the night. The fast is concluded on Ganesh Chaturthi, after offering prayers to Lord Ganesha and Shiva-Parvati and consuming prasad. After celebrating Teeja, married women return to their marital homes. Women create idols of Shiva and Parvati using sand or clay, perform rituals, and seek blessings for their husbands’ long life. It is believed that observing the Hartalika Teej fast strengthens love in married life and removes any bitterness in relationships. On the day of Hartalika Teej, women wake up early, take a bath, and set up a puja sthal (worship place). They install idols of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, and Lord Ganesha. After worshiping Lord Ganesha, they perform puja of Goddess Parvati, offering her 16 adornments, fruits, flowers, and sweets. The Hartalika Teej fast story is narrated. The fast is concluded on the Chaturthi Tithi, on August 27, after offering water and prasad after sunrise.

The traditional Hareli festival, infused with the essence of Chhattisgarhi folk life, commenced on Thursday, July 24th, at the residence of Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai. Chhattisgarh, a state where special traditional tools and objects are used for every occasion and activity, showcased its rich cultural heritage during the Hareli festival. The Chief Minister’s residence displayed traditional agricultural tools and attire, representing the state’s vibrant cultural legacy.

Among the displayed items were the ‘Katha,’ two round wooden structures used for measuring paddy before the advent of weighing scales. One ‘Katha’ typically held about four kilograms of paddy, and it was used for measuring and paying wages. Also showcased was the ‘Khumri,’ a circular head covering made of thin bamboo strips, dyed pink, and adorned with cowrie shells. This was traditionally worn by cowherds to protect their heads from sun and rain. Cowherds also carried a ‘Kamra,’ a thick blanket-like garment made of jute fibers, used as a raincoat. The ‘Kasi Ki Dori,’ a rope made from the stem of the ‘Kasi’ plant, was also on display. It was used as ‘Nivar’ to weave cots or charpoys. The process of making the rope is known as ‘Dori Aantna.’ ‘Jhanpi,’ a large, round, lidded wooden structure, served as an alternative to bags or trunks in ancient Chhattisgarh. It was particularly used during wedding ceremonies to store the groom’s clothes, accessories, and food items. Finally, the ‘Kalari,’ a pointed iron hook attached to the end of a bamboo stick, was displayed. It was used for turning and flipping paddy during the threshing process.

Chhattisgarh, a state in India, celebrates the Hareli festival as the first traditional folk festival of the year. Observed during the Krishna Paksha Amavasya of the Shravan month, Hareli holds great importance for farmers and all Chhattisgarh residents. It symbolizes the beginning of the sowing season and is a celebration of nature and agriculture. Farmers conduct their farming activities like plowing, sowing, and transplanting before the festival. The festival strengthens the bond between people and their land.

Hareli highlights the deep connection between humans and nature, emphasizing gratitude for the land and tools that sustain life. The festival is marked by traditional rituals and customs, including the worship of agricultural tools like the plow, hoe, and spade, which are cleaned and placed in the courtyard for worship. The farmers also worship their family deities. Women prepare traditional dishes like ‘cheela,’ a sweet pancake made from rice flour, which is offered to the deities. The festival also involves children enjoying ‘Gendi,’ a traditional game played on bamboo stilts, along with various sports competitions.
