Amid swirling controversies over tariffs and presidential rhetoric, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor has reaffirmed New Delhi’s status as Washington’s most critical partner. Speaking in the capital, he provided fresh insights into stalled trade negotiations and exciting new collaborative frontiers.

Tensions have simmered since 2025, with US proposals for punitive tariffs on countries buying Russian oil, including India. Trump’s outspoken comments have at times irked Indian audiences. Yet Gor emphasized resilience: ‘No partner is more important than India.’

Trade discussions, active but unresolved, restart January 13. ‘Both sides are actively engaged,’ Gor said. He acknowledged the challenges of dealing with ‘the world’s biggest democracy’ but vowed determination. Trade matters, but so do joint efforts in defense, anti-terror ops, energy security, tech innovation, academics, and public health.

Praising the Modi-Trump bond, Gor shared, ‘Their friendship is real – not just transactional.’ Partners can disagree, he added, but they always reconcile.

Gor spotlighted PaxSilica, America’s new flagship project for a resilient supply chain in vital minerals, energy inputs, semiconductors, AI development, advanced manufacturing, and logistics. With members like Japan, South Korea, Britain, and Israel already onboard, India’s full membership invitation for next month marks a strategic win.

Looking ahead, Gor outlined his mission to execute a grand agenda through true strategic alliance. This approach, leveraging mutual strengths, respect, and leadership, could redefine Indo-US relations for years, turning potential flashpoints into opportunities for shared prosperity.

Former US President Donald Trump has expressed intentions to visit India next year, describing Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “great friend” and a “great man.” Speaking to reporters, Trump stated that his discussions with PM Modi regarding trade have been progressing “great.” He also highlighted that India, under Modi’s leadership, has significantly reduced its oil purchases from Russia. Trump mentioned that he and PM Modi maintain regular contact and that the Indian Prime Minister has invited him to visit the country. While no specific dates were confirmed, Trump indicated a visit is likely, recalling a “great trip” he previously had in India. This potential visit comes as India prepares to host the next Quad summit in New Delhi, an event that brings together leaders from India, the United States, Japan, and Australia. Trump also reiterated his past claims about using trade tariffs to de-escalate conflicts, citing the India-Pakistan situation as an example where he believes tariffs helped avert a larger confrontation.

President Donald Trump indicated a potential easing of recent trade tensions with Canada following a dinner meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney at the APEC Summit. This comes just days…

President Donald Trump indicated a potential easing of recent trade tensions with Canada following a dinner meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney at the APEC Summit. This comes just days after Trump announced the suspension of trade talks, citing what he called ‘fake propaganda’ by Canada. The dispute centers on an advertisement featuring former President Ronald Reagan, which the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation claims Canada used selectively to oppose U.S. tariffs.

Trump described his conversation with Prime Minister Carney as ‘very nice,’ offering a glimmer of hope for improved relations. The controversy ignited when the Reagan Foundation accused Canada of employing deceptive tactics, utilizing edited video and audio of the former president in an anti-tariff campaign. Trump viewed this as ‘egregious behavior’ and an attempt to influence U.S. court decisions.

Previously, Trump had taken to social media to announce the halt in negotiations. He stated, ‘Based on their egregious behavior, ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE HEREBY TERMINATED.’ He further elaborated that the advertisement was a ‘FRAUD’ and that Canada knowingly let it run despite requests for its removal. In addition to halting talks, Trump had also announced a further 10% tariff increase on Canadian goods, asserting that tariffs are crucial for U.S. national security and the economy.

The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation has also voiced its disapproval, confirming they are exploring legal avenues regarding the advertisement. The foundation reiterated that legal options are being considered to address the use of Reagan’s image and words.

Discussions regarding trade are resuming between India and the United States, yet a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former US President Donald Trump remains uncertain. The possibility is complicated by recent actions, including US tariffs on Indian exports and an increase in H1-B visa fees. Amidst the backdrop of these issues, officials from both countries met in New York to explore the possibility of a Modi-Trump meeting, potentially on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit in Malaysia. The US move to hike visa fees to $100,000 per application is seen as a way to boost local American jobs. However, some experts question whether this move will be effective, considering the skills gap that necessitated the use of foreign workers in the first place. Strategic analysts suggest that a meeting between the leaders would require substantial preparation and tangible outcomes to be worthwhile, such as a rollback of tariffs on Indian goods. Discussions are ongoing to resolve trade disputes, with hopes for a recovery in Indo-US relations during the remainder of Trump’s presidency. Shashi Tharoor, a senior Congress leader, sounded hopeful about Indo-US relations and questioned the silence of NRIs in America, on issues affecting them and their country.

India and the United States are resuming face-to-face trade talks in New Delhi today. This marks the first such meeting following the imposition of punitive tariffs by the US on India concerning its purchase of Russian oil. A high-level US trade delegation, led by Brendan Lynch, the Assistant US Trade Representative for South and Central Asia, will meet with Indian officials in what is considered a crucial meeting to chart the future of trade negotiations. The US trade team was initially scheduled to arrive in India from August 25-29 for the sixth round of talks on a bilateral trade agreement, but this was postponed due to Washington’s imposition of a 50% tariff on India, including a 25% punitive duty on oil purchases from Russia. Since then, both sides have been holding virtual meetings on a weekly basis. The Indian officials will include Rajesh Agrawal, Special Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce, and other senior officials. Officials from the Ministry of Finance and Corporate Affairs will also be present at the meeting.
