In a gesture symbolizing deepening economic bonds, India’s Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal greeted New Zealand’s Todd McClay in New Delhi on Friday. The visit precedes the eagerly awaited India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement signing on April 27, 2026, poised to reshape trade dynamics between the two nations.

Taking to X, Goyal expressed delight at hosting McClay, noting the visit as a testament to mutual confidence and aligned economic aspirations. This prelude to the FTA underscores years of diplomatic efforts aimed at unlocking untapped potential.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon of New Zealand has championed the pact, predicting substantial gains. He revealed plans to ink the deal on Monday via X, elaborating in a video on benefits for exporters. Marine jet system manufacturers, key players in global exports to more than 70 countries, will particularly benefit from enhanced Indian market access.

The FTA targets tariff eliminations and regulatory hurdles, easing the path for goods movement. Current high tariffs on New Zealand products into India will taper off gradually, enhancing competitiveness and volume. Luxon forecasts this will fuel economic expansion, generating employment and better paychecks back home.

Looking ahead, the agreement could double trade volumes within years, injecting vitality into sectors like dairy, technology, and services. For India, it offers diversified import sources and investment inflows, while New Zealand gains a massive consumer base. This strategic alliance promises long-term stability amid global uncertainties.
