interview| Miles Teller on ‘Top Gun: Maverick’: Was nervous to lend myself to this world.
By PTI
NEW DELHI: Actor Miles Teller says he was nervous to be a part of “Top Gun: Maverick” as he had “big shoes” to fill when superstar Tom Cruise picked him up to play the son of a beloved character in the franchise.
“Maverick” is a much-awaited follow-up to the 1986 blockbuster “Top Gun”, which changed Cruise’s life and career, making him an overnight Hollywood heartthrob for his performance as suave and daring US Navy aviator Pete “Maverick” Mitchell.
The sequel features Teller, known for some of the recent hits like “The Spectacular Now”, “Whiplash”, “Bleed for This” and “Only The Brave”, as Lieutenant Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, the son of Maverick’s late best friend Nick “Goose” Bradshaw, a character that was played by Anthony Edwards in the original.
Teller, 35, said he was “apprehensive” about joining the sequel, which was mounted on a big scale as he has always focused on doing “smaller-scale things” in his career.
“I was a little apprehensive about stepping into something that was kind of set up to be this huge thing. I’ve been in a couple of big movies, but for the most part I’ve tended to do some smaller-scale things. So, I was nervous about kind of lending myself to that world, but it’s something that I also was just incredibly proud and really honored to be a part of.”
“I mean, when Tom Cruise handpicks you to be his co-star in a movie and to play the son of Goose, those are big shoes to fill. So I just felt like if Tom thinks I’m the right guy, then I think I’m the right guy too,” Teller told PTI in a Zoom interview.
The action spectacle is set over 30 years after the events of Tony Scott-directed “Top Gun” and sees Maverick training a group of Top Gun graduates, including Rooster, for a specialized mission.
Teller said he was inspired by the superstar’s “work ethic” and relentless pursuit of achieving perfection. “Tom just never stops working and he’s never really even satisfied with good or great. He puts so much time into these movies that you see him in. And so his work ethic was something that I found really inspiring,” he added.
For Teller, “Top Gun: Maverick” is yet another movie where he could push the envelope with his character, something that he previously did in movies like “Whiplash”, “Bleed for This” and “Only The Brave”.
“I think in my life I’m pretty chill. So, these movies and certain performances, give me an opportunity to kind of go to the extreme that you’re not able to go to in life. You’re able to do some things through these scenes that if you were to do in real life, people would say, ‘Oh my God! This guy is so dramatic or this guy is too intense’.”
“So I do tend to gravitate towards those roles. I love when the stakes are high, I really enjoy movies that aren’t afraid to kind of push the envelope a little bit,” Teller added.
Directed by Joseph Kosinski, “Top Gun: Maverick” is produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, Tom Cruise, Christopher McQuarrie and David Ellison.
The film also features Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Charles Parnell, Bashir Salahuddin, Monica Barbaro, Jay Ellis, Danny Ramirez, Greg Tarzan Davis with Ed Harris and Val Kilmer.
The Paramount Pictures movie is exclusively distributed in India by Viacom18 Studios and will release in theatres on May 27.

‘Top Gun: Maverick’ to screen at Cannes Film Festival 2022
By PTI
LOS ANGELES: Tom Cruise-starrer “Top Gun: Maverick” will be screened at the 2022 edition of the Cannes Film Festival. Festival sources told The Hollywood Reporter, the much-awaited action spectacle will open at Cannes in advance of its Memorial Day premiere in theatres.
Cannes, however, would not serve as the film’s world premiere, which will be held in San Diego, where the first film was set. This would mark the first time in 30 years a Cruise film has screened at Cannes, with the Ron Howard-directed “Far and Away” showing at the movie gala in 1992.
“Maverick”, a follow-up to the 1986 blockbuster “Top Gun” also starring Cruise, will have its North American premiere on May 27. Paramount and Skydance declined to comment on the festival screening of the movie, directed by Cruise’s “Oblivion” director Joseph Kosinski.
“Maverick” also stars Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Danny Ramirez, Monica Barbaro, Ed Harris and Val Kilmer, returning as Iceman. The film has been delayed multiple times due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Maverick” launched its first trailer at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019. In August 2021, the first 13 minutes of the movie were screened at CinemaCon. Cannes Film Festival will be held from May 17-28.

Paramount postpones sequels of ‘Top Gun’, ‘Mission: Impossible’ amid surge in Covid cases
By PTI
LOS ANGELES: Studio Paramount Pictures has decided to push back the release of two of its most anticipated titles “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Mission: Impossible 7”, both headlined by Hollywood star Tom Cruise, given the current conditions of the coronavirus pandemic and its Delta variant around the world.
According to a report in Deadline, the film studio went ahead with the calendar shuffle after they consulted with experts and their own global team.
The development comes days after the studio successfully launched the clips and footage of the two films at CinemaCon 2021.
“Top Gun: Maverick” will now be released on May 27, 2022, the Memorial Day weekend.
The long-awaited sequel of the 1986 hit action drama was earlier scheduled on the pre-Thanksgiving weekend of November 19, 2021.
“Mission: Impossible 7”, which was supposed to be released on the Memorial Day weekend next year, will now premiere on September 30, 2022.
Co-produced with Skydance, these two films are part of big potential billion dollar grossing franchises which require a free run at the theatres, something which is not possible as cases continue to surge across the globe.
Recently, Paramount moved “Clifford The Big Red Dog” out of the release line-up later this year and will re-date some time in the future.
In addition, the studio’s “Jackass Forever” will open on February 4, 2022 instead of October 22 this year.
Paramount will next release their first big feature the reboot of “Scream”, produced by Spyglass Dimension, on January 14, 2022, leaving the rest of 2021 without any releases.

Tom Cruise’s ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, ‘Mission: Impossible 7’ delayed due to COVID-19 concerns
By ANI
WASHINGTON: Hollywood star Tom Cruise’s next two highly-anticipated movies ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ and ‘Mission: Impossible 7’ are being delayed again due to COVID-19 concerns.
As per Variety, Paramount has delayed its tentpoles amid a surge in the Delta variant of COVID-19.
‘Top Gun: Maverick’ will now open in theatres on May 27, 2022, instead of November 19, 2021, while the other Cruise-led adventure, ‘Mission: Impossible 7’, will release on September 30, 2022, instead of May 27, 2022.
‘Mission: Impossible – Fallout’ filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie has directed the seventh installment of the franchise. Joseph Kosinski has helmed ‘Top Gun: Maverick’.
‘Top Gun: Maverick’ was originally set for a June 24, 2020 opening but was shifted back to December 23, 2020, due to the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. It later had release dates set for July 2, 2021, and, most recently, November 19, 2021.
On the other hand, ‘Mission: Impossible 7’ was first delayed from July 23, 2021, to November 19 before ‘Maverick’ took over that spot and pushed it to May 27, 2022. It now lands four months after Maverick’s premiere.
But worry not as there are still several promising titles on the calendar through the end of the year, assuming rival studios keep their biggest movies on the schedule.
In the fall, Universal’s musical adaptation of ‘Dear Evan Hansen’ is opening on September 24, MGM’s James Bond sequel ‘No Time to Die’ is launching on October 8 and Sony’s ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’ is debuting on October 15.
Later in 2021, Disney and Marvel’s ‘Eternals’ is dated for November 5, Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of ‘West Side Story’ is scheduled for December 10 and Warner Bros.’ ‘The Matrix 4’ is slated for December 22.
