  • The Weeknd to star in film he co-wrote, produced opposite Jenna Ortega

    By IANS

LOS ANGELES: Musician ‘The Weeknd’, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye will have his first starring role in a feature film that he wrote and is also producing.

The picture, which is currently untitled and has been kept shrouded in mystery regarding its plot, genre and the like is being directed by Trey Edward Shults, the filmmaker behind ‘Waves’ and ‘It Comes at Night’.

Shults also co-wrote the movie and is executive-producing it. We do know that it is shooting in Los Angeles, but aside from that the “logline is being kept under wraps,” reports Variety.

Whether comedy or tragedy, action-adventure or musical extravaganza, this impressively vague feature has lined up a top-shelf cast.

Beyond The Weeknd, a Grammy-winning recording juggernaut, the film also stars Jenna Ortega, the star of ‘Wednesday’ and ‘Scream VI’, as well as Barry Keoghan, the Oscar-nominated actor from ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ and ‘The Killing of a Sacred Deer’.

The film will also be produced by Tesfaye’s producing partner Reza Fahim, who is also a co-writer, as well as Kevin Turen and Harrison Kreiss.

Chayse Irvin will handle the cinematography, while composer and producer OPN will be scoring the film alongside The Weeknd.

OPN has previously done the scores for ‘Good Time’ and ‘Uncut Gems’, in which The Weeknd had a cameo role as himself.

The Weeknd will also star in the hotly anticipated HBO series ‘The Idol’, co-created with Euphoria’s Sam Levinson and Fahim.

The Canadian singer, The Weeknd, will compose a soundtrack for James Cameron’s much-anticipated sequel Avatar: The Way of Water.

According to Variety, the Canadian singer recently uploaded a short clip displaying the film’s logo and December 16 release date.

In the background, a choir can be heard, supported by a booming drum beat—reminiscent of the previous film’s grandiose James Horner score. Following that, the official account of the upcoming film retweeted the post on Twitter.

Jon Landau, the film’s producer, who also posted the clip, wrote, “As the Na’vi (the fictional language of the film) say, ‘Zola’u niprrte’ soaiane Avatar’a Welcome to the Avatar family (sic).”

According to Variety, it remains unclear what the extent of the Weeknd’s involvement will be in the film or the soundtrack.

The Weeknd recently featured on Metro Boomin’s newest record, which also featured performances by A$AP Rocky, Travis Scott, Future and the late Takeoff. Earlier this year, he released Dawn FM, which followed 2020’s chart-topping After Hours.

Avatar: The Way of Water, the sequel to the 2009 blockbuster, is set more than a decade after the story of the first film ends. It follows Jake and Neyitiri as they build their family and battle their past, which seems to be catching up with them. Starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, and Kate Winslet, the film releases on December 16.

  • Drake and The Weeknd continue to boycott the Grammys

    By ANI

WASHINGTON: Drake and The Weeknd have decided to skip the 2023 Grammy Awards, making this the second consecutive year that both Canadian singers have opted out, according to a Vibe report shared by Page Six.

Page Six quoted a Vibe report that stated that the two musicians, who have worked together for more than a decade, have already expressed their displeasure with the behind-the-scenes working Recording Academy, the body that oversees the Grammy Awards, which are widely regarded as the highest honour in the music business, on different occasions.

The “Save Your Tears” singer reportedly took aim at the Recording Academy’s opaque voting method in a March 2021 statement to the New York Times, saying, “Because of the secret committees, I will no longer allow my label to submit my music to the Grammys.”

According to Page Six, The Weeknd, also vented to Billboard in an interview that was published earlier that year, in January 2021.

“Look, I personally don’t care anymore. I have three Grammys, which mean nothing to me now, obviously,” he told the music magazine. “I suck at giving speeches anyways. Forget awards shows.”

Page Six further quoted The Weeknd’s interview with Billboard magazine, “Of his initial shock at the snub, the 32-year-old musician added, “I use a sucker punch as an analogy. Because it just kind of hit me out of nowhere. I definitely felt … I felt things. I don’t know if it was sadness or anger. I think it was just confusion. I just wanted answers. Like, ‘What happened?’”

According to Page Six, Drake has had a falling out with the Grammys since the 2017 event, when he couldn’t help but notice how his catchy pop/R&B hit “Hotline Bling” had only received nods for Best Rap/Sung Performance and Best Rap Song.

The 35-year-old voiced concern over how the Grammys seemed to have pigeonholed the single despite winning both categories.

Drake said on the OVO Sound radio show the day after the 2017 event, “Even though ‘Hotline Bling’ is not a rap song, the only category they can manage to fit me in is a rap category. Maybe it’s because I’ve rapped in the past or because I’m black,” reported Page Six.

“I love the rap world and I love the rap community, but you’re right. I write pop songs for a reason,” he continued. “I wanna be like Michael Jackson. I wanna be like artists that I’ve looked up to. Those are pop songs, but I never get any credit for that…I won two awards last night, but I don’t even want them, because it feels weird for some reason,” he added.

  • Aaliyah’s ‘Poison’ collab with The Weeknd is finally here

    By Online Desk

Aaliyah and The Weeknd bring fans their long-awaited collab album ‘Poison,’ which was released on Friday. The release comes after much of Aaliyah’s music arrived to streaming services for the first time.

Blackground Records 2.0 and EMPIRE has released the album from the singer amid the world awaiting Unstoppable, Aaliyah’s first posthumous album.

Barry Hankerson, Blackground founder and Aaliyah’s uncle, told Billboard earlier this year that the new album would feature The Weeknd.

Much of Aaliyah’s music has been left off DSPs for more than a decade following her death in a plane accident on Aug. 25, 2001, when she was only 22 years old.

In the Billboard interview, Hankerson hinted that The Weeknd wouldn’t be the only superstar featured on the upcoming album of new Aaliyah music, since he name-dropped Drake, Future, Ne-Yo, Chris Brown and Snoop Dogg.

The Weeknd previously sampled Aaliyah’s 2001 Billboard Hot 100 top 20 hit “Rock the Boat” on “What You Need” from his 2012 compilation album Trilogy.

    By Associated Press

LOS ANGELES: The Recording Academy will announce nominees for its 64th Grammy Awards on Tuesday morning, but it’ll be the first year selections have been made after some sweeping changes.

The academy earlier this year ditched anonymous selection committees and now allows its more than 11,000 voters to choose nominees in certain categories, with the full membership eligible to weigh in on top honors like album and song of the year.

The shift comes after The Weeknd called the Grammys “corrupt” after he was shut out of 2021′s ceremony, despite having last year’s biggest song.

This year’s announcement will be made on a livestream beginning at noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific at https://live.grammy.com/.

Possible nominees include Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Coldplay and K-pop group BTS, which triumphed at Sunday’s fan-voted American Music Awards. The Weeknd, who collaborated on Kanye West’s hit album “Donda,” has said he would no longer submit his work for Grammy consideration.

Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. has said he is committed to rebuilding trust in the Grammys and has worked to increase its membership.

The Grammy Awards will be handed out Jan. 31 in Los Angeles. Last year’s ceremony was held under strict pandemic conditions. While few details about next year’s ceremony have been released, the academy has committed to staging the show and using an inclusion rider, which is meant to increase diversity among those working on the ceremony at all levels.

The 2021 Billboard Music Awards took place in front of a fully vaccinated, fully masked live audience in the plaza outside L.A.’s Microsoft Theatre, with winners emerging from an enclosed backstage area to accept their awards with their backs to the crowd.

As per People magazine, this year’s awards show was based on chart data from March 21, 2020, through April 3, 2021, with winners based on “key fan interactions with music,” including song sales, streaming and social engagement.

Meanwhile, the top social artist and top collaboration categories were fan-voted. The 2021 Billboard Music Awards aired live on NBC.
