LOS ANGELES: John Cena-starrer series “Peacemaker” has been renewed for season two by streaming service HBO Max.

The show is a spin-off to filmmaker James Gunn’s 2021 movie “The Suicide Squad”, in which Cena played the role of Christopher “Peacemaker” Marks.

The first season of the series debuted on HBO Max in January to a positive response from the viewers and the critics.

Gunn, who created the series, will direct and write all episodes for season two, HBO Max said in a statement.

“The brilliance of James Gunn once again shines with ‘Peacemaker’.

He took this character, brought to life by the inimitable John Cena, and created an exceptional series that’s simultaneously thrilling, hilarious and heartfelt, showcasing the humanity beneath this team of misfits living in a superhuman world.

“As the first original DC show to have its series premiere on HBO Max, we are thrilled that the viewers agreed to give peace a f***ing chance,” said Sarah Aubrey, Head of Original Content, HBO Max.

The action-adventure-comedy series explores the origins of Peacemaker, a man who believes in peace at any cost, no matter how many people he has to kill to get it.

Gunn, also known for directing “Guardians of the Galaxy” movies for Marvel Studios, said creating “Peacemaker” has been “one of the true highlights” of his career.

“To have something we all love so much be loved by the audience in turn has been a wonderful experience. I can’t wait for folks to see where Team Peacemaker goes in season two,” he added.

Cena said, “I am incredibly honoured and humbled by the response to ‘Peacemaker’ and the experience of playing this character. Thank you to James Gunn, Peter Safran, HBO Max, the crew, and my castmates who worked tirelessly to make this unforgettable series.”

“Peacemaker” also features Danielle Brooks as Adebayo, Freddie Stroma as Vigilante, Jennifer Holland as Harcourt, Steve Agee as Economos, Chukwudi Iwuji as Murn and Robert Patrick as Auggie Smith.

The show is produced by Gunn’s Troll Court Entertainment and The Safran Company in association with Warner Bros Television.

  • David Dastmalchian boards cast of Keira Knightley-led ‘Boston Strangler’ movie

    By PTI

LOS ANGELES: David Dastmalchian, the star of “The Suicide Squad” and “Dune”, has joined the cast of upcoming drama movie “Boston Strangler”.

The project, which comes from 20th Century Studios and will feature Keira Knightley in the lead, will be written and directed by Matt Ruskin of “Crown Heights” fame.

The film is inspired by the infamous Boston Strangler murders that happened between June 1962 and January 1964.

13 women were murdered during that period by a serial killer.

The film will follow the true story of Loretta McLaughlin (Knightley), the first reporter to connect the murders and break the story of the Strangler.

She and fellow reporter Jean Cole challenged the sexism of the early 1960s to report on the city”s most notorious serial killer and worked tirelessly to keep women informed.

Loretta pursued the story at great personal risk and uncovered corruption that cast doubt on the true identity of the Boston Strangler.

The film’s cast also includes Carrie Coon, Alessandro Nivola and Chris Cooper.

“Boston Strangler” will be produced by veteran filmmaker Ridley Scott along with Kevin Walsh through their Scott Free banner.

Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara of LuckyChap Entertainment are also backing the film.

The film will start production later this month.

  • ‘The Suicide Squad’ director James Gunn reveals his favourite Bollywood film and it stars Aamir Khan

    By ANI
WASHINGTON: Popular Hollywood director James Gunn, who is known for helming films like ‘The Suicide Squad’, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and others, recently revealed his favourite Bollywood film, and it stars superstar Aamir Khan.

James was responding to the tweets of his fans on Tuesday when one fan asked him if he watches Indian movies. To this, he replied that he watches many Indian movies and his favourite one is ‘Lagaan’.

In a recent interaction on Twitter, a fan asked “Do you see any Indian movies sir?” Replying to him James said, “Many. Lagaan is probably my favourite.”

The reply from the filmmaker excited several Bollywood lovers as ‘Lagaan’ holds a special place in the hearts of many Indians. The 2001 film was one of the most successful ones in the history of Indian cinema.

It was even nominated for Oscars in the year 2002 under the Best Foreign Language Film category, though it couldn’t make the cut.

The Ashutosh Gowariker directorial, apart from Aamir, also featured Gracy Singh, Rachel Shelley and Paul Blackthorne in lead roles. The film was produced by Aamir under his banner Aamir Khan Productions.

Recently, the 50-year-old director had revealed that he has completed ‘The Suicide Squad’, including its VFX and all the post-production work. The movie is slated to release on August 6 this year in theatres and HBO MAX.

James enjoys a huge fan following in India and his upcoming superhero movie ‘The Suicide Squad’ is one of the most awaited along with ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 3’.

  • James Gunn says ‘The Suicide Squad’ is complete

    By PTI
LOS ANGELES: Director James Gunn says he has completed “The Suicide Squad”, including VFX and all the post-production work.

The film is still months away for release but the director is looking forward to fans’ reaction.

The movie releases on August 6 in theatres and HBO MAX.

“By the way – we completely finished the Warner Bros movie this week, VFX and all. Can’t wait for you all to see it,” he tweeted.

When a user asked whether it was unusual to have finished the film this long before a release, Gunn said they could achieve that because they did not have any reshoots.

“Yes, it is unusual, but I always planned to have it done by now. What’s more unusual is that we didn’t do a single shot of pickups or any post production shooting.

Outside of Chris Nolan, that almost never happens, if at all, on tentpole superhero films,” the director said.

The “Guardians of the Galaxy” director also said that he had full control over how he shaped the DC’s villain team.

“Yes, the movie is mine from start to finish,” he said.

With tentpole movies, studios usually like to control things, which has led to issues in the past.

Gunn said with the movie finished, he is now looking at “marketing & toys, doing publicity and “waiting for the world to heal just a little more so a larger number of people can see it safely in theaters, where it is intended to be seen.”
