  • Short film based on Grogu from ‘The Mandalorian’ in the works

    By Express News Service

Disney+ is reportedly developing a short film based on the fictional character Grogu from the Star Wars series ‘The Mandalorian’. Although not officially confirmed by Disney, the short film is expected to stream on the site on the 3rd year anniversary of ‘The Mandalorian’ series which falls on 12 November.

According to reports, the short film is titled ‘Grogu and Dust Bunnies’.Lucasfilm and Disney+ had earlier released a couple of Star Wars short films under the title Galaxy of Sounds but the Grogu short film seems to be unrelated to that.

The official Twitter handle of Disney+Italy posted the announcement and then immediately deleted the tweet. The short film is based on Grogu who is from the same species as the popular Star Wars character Yoda. The character was first introduced in the first episode of ‘The Mandalorian’, which premiered in 2019.

The baby-like design of Grogu quickly gained attention and became popular, outshining Star Wars characters from the sequel trilogy films.

  • ‘The Crown,’ ‘Mandalorian’ top Emmy nominations with 24 each

    By Associated Press
LOS ANGELES: “The Crown” tied with “The Mandalorian” for the most Emmy nominations Tuesday with 24 apiece, but the Marvel universe also got bragging rights with runner-up “WandaVision.

The nominations reinforced the rapid rise of streaming, with the top-nominated scripted shows on services that largely emerged in the past two years.

In the top three categories — drama, comedy and limited series — only the NBC show ‘This Is Us’ snagged a nomination.

Netflix’s ‘The Crown’ received its fourth nomination for best series, and is likely the streaming service’s best chance to win its first-ever top series trophy.

The British royal drama moved closer to contemporary events with its version of the courtship and rocky marriage of Prince Charles and Diana Spencer, played by Josh O’Connor and Emma Corrin.

‘These nominations represent the work done in television through the most challenging year I can think of,’ TV academy chief executive Frank Scherma said before the first nominees were announced.

‘While many of us in our medium worked remotely throughout the last 18 months, I have to say it feels so good to be getting back on a set.

Making great television is a collaborative group effort where the sum equals more than the parts, and I can’t tell you how much I’ve missed it.

The nominees for best drama series are: ‘The Boys’; ‘Bridgerton’; ‘The Crown’; ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’; ‘Lovecraft Country’; ‘The Mandalorian’; ‘Pose’; ‘This Is Us.’

The nominees for best comedy series are: ‘black-ish’; ‘Cobra Kai’; ‘Emily in Paris’; ‘The Flight Attendant’; ‘Hacks’; ‘The Kominsky Method’; ‘PEN15’; ‘Ted Lasso.’

The nominees for best miniseries are: ‘The Queen’s Gambit’; ‘I May Destroy You’; ‘Mare of Easttown’; ‘The Underground Railroad”; ‘WandaVision.’

The nominees for best actress in a comedy series are: Aidy Bryant, ‘Shrill’; Jean Smart, ‘Hacks’; Kaley Cuoco, ‘The Flight Attendant’; Tracee Ellis Ross, ‘black-ish’; Allison Janney, ‘Mom.’

The nominees for best actor in a comedy series are: Anthony Anderson, ‘black-ish’; Michael Douglas, ‘The Kominsky Method’; William H. Macy, ‘Shameless’; Jason Sudeikis, ‘Ted Lasso’; Kenan Thompson, ‘Kenan.’

The nominees for best actress in a drama series are: Emma Corrin, ‘The Crown’; Elisabeth Moss, ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’; Uzo Aduba, ‘In Treatment’; Olivia Colman, ‘The Crown’; Mj Rodriguez, ‘Pose’; Jurnee Smollett, ‘Lovecraft Country.’

The nominees for best actor in a drama series are: Sterling K. Brown, ‘This Is Us’; Jonathan Majors, ‘Lovecraft Country’; Josh O’Connor, ‘The Crown’; Regé-Jean Page, ‘Bridgerton’; Billy Porter, ‘Pose’; Matthew Rhys, ‘Perry Mason.’

The nominees for outstanding variety talk series are: ‘Conan’; ‘The Daily Show with Trevor Noah’; ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’; ‘Last Week Tonight with John Oliver’; ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.’

Scherma and father-and-daughter actors Ron Cephas Jones (‘This Is Us’) and Jasmine Cephas Jones (“Blindspotting”) announced the nominees.

The Sept. 10 ceremony, which last year was held virtually because of the COVID-19 pandemic, will air live on CBS from a theater and include a limited in-person audience of nominees and guests.

Cedric the Entertainer is the host.

  • Gina Carano dropped from ‘The Mandalorian’ for posting vitriolic tweets

    By Express News Service
Actor Gina Carano has been fired from the hit show, The Mandalorian, following a social media post that implied that being a Republican today is like being Jewish during the Holocaust.

“Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future. Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable,” a Lucasfilm spokesperson said in a statement.

Moreover, according to hollywoodreporter.com, Carano’s talent agency UTA has also dropped her. On Wednesday, the hashtag #FireGinaCarano started trending following her Instagram post. Even though the actor deleted her Instagram post, screenshots of the post were widely shared by the netizens.

Carano played former Rebel Alliance soldier Cara Dune in The Mandalorian. However, this is not the first time Carano has been the focus of social media ire for her political comments.

In November, the actor tweeted to mock mask-wearing amid the COVID pandemic.  “They have been looking for a reason to fire her for two months, and today was the final straw,” said a source, on the Lucasfilm decision.

  • ‘Star Wars’ spinoff ‘The Mandalorian’ most pirated show of 2020

    By PTI
LOS ANGELES: ‘Star Wars’ spinoff ‘The Mandalorian’ was the most pirated television program of 2020 using BitTorrent, according to an analysis from TorrentFreak.

Based on several sources, including statistics reported by public BitTorrent trackers, the Disney+ show was the most popular in the global ranking of most-torrented shows around the world for 2020, reported IndieWire.

For years, HBO’s fantasy drama “Game of Thrones”, which concluded its eight-season run in May 2019, was the most pirated show but “The Mandalorian” seems to have dethroned the show for the first time.

In 2019, during its first season run, ‘The Mandalorian’ was the third-most torrented show according to the same survey.

Prime Video’s superhero series “The Boys” was at the second spot while HBO’s “Westworld” is at number three, “Vikings” at number four and and CBS’ ‘Star Trek: Picard’ is five, followed by Adult Swim’s ‘Rick and Morty,’ AMC’s ‘The Walking Dead,’ HBO’s ‘The Outsider,’ CW’s ‘The Arrow,’ and CW’s ‘The Flash’.

The TorrentFreak survey only accounts for BitTorrent traffic, which makes up just a fraction of piracy online.

‘The Mandalorian’ finished its second season on December 18.
