Lastly, Flanery will play Gunpowder, which sounds like he may be largely focused on weapons and firearms. • Amazon debuts Jensen Ackles’ first look as Soldier Boy from ‘The Boys’

    By PTI
LOS ANGELES: Streamer Amazon Prime Video on Tuesday unveiled the first look of Jensen Ackles as Soldier Boy from the upcoming season of “The Boys”.

The series is based on The New York Times best-selling comic by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson.

It follows the eponymous team of vigilantes as they combat superpowered individuals who abuse their abilities.

The “Supernatural” alum had boarded the cast of in August last year.

His character of Soldier Boy is considered the original Superhero.

After he fought in World War II, Soldier Boy became the first super celebrity, and a mainstay of American culture for decades.

In the first photo, a bearded Ackles is wearing the predominantly green super suit and holding a shield.

Created by costume designer Laura Jean Shannon and concept artist Greg Hopwood, the outfit seems to be partly inspired by Marvel comics superhero Captain America.

Eric Kripke, the creator, writer and showrunner of “The Boys”, said Ackles’ suit is one of his favourites in the show.

“When I cast Jensen as Soldier Boy, the first thing I said was, ‘I’m most excited for you, because of the amazing process you’ll go through with LJ, our Super Suit designer.’ It took six months but the experience surpassed Jensen’s expectations.

“LJ has made a work of art that tips its hat to the WWII Soldier Boy from the comics, while taking it in a sleek new direction.

And if you think the photos are cool, just wait till you see Jensen in action. It’s one of my very favourite suits,” Kripke said in a statement.

Shannon called Ackles’ Soldier Boy as the “original bad a**”.

With the character’s suit, the designer said she wanted to highlight the bygone era of overt masculinity and grit.

“With that pedigree we dove headfirst into baking in an all-American quality grounded in a military soldier’s practicality with a heavy dose of old school cowboy swagger.

“We knew that the actor had to have Steve McQueen looks and chops with a John Wayne attitude, luckily Jensen Ackles embodies all of that,” she added.

Point Grey Pictures’ Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and James Weaver, Original Film’s Neal H Moritz and Pavun Shetty and Kripke serves as executive producer on the show.

Phil Sgriccia, Craig Rosenberg, Rebecca Sonnenshine, Ken Levin and Jason Netter are also executive producing.

  • ‘The Boys’ spinoff nearing series order at Amazon, Lizze Broadway, Jaz Sinclair join cast

    By PTI
NEW DELHI: Amazon Prime Video has announced that their untitled “The Boys” spinoff is now nearing the formal greenlight at the studio with Lizze Broadway and Jaz Sinclair joining the ensemble cast of the irreverent superhero drama.

Amazon had announced that they were moving ahead with a spinoff in September 2020.

Set at America’s only college exclusively for young adult superheroes (and run by Vought International), the untitled Boys spinoff is described as an irreverent, R-rated series that explores the lives of hormonal, competitive Supes as they put their physical, sexual, and moral boundaries to the test, competing for the best contracts in the best cities.

Part college show, part Hunger Games — with all the heart, satire and raunch of The Boys, the official logline read.

Broadway, whose past TV credits include “The Rookie”, “Bones” and “Splitting up Together” will play the role of Emma, a young superhero.

Sinclair, who most recently starred in “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” and featured in “The Vampire Diaries”, has been cast as Marie, another of the young superheroes.

The spinoff, like “The Boys”, is also produced by Sony Pictures Television Studios and Amazon Studios, in association with Point Grey Pictures, Kripke Enterprises and Original Film.

Craig Rosenberg will serve as executive producer/showrunner.

  • I love a good underdog story: ‘The Boys’, ‘Star Trek’ actor Jack Quaid

    By PTI
NEW DELHI: American actor Jack Quaid says he loves playing underdog roles be it in the smash hit series “The Boys” or in the animated show “Star Trek: Lower Decks” as he believes such characters resonate with the audiences.

Son of Hollywood stars Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan, Quaid debuted as an actor with a supporting part in “The Hunger Games” in 2012 and later found fame with Amazon’s “The Boys”.

“I love a good underdog story. I love a story about people who are at the bottom of the barrel, just trying to survive,” Quaid told PTI in a Zoom interview from Toronto.

In “The Boys”, the actor plays Hughie Campbell, an everyday guy, who finds himself at the opposite side of evil superheroes.

With two seasons already out, the satirical drama has been praised for its fresh take on superhero genre.

The 28-year-old actor said his portrayal of Hughie came from a personal space as he could relate to his experiences in the show.

“The show is so insane and there’s all these people exploding and all this insanity of the world that you need someone from whose eyes you can see it all.

That’s just something I’ve tried to focus on.

“He means so much to me. In a lot of ways, we are somewhat similar. Not maybe a thousand per cent but he feels very personal to me. So, when people relate to him that really does mean a lot,” Quaid said.

His role in “Star Trek: Lower Decks”, which has been created by “Rick & Morty” scribe Mike McMahan, is thematically similar to Hughie as the animated series looks at the lives of the people serving in the lower rung of a Starfleet ship.

Set in the same universe as previous “Star Trek” movies and shows, the series voice features Quaid as Brad Boimler alongside the likes of Tawny Newsome, Noel Wells and Eugene Cordero.

Quaid said the animated series looks at the “Star Trek” franchise from a unique perspective.

“Usually you’re focused on the bridge crew and what all the upper echelons of crew members are doing.

When you see the people in the lower decks, they’re running past Scotty as the ship is exploding and you never really get an opportunity to know what their lives are like.

“So, this is a really cool way to discover those people…I think it’s a side of Star Trek that we haven’t really seen before, not to this extent.” Another aspect of “Lower Decks” that Quaid liked was that though the show is a comedy, it doesn’t showcases its characters as a bunch of incompetent people.

“‘Star Trek’ has always been funny and had funny moments but this is the first time we’ve made an all out comedy.

But the challenge with that was how do you make a ‘Star Trek’ show funny without breaking Star Trek? “What was great was that we made everybody super smart.

We made everybody intelligent and we’ve made everybody competent.

And the humour comes from their flaws as characters, but it was never about their competency.” Though the fan-favourite franchise has been around for a long time; since the days of William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and Patrick Stewart, Quaid’s first introduction to the series was through JJ Abrams reboot 2009 film, featuring Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana and Zachary Quinto.

“When I was in high school, I remember going to prom with someone. But before that, we went on like a date. So we saw that first movie. It was a very awkward date but the movie saved it.

“It’s a great series of movies and it did such a great job of bringing new Star Trek fans into the franchise and at the same time also satisfied old fans who have been around for decades.

So that was kind of my real benchmark for the series.”

Now that he is a part of this cult-hit sci-fi series, Quaid said he is on route to becoming a full-on “Trekkie”; a term used to describe hardcore “Star Trek” fans.

“When I got this job, I was obviously very excited to join the franchise.

But I realised that I should know what I’m talking about, not only to perform the character to the best of my ability but also to get a handle on this world and pay some respects to this thing that’s been around for so long.

“So I made sure to do my research and Mike McMahan, our showrunner and Tawny Newsome who plays Mariner, they both recommended some great episodes of the ‘Next Generation’ for me to watch, just to get my feet wet initially.

I’m not an expert yet, I’m still learning a lot about Star Trek but I went from being a casual Trekkie to a full-blown Trekkie.”

“Star Trek: Lower Decks” started streaming on Amazon Prime Video from Friday.

  • The Boys Season 3 to begin filming soon in Canada

    By Express News Service
Season 3 of Amazon Prime’s hit superhero show The Boys will begin filming soon. Jack Quaid, who plays Hughie Campbell, confirmed the news on his social media by posting a photo showing himself traveling to Canada for the show.

The superhero show, which is based on comic books of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, became one of the most-streamed TV series of 2019 and 2020. After the finale of season 2, there wasn’t much news about the 3rd season. Quaid’s post indicates that the filming should begin in late January.

Other than Quaid, The Boys also stars Karl Urban, Antony Starr and Erin Moriarty, among a large ensemble cast. The Boys season 3 is expected to take the story in a new direction, with the season 2 finale reveal of Victoria Neuman (Claudia Doumit) as a supe. Hughie signing up to work for Neuman was the cherry on the cake, and fans can expect that the development might create a tense situation between Hughie and Butcher (Urban).
