  • Thane district’s COVID-19 count rises by 611, death toll by 7

    THANE: With 611 more persons testing positive for coronavirus, the infection count in Thane district of Maharashtra mounted to 2,63,625, an official said on Saturday.

    These new cases were reported on Friday, he said.

    As the virus claimed the life of seven persons during the day, the death toll in the district rose to 6,263.

    Its COVID-19 mortality rate stood at 2.38 per cent, he added.

    So far, 2,51,722 patients have recuperated from the infection, which took the recovery rate to 95.48 per cent.

    There are 5,640 active cases in the district at present, the official said.

    In neighboring Palghar district, the COVID-19 case count has gone up to 45,885, while the death toll is 1,205, another official said.

  • Thane cops book teen for raping girl in train toilet

    THANE: A 19-year-old boy has been booked for allegedly raping a girl in the toilet of the Gorakhpur Express train, Thane police said on Saturday.

    As per the complaint, the incident took place around 7 am on Wednesday, an official said.

    “The girl and boy were traveling together. He took her to the toilet and raped her. Kurar police in Mumbai registered a case on the basis of the victim’s complaint and it was then transferred to us,” the Thane railway police station official said.

    No arrest has been made and further probe was underway, he added.

  • 65 per cent of private hospitals in Thane lack fire safety measures: City Corporation

    THANE: The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) on Saturday said that 65.20 per cent private hospitals in the city have not complied with fire safety regulations despite repeated reminders.

    In an official release, the civic body said that there are 347 private hospitals in the city.

    The TMC recently conducted a fire audit of these facilities.

    However, 28 of them were found to be shut.

    Of the remaining 319 hospitals, 111 found to have complied with the fire safety regulations and submitted the certificates, it said.

    The remaining 208, which comes to 65.20 per cent are yet to comply with the fire safety norms and submit their certificates, the release said.

    The civic body has given time till February 22 to these 208 hospitals for compliance, in the absence of which they will face severe action, it added.

  • Cops save two women from committing suicide in Thane

    THANE: Police have saved lives of two women who tried to commit suicide at separate places here in Maharashtra, officials said on Wednesday.

    Both the incidents took place on Tuesday and the women were found to be depressed due to domestic and other issues, they said.

    An assistant police inspector from Titwala police station said he was passing by the Raita river bridge when he saw a woman, later identified as a 60-year-old resident of Kalyan town, trying to jump from it into the water body.

    As she attempted to jump, her saree got entangled in a rod of a bridge pillar.

    While she was trying to pull away her dress from the rod, the policeman rushed there and rescued her, the official said.

    The woman later told the police that she wanted to commit suicide as she was fed up of her life, he said.

    In another incident, a 45-year-old woman jumped into the Versova creek from a bridge here on Tuesday afternoon, a release from the Mira-Bhayander Vasai-Virar (MBVV) police commissionerate said.

    A constable from the MBVV police, who saw the woman trying to take the extreme step, immediately jumped into the creek and brought her out of the water, it said.

    The woman was upset due to some domestic issues, the police added.

  • Fire at private hall in Maharashtra’s Thane; no casualty

    THANE: A fire broke out in a hall used to hold spiritual discoursesin Maharashtra’s Thane city on Wednesday, a civic official said.

    No one was injured in the blaze which erupted around 12.

    15 am in the private hall located in Panchpakhadi area, Thane civic body’s regional disaster management cell chief Santosh Kadam said.

    The premises was destroyed in the blaze, he said, adding that three fire engines were rushed to the spot and the flames were doused by around 2.30 am.

    A probe into the cause of the fire is underway, he added.

  • Injured Jackal strays into medical store in Maharashtra’s Thane; rescued

    THANE: An injured jackal strayed into a medical store in Maharashtra’s Thane city, causing panic among staff at the shop, a civic official said.

    The incident took place on Monday afternoon and the animal did not attack anyone.

    It was later rescued by forest department personnel, Thane civic body’s regional disaster management cell (RDMC) chief Santosh Kadam said.

    The jackal, around two years’ old, entered the medical store located in Kharkar Ali area here around 2.30 pm, the official said.

    The shop employees alerted the RDMC, which in-turn informed forest department authorities.

    Personnel of the forest department with the help of an animal protection association later caught the jackal, the official said.

    As the animal had leg injuries, it was taken to a veterinary hospital ay the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) at Borivali in neighbouring Mumbai, the official said.

    Since the SGNP is located nearby, wild animals sometimes stray into residential areas in the vicinity.

  •  Woman elopes with paramour in Maharashtra, husband files complaint

    THANE: A 35-year-old married woman has allegedly eloped with her paramour hailing from Kalyan in Maharashtra’s Thane district, police said on Monday.

    The woman, who lived with her husband and four minor children in Saki Naka area of neighbouring Mumbai, also took along her five-year-old son, an official from Kalyan taluka police station said.

    As per a police complaint filed on Sunday by her husband, who works as a security supervisor, he and some relatives went to Shirdi on January 7 to attend a marriage, leaving his wife, three daughters and son at home.

    When the man returned home the next day, his wife and son were missing.

    His daughters told him that she had gone to a relative’s place with the son, the official said.

    The man called up the relative and later found the woman had allegedly eloped with her paramour, a resident of Kalyan taluka here, to marry him, he said.

    After failing to trace his wife and son, the man filed a police complaint in Kalyan.

    The police have registered a case under Indian Penal Code Section 363 (kidnapping) and are conducting a probe into it, the official said.

  • Thane family celebrates ‘haldi kumkum’ with transgenders

    THANE: A family in Thane in Maharashtra chose a novel path by opting for a traditional celebration of ‘haldi kumkum’ by inviting transgenders to give a message of inclusiveness to society.

    The Mhatre family laid down a warm welcome for the invitees at their Khopri home on Friday, with one of them stating that they had earlier invited transgenders for a marriage function in the household.

    The celebration, replete with traditional ingredients like turmeric, vermilion, sesame seeds, ‘puran poli’ and garlands, was the brainchild of local journalist Pragya Mhatre.

    ‘Haldi kumkum’ is an event where married women exchange turmeric and vermilion in order to wish their husbands long lives.

  • Three injured as four men open fire on jewellery shop in Thane

    THANE: Three people were injured after a group of four opened fire on a jewellery shop in Ambernath in Thane district on Sunday afternoon, police said.

    The shooters came on two motorcycles and fired seven rounds at around 1:40am, in which three men were seriously injured, an official said.

    The quartet’s attempt to rob the jewellery shop was unsuccessful, and they fled from the spot soon after, he added.

    “The three injured people have been admitted in a hospital in Ulhasnagar. Senior officials have rushed to the spot and further details are awaited. A nakabandi has been imposed in the area to nab the culprits,” he said.

  • Three held in Thane for attempting to gun down Shiv Sena leader Deepak Mhatre, wife

    THANE: Three persons were arrested on Wednesday for allegedly attempting to gun down a Shiv Sena leader and his wife in Bhiwandi of Maharashtra’s Thane district, police said.

    Two motorcycle-borne men fired three rounds at Deepak Mhatre, who is the party’s branch head in Kalher village, and his wife Mangala, on January 3, additional commissioner of police Sanjay Yenpure said.

    The couple, who is contesting the upcoming gram panchayat elections, managed to escape unhurt and an offence was registered at the time under relevant sections of the Arms Act and the IPC at Narpoli police station.

    Based on a tip-off, the police nabbed Vicky alias Sonu Prakash Mhatre (25), dumper driver Pratam Kishore Bhoir (20) and Vaibha Vijay Bhokare (25) for the attack, senior inspector Ashok Honmane of the Bhiwandi crime branch said.

    The couple had been attacked, as they were contesting the gram panchayat polls at Kalher village, which is slated to be held on January 15.
