  • At least five killed as building slabs collapse in Maharashtra’s Thane district

    THANE: Five persons including three women were killed after slabs of an illegal residential building in Ulhasnagar township in Thane district of Maharashtra collapsed on Saturday, officials said.

    Eleven others were rescued.

    The body of Sandhya Dodwal, 45, was recovered from the debris late at night, said Santosh Kadam, chief of the regional disaster management cell, Thane Municipal Corporation.

    The incident took place at ground-plus-four-storey “Manorama” building located in camp no 1 around 1.40 pm.

    A slab on the fourth floor came crashing down on other slabs which all landed on the ground floor, trapping people in the process, Kadam said.

    A team of NDRF personnel joined in the rescue operations.

    Local firemen rushed to the scene and rescued 11 residents who were taken to a local hospital.

    The deceased were identified as Monty Milind Parshe (12), Aishwaraya Harish Dodwal (23), Harish Dodwal (40), Savitri Parshe (60) and Sandhya Dodwal (45).

    Ulhasnagar Corporation PRO Yuvraj Badhane said the building was an illegal structure constructed in 1994.

    It had nine tenements and seven shops on the ground floor.

    Speaking to reporters at the scene, Kalyan MP Srikant Shinde said kin of the deceased will be paid a compensation of Rs 5 lakh each.

  • Maharashtra: 5 injured in fire caused by gas leak in Thane

    THANE: Four members of a family and a mechanic were injured in a fire caused by LPG cylinder leakage at a house in Maharashtra’s Thane district, an official said on Sunday.

    The incident took place around 9.30 pm on Saturday in the flat located on the seventh floor of a building in Badlapur township here, Thane Municipal Corporation’s regional disaster management cell chief Santosh Kadam said.

    The family members noticed gas leakage from the nozzle of the LPG cylinder and called a mechanic to plug it, he said.

    While the mechanic was attending to the fault, the gas leakage caused a fire and an explosion in the house, the official said.

    “A couple, their two children and the mechanic received burn injuries. They have been admitted to a local hospital,” he said. After being alerted, local firemen rushed to the spot and doused the blaze within an hour, he added.

  • Maharashtra: Fire at sanitiser factory in Thane, no casualty

    THANE: A major fire broke out in a sanitiser factory in Maharashtra’s Thane district on Monday, a civic official said.

    No casualty has been reported so far, Thane Municipal Corporation’s regional disaster management cell chief Santosh Kadam said.

    The blaze erupted around 12.15 am in the factory located behind a hotel on the Mumbai-Nashik highway in Asangaon township here, he said.

    “So far, no one has been injured. The cause of the fire is still not known,” the official said.

    Six fire engines, including from the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation, Bhiwandi-Nizampur, Navi Mumbai, Thane city and Ulhasnagar, were rushed to the spot, an official at the Thane district police control room said.

    Efforts were still on to douse the blaze, he said.

  • Man kills father-in-law, dumps body on railway track in Maharashtra’s Thane

    THANE: The railway police in Maharashtra’s Thane city has arrested a man for allegedly killing his father-in-law and dumping his body on a railway track, an official said on Thursday.

    The crime came to light when the body of an unidentified man was recovered from the railway track between Karjat and Bhivpuri stations on March 17, the official said.

    An offence under section 302 (murder) of the IPC was registered with the Karjat railway police, he said.

    During the probe, the victim was identified as Ravi Pawar (45) a resident of Mangaon in Amravati district, he said.

    Pawar’s family informed the police that he had set out with his son-in-law on March 16, and had never returned, he said.

    Based on a tip-off, the police laid a trap and the victim’s son-in-law Sailesh Bhosale on Tuesday, the official said, adding that further probe is underway to ascertain the motive for the killing.

  • Fire guts two rooms in Thane hostel, no injury reported

    THANE: Ninety inmates of a hostel in Sonale in Thane district were brought out safely on Monday evening after a fire broke out in the facility’s kitchen and gutted two rooms, an official said.

    The blaze started at around 8:10pm and four fire-tending vehicles of Bhiwandi Nizampura and Kalyan Dombivali civic bodies were deployed to douse it in an hour, he said.

    “The students in the four-storey hostel panicked and some were about to jump from the ledges. However fire brigade personnel managed to convince them to drop the idea. No one was injured in the incident,” said chief fire officer Rajesh Pawar.

    He said the hostel complex has some safety issues, including the kitchen being allowed to function from it.

  • Sex racket busted in Thane, one arrested

    THANE: A sex racket was busted in Naya Nagar area of Mira Bhayander in Thane district and one person was arrested, police said on Monday.

    Acting on a tip-off, a police team arrived at a restaurant late Saturday evening and arrested a man who was setting up deals to supply women, Senior Inspector Sampat Patil of Bhayander division Anti Human Trafficking Cell said.

  • NCB conducts raids in Mumbai and Thane; five held with drugs

    MUMBAI: The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has raided three locations in Mumbai and Thane and seized various drugs, an official said on Sunday, adding four persons have been arrested while a teenage girl detained.

    During the operation which began on Saturday night and continued till early Sunday morning, the NCB seized 165 grams of Mephedrone, 20 blots (0.5 grams) of LSD, 8 grams of MDMA/Ecstasy tablets from the arrested persons.

    The raids were conducted in suburban Mahim and Andheri, and in neighbouring Thane.

    The accused are identified as Mark DeCosta, Abdul Kadir, Naziya Shaikh, Imran Shaikh and a teenage girl.

    As part of a new modus operandi being adopted by racketeers, teenage girls are used for trafficking drugs, the official said.

    Further investigation is on, he added.

  • COVID-19: Lockdown at 16 hotspots in Thane till March 31

    THANE: Amid the rise in COVID-19 cases, Thane Municipal Corporation on Tuesday imposed a lockdown at 16 hotspot areas from today till March 31.

    Activities will be allowed in areas outside hotspots as per relaxation given under Mission Begin Again by the Maharashtra government.

    Meanwhile, Maharashtra reported 8,744 new COVID-19 cases, 9,068 recoveries, and 22 deaths in the last 24 hours, the State Health Department informed on Monday.

    The state has so far reported 22,28,471 total COVID-19 cases, out of which, 97,637 active cases, the Maharashtra Health Department said. A total of 52,500 people have died due to COVID-19 in the state so far.

    With 9,068 more recoveries in the state, as many as 20,77,112 cases have recovered from the virus.

  • Woman killed in husband’s shop in Thane, hunt on for servant

    THANE: A 30-year-old woman was killed in a ration shop run by her husband in Maharashtra’s Thane district, police said on Tuesday.

    The incident took place on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday in the shop, located in Manpada area of Dombivli township here, where their servant was also present, an official from Manpada police station said.

    The couple had a quarrel following which the husband left the shop.

    After some time, he called up the servant to bring his wife home.

    However, the servant informed him that the woman was lying in a pool of blood in the shop.

    After taking the call, the servant fled from the place, the official said.

    The husband then rushed to the shop and took his wife to a hospital where doctors declared her brought dead, the official said.

    He later lodged a police complaint against the servant.

    The police registered a case under Indian Penal Code 302 (murder), the official said, adding that search was underway for the servant.

  • Maharashtra: Man gets 22 months RI for stalking girl

    THANE: A special court in Maharashtra’s Thane has sentenced a 24-year-old man to 22 months of rigorous imprisonment for stalking a girl.

    In the order passed recently, Additional Sessions Judge R R Vaishnav also imposed a fine of Rs 500 on the convict Sunilkumar Dukhilal Jaiswal.

    The court found him guilty under IPC section 354D (stalking) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

    Additional public prosecutor Ujjwala Moholkar told the court that the man had repeatedly stalked the victim, the teenage daughter of the complainant who is a vegetable vendor, in June 2016.
