England’s Harry Brook, currently ranked second in Test cricket, narrowly missed a century against India in the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy 2025, falling just one run short. During the first match at Headingley, after hitting a powerful six off Prasidh Krishna, Brook was dismissed attempting a similar shot, caught by Shardul Thakur. This came after he had been dropped twice by the Indian side, including a miss by Rishabh Pant. Brook’s innings highlighted his vulnerability, given he has been dropped 13 times in Test matches from 26 legal deliveries in the past year.

Brook joined an unfortunate club, becoming the 14th England batter to be dismissed on 99. The last player to achieve this was Jonny Bairstow, who fell in similar fashion against South Africa in 2017. Furthermore, Brook is the third batter to be dismissed on 99 at the Headingley pitch.

India, after bowling out England for 465, started their second innings with a small lead of just 6 runs. Yashasvi Jaiswal, who scored a century in the first innings, failed to make an impact in the second, getting out for just 4 runs. KL Rahul reached a half-century, following his earlier contribution of 42 runs in the first innings. Captain Shubman Gill also had an early exit in the second innings.

The nation continues to mourn the tragic Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad on June 13, which occurred shortly after takeoff en route to London. The devastating incident resulted in the loss of approximately 270 lives, including passengers, crew, pilots, and students from a medical college at the crash site. The sporting community, including cricketer Rishabh Pant, has been deeply affected by the tragedy. Speaking before the first Test match, Pant shared his emotional response, highlighting the profound impact of the event. In light of the sorrow, the unveiling of the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy, formerly known as the Pataudi Trophy, was postponed. Pant stated, “The whole of India were saddened, disheartened. At the same time, the only thing from our side is, we are going to be sticking to them how we can make India happy again. Obviously, emotions are going to be high because of what happened in the crash. But at the same time, we want to put our best foot forward for the country.” The first Test between England and India is scheduled for June 20 at Headingley, with young captain leading Team India against Ben Stokes’ England side. The series marks the beginning of the WTC cycle 2025-27 for both teams.
