  • CBI grills Tejaswi while ED questions his sister Misa Bharati in the land for jobs scam

    Express News Service

RJD Supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav’s son and deputy chief minister of Bihar Tejaswi Yadav on Saturday appeared before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the land for jobs scam.  Lalu’s daughter Misa Bharati faced the Directorate of Enforcement in connection with the same case.

Tejaswi Yadav was grilled by CBI sleuths at the agency’s headquarters in Delhi. The central investigating agency is probing the role of Lalu Yadav, the former Railway Minister in the UPA Government, and his kin in the land for jobs scam.

According to the CBI, job aspirants were offered jobs in the railways when Lalu Yadav was the railways’ minister from 2004 to 2009 in exchange for land allegedly surrendered by them to the Yadav family and their associates.

Tejaswi was summoned by the agency to appear on March 4 and 11, for questioning in the case but he skipped the summons and had approached the Delhi High Court challenging the action of the agency to call him for questioning. The matter was taken up for hearing on March 16 when Tejaswi through his lawyer agreed to appear before CBI as the agency said that there were no plans to arrest him in the matter. Tejaswi left the CBI office around 8 pm.

The CBI action was in continuation with the questioning of Lalu Yadav and his wife and former Bihar chief minister Rabri Devi earlier this month.

Lalu Yadav’s daughter Misa, also a Rajya Sabha MP, appeared before the ED officials for questioning on Saturday morning. She left the agency headquarters in the evening. According to sources she has not been given a date yet to reappear before the agency again. She however maintained that she has been assisting with the investigations and would continue to do so.

The ED’s action is a follow-up on the CBI’s investigation, which is now probing the acquisition of assets by the Yadav family in the wake of the proceeds generated by corrupt practices in wake of the scam.

Earlier in October last year, CBI had filed a chargesheet against Lalu Prasad, the former railway minister, his wife Rabri Devi and 14 others in connection with an alleged land-for-jobs scam during his tenure in the Railways.

Lalu’s daughter Misa and a former general manager of the Railways were also named as accused in the charge sheet filed before a special CBI court recently.

  • Samajwadi Party to initiate caste census if voted to power in UP Assembly polls

    By PTI

LUCKNOW: The Samajwadi Party on Monday said it will initiate a caste-based census if voted to power in the next year’s Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls.

The statement by the party came hours after a delegation of 10 parties from Bihar headed by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in support of a caste-based census.

National spokesperson of SP Ashutosh Verma on Monday told PTI that from the very beginning, the party has been backing a caste-based census.

“Which scheme should be implemented and in which manner so that best results can be obtained, for this a caste-based census has to be done. Otherwise, implementing schemes will be more or less shooting in the dark, which has been happening till now,” he said, reiterating the demand for it.

Stressing on taking development schemes to the last man in society, Verma said, “”If voted to power in UP, the SP will conduct a caste-based census at its own cost.”

SP chief Akhilesh Yadav has himself announced this.

“The stand of the SP on the caste-based census is absolutely clear. And, we believe in ‘jiski jitni sankhya bhaari, utni uski hissedaari’ — (partnership in government should be proportional to the numbers of a community),” Verma said.

He also said the ruling BJP is not giving encouraging indications for the caste-based census.

Earlier in the day, a delegation of 10 parties headed by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Monday in support of the demand.

Kumar asserted that statistics about different castes will help in formulating development schemes effectively as many of them have not benefited so far in line with their actual population.

RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, who was part of the delegation, said such a census was in national interest and will be a historic measure and help the poor and the most deprived sections of the society.

If animals and trees can be counted, so can people, he said.

Kumar was joined by representatives of all major parties, including the BJP and Congress, as they submitted their demand to Modi.

  • Illicit liquor recovery case: Why is Minister R S Rai’s brother not yet arrested, asks Tejaswi Yadav

    By ANI
PATNA: Rashtriya Janta Dal (RJD) leader and former Bihar deputy Chief Minister Tejaswi Yadav on Wednesday slammed Chief Minister Nitish Kumar asking why the brother of Minister RS Rai has not yet been arrested in connection with an alleged recovery of illicit liquor from a school run by him.

“The Minister said he has no contact with his brother for the past 10 years. But after our press conference, he confessed that his brother owns the school. Why is his brother not arrested?,” asked Tejashwi Yadav.

“Not only is there an FIR in the name of the Minister’s brother, but there is also an FIR against the Minister’s nephew. It is written in the police diary. The owner of the pickup, which has been recovered, is also the Minister’s brother Hanslal Rai, which is also written in the police diary,” he added.

Tejaswi further hit out at the CM saying if he is unable to arrest a brother of a minister, who is involved in liquor smuggling, then he should open a liquor bar at his residence on the fifth anniversary of liquor ban on April 1.

On March 13, there was a ruckus in the Bihar assembly regarding the allegations of smuggling of illicit liquor against state minister Ramsurat Rai. The controversy surfaced after illicit liquor was recovered earlier this week from a school in Muzaffarpur run by Rai’s brother.

In 2016, Nitish Kumar banned alcohol consumption in Bihar making it a dry state.
