Mouma Das stands as a towering figure in Indian table tennis, her career a testament to grit and excellence. Hailing from West Bengal’s bustling Kolkata, born in 1984, she was nudged into the sport by her father, whose love for athletics ignited her spark. From modest beginnings, Mouma transformed challenges into triumphs through sheer determination.

Her aggressive tactics on the table, coupled with exceptional reflexes and strategic placements, have made her a formidable opponent worldwide. The year 2000 brought her first taste of international success with a gold at Yakutsk’s Children of Asia Games. Fast forward to the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games, where her contributions helped India bag team silver.

A veteran of 17 World Championships, spanning cities like Kuala Lumpur, Osaka, Paris, and beyond up to Dusseldorf in 2017, Mouma holds a record shared with a Thai counterpart for Asian participation. Commonwealth hauls include team bronze in 2006, silver in 2010, doubles bronze that year, and golden glory in team events by 2018 alongside doubles silver. South Asian Games added more golds in team, singles, and doubles.

Battling over 400 matches across 75 nations, Mouma’s legacy is cemented by national accolades: Arjuna in 2013, Padma Shri in 2021. Today, working with Oil India Limited, she remains a beacon for aspiring athletes, proving that with focus and fervor, global podiums are within reach.

In a rollercoaster of emotions at the WTT Star Contender Chennai 2026, India’s Harmeet Desai and Yashaswini Ghorpade powered into the mixed doubles final with a flawless 3-0 (11-9, 11-6, 11-9) demolition of compatriots Payas Jain and Sindhuja Das in the semifinals. Hosted at the Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sports University, the fourth seeds now eye glory against Romania’s formidable Eduard Ionescu and Bernadette Szocs.

G. Sathiyan stole the spotlight in men’s singles, staging a heroic comeback against the same Romanian Ionescu. Trailing 1-2, the 10th seed roared back to win 3-2 (9-11, 11-3, 10-12, 11-7, 11-5), booking a quarterfinal date with Lubomir Jancharik. The Czech player had earlier prevailed over Manush Shah 3-1 (11-4, 13-11, 5-11, 13-11).

Sathiyan’s path featured a solid 3-1 triumph over Korea’s Lim Jong-hoon, while Manush Shah swept Park Gyu-hyun 3-0. Snehit Suravajjula fought valiantly but fell 3-1 to Korea’s top seed Oh Jun-seung, who later withdrew from his quarterfinal against Thibault Poret due to injury sustained in mixed doubles.

Women’s singles saw Nithya Mani, ranked 481st globally, pull off a miracle on Friday against Mizuki Oikawa, overcoming a 0-2 hole in a 52-minute epic 3-2 win. Her momentum fizzled against Cheng I-ching, losing 3-1 in the pre-quarters. With mixed doubles final and men’s quarters featuring Indians, the Chennai event underscores India’s rising table tennis stature on the world stage.

CHENNAI: Snehit Suravajjula delivered a masterclass in resilience, rallying from 0-2 down to edge out Japan’s Mizuki Oikawa 3-2 (9-11, 15-17, 11-4, 11-6, 18-16) in the WTT Contender men’s singles on Friday. This upset propels the Indian into the pre-quarterfinals, setting up a blockbuster round-of-16 encounter with world No. 1 seed Oh Junseong.

Hosted at Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sports University, the contest kept spectators on the edge. Snehit’s early setbacks didn’t deter him; instead, they ignited a fiery response with commanding wins in games three and four.

The decider was pure tension. Snehit shared his mental strategy: ‘I focused solely on each point, ignoring the scoreboard after messing up prior match points.’

The 25-year-old admitted playing without pressure helped. ‘No expectations meant I was loose. Losing the first two games 9-11 and 15-17 surprisingly built my confidence for the turnaround.’

On the doubles front, Sathiyan Gnanasekaran and Harmeet Desai dominated France’s third-seeded duo Florian Bourasod and Esteban Dor 3-0 (11-7, 11-9, 11-7), storming into the men’s doubles semifinals against Korea’s Lim Jonghoon and Oh Junseong.

Wildcard pair Payas Jain and Sindrella Das also shone in mixed doubles, defeating top seeds Manush Shah and Diya Chitale 3-1 (12-10, 13-11, 10-12, 11-9) to reach the semifinals.

This performance underscores India’s depth in table tennis, with Snehit’s grit promising more excitement ahead in Chennai.

India’s table tennis prowess was on full display at the WTT Contender Chennai 2026 on Thursday, with Manush Shah and Diya Chitale powering into the mixed doubles quarterfinals after a heart-stopping win over Korean qualifiers.

The recently crowned WTT Contender Muscat champions dug deep, saving three match points en route to a 3-2 (10-12, 11-6, 12-10, 5-11, 12-10) triumph in 42 minutes. The co-hosted event by Ultimate Table Tennis and Sharath Kamal Academy lived up to its billing as a high-stakes battleground.

Their next challenge comes from wildcard entrants Payas Jain and Sindrelia Das, who cruised past Kazakhstan’s Iskender Kharki and Sarvinoz Mirkadirova 3-0 (11-8, 11-6, 11-7).

Qualifier Ankur Bhattacharjee continued his fine form, eliminating France’s Florian Bourasod 3-1 (11-5, 11-8, 3-11, 11-9), and now faces Japan’s Kazuhiro Yoshimura.

With Swastika Ghosh, Ankur edged out Koreans Park Gyuhyeon and Kim Na-young 3-2 (11-9, 3-11, 11-8, 6-11, 11-9) for a quarterfinal date against top seeds Harmeet Desai and Yashaswini Ghorpade, who blanked Romania’s Darius Movileanu and Andrea Dragoman 3-0 (11-8, 11-4, 11-7).

Snehit Suravajjula mounted a stunning recovery against Divyansh Srivastava, winning 3-2 (9-11, 11-8, 6-11, 11-7, 11-6) to meet Mizuki Oikawa next. Harmeet Desai ousted Iulian Chirita 3-1 (11-8, 12-10, 9-11, 11-8).

Women’s singles saw young Divyanshi Bhoumik give Korea’s Ryu Hanna a scare before losing 3-1 (6-11, 11-6, 11-8, 11-5), while Diya Chitale dispatched Anusha Kutumbale 3-0 (11-8, 12-10, 11-8).

As the tournament progresses, India’s contingent is primed for deeper runs, fueling national hopes for podium glory.

Sathiyan Gnansekaran’s story is the stuff of sporting legends. Once on track for an engineering degree, he boldly switched to professional table tennis, culminating in a historic Commonwealth Games gold medal for India.

Hailing from a middle-class background, Sathiyan juggled college lectures and table tennis sessions. The sport’s demand for full-time commitment forced a tough choice. Opting out of engineering, he dove headfirst into training at the SDAT Academy in Chennai. His dedication showed results swiftly, with podium finishes in national championships.

Internationally, Sathiyan made waves at the Asian Games and World Championships. But Birmingham 2022 became his defining moment. Teaming up with Manika Batra, they overcame formidable opponents, including Nigeria and Malaysia, before dominating the final 4-1 against England’s pair.

Sathiyan’s agile footwork, powerful forehand, and mental resilience were instrumental. This gold elevated India’s table tennis profile, signaling a shift from perennial underdogs to contenders. Away from the table, Sathiyan remains grounded, mentoring juniors and advocating for better sports infrastructure.

As Paris Olympics loom, Sathiyan’s trajectory promises more glory. His career pivot proves that calculated risks can rewrite destinies, motivating a generation to chase excellence in chosen fields.

The WTT Feeder Series kicked off with an electrifying mixed doubles qualifying clash where Sarthak and Hardi emerged triumphant over Snehil and Sayali. This hard-fought battle highlighted the depth of talent in Indian table tennis, with the winners advancing confidently.

From the first serve, Sarthak-Hardi dictated the pace. Hardi’s explosive backhand winners and Sarthak’s impeccable net play formed a formidable wall. Snehil-Sayali, known for their endurance, pushed back with relentless rallies, but errors crept in under pressure.

Key moments defined the match: a spectacular lob from Hardi that caught Snehil off-guard, and Sarthak’s spinning serves that neutralized Sayali’s attacks. The scoreline reflected their dominance, though Snehil-Sayali’s spirited second-game surge kept spectators on edge.

As qualifiers conclude, Sarthak-Hardi’s progression underscores India’s growing mixed doubles strength. Coaches praise their synergy, honed through rigorous national training camps. With main draw opponents looming, this pair is poised to make waves, potentially etching their names in WTT history.
