In a disappointing turn of events for Pakistan cricket, star batter Babar Azam has etched his name into an ignominious T20I record. This occurred during the final league stage match of the ongoing T20I tri-series, where Sri Lanka secured a thrilling six-run victory, also confirming their spot in the final.

Sri Lanka successfully defended a total of 184 runs against a resilient Pakistan lineup. While captain Salman Ali Agha staged a remarkable comeback with a stellar innings, Azam’s contribution was cut short with a second-ball duck. This brought his T20I duck count for Pakistan to 10, joint-highest with Umar Akmal and Saim Ayub.

The tournament has been particularly challenging for Azam, who managed only 90 runs across four matches, averaging a modest 22.5 with a strike rate of 113.92. This dip in form follows a recent century against Sri Lanka in an ODI, which ended a long international innings drought. His current struggles for runs and consistency raise significant concerns for the Pakistan team’s prospects.

Sri Lanka posted a competitive 184/6 in their allotted 20 overs, largely due to Kamil Mishara’s aggressive 76 off 48 balls. Pakistan’s chase faltered early, slipping to 43/4 within the first six overs. However, a crucial 56-run partnership between Salman Ali Agha and Usman Khan revitalized the innings. Agha remained unbeaten on 63, but his efforts were ultimately insufficient as Pakistan fell short in the final overs.

Despite this loss, Pakistan had already secured their place in the final. They are set to face Sri Lanka once again in the championship match on Saturday, November 29.

Kane Williamson, the celebrated former captain of New Zealand, has officially announced his retirement from T20 International cricket. This significant decision marks the end of an era for the Black Caps in the shortest format of the game. Williamson, who has been a stalwart for New Zealand since his T20I debut in 2011, represented his country in 93 matches, captaining the side in 75 of them. His last T20I appearance was during the T20 World Cup last year. While stepping away from T20Is, Williamson has stated his intention to continue playing One Day Internationals (ODIs) and Test matches for the foreseeable future. He mentioned that this move provides clarity to the national team’s selection strategy, especially with the upcoming T20 World Cup just three months away. Williamson expressed his gratitude for the experiences and memories gained throughout his T20I career, highlighting it was the ‘right time’ to transition. He believes this will allow emerging talent to gain crucial experience ahead of the global tournament. Williamson departs as New Zealand’s second-highest run-scorer in T20Is, with 2,575 runs at an average of 33.44. Under his captaincy, the Black Caps reached the semi-finals of the 2016 and 2022 T20 World Cups and the final in 2021. He will continue to participate in T20 franchise leagues and his next international commitment will be a Test series against the West Indies.

Afghanistan has unveiled its squads for the upcoming tour of Zimbabwe, which includes a one-off Test match and a T20 International series. Notably, star spinner Rashid Khan has been rested for the solitary Test to manage his workload ahead of the T20 World Cup later this year. The selectors have also opted to exclude all-rounder Gulbadin Naib from the T20I squad. The Test match, scheduled for October 20th, will see a team led by Hashmatullah Shahidi, featuring new faces rewarded for strong domestic red-ball performances. Young talents like fast bowler Zia Ur Rahman Sharifi, left-arm spinner Sharafuddin Ashraf, and leg-spinner Khalil Gurbaz have earned call-ups. Shahidullah Kamal, a spin-bowling all-rounder, has been included in both the Test and T20I squads. This Test marks Afghanistan’s second in the format this year and their 12th overall since their debut in 2018, as they continue to build their Test cricket journey.
