Delhi High Court has stepped into the protracted legal saga surrounding wrestler Sushil Kumar’s involvement in the 2021 murder of Sagar Dhankhar, issuing notices to Delhi Police and demanding a detailed status report. The matter is listed for hearing on May 4, keeping the nation hooked on the fate of the former Olympic hero.

The case dates back to a fateful evening on May 4, 2021, when a simmering property dispute at Chhatrasal Stadium’s parking area turned deadly. Sushil Kumar and his group allegedly launched a vicious attack on Sagar Dhankhar, a promising junior wrestling champion from Haryana’s Rohtak, and his companions Sonu and Amit. Sagar succumbed to his injuries, triggering a massive manhunt.

For 18 tense days, Sushil dodged authorities across multiple states—Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Haryana—before police cornered him in Mundka, Delhi. He was there to pick up cash and had resorted to borrowing a scooty from a fellow athlete to evade detection.

Legal twists have marked the journey: a trial court framed serious charges like murder and conspiracy against Sushil and 17 co-accused in October 2022. The Supreme Court intervened in August 2023, canceling his bail and ordering surrender. Undeterred, Sushil appealed the Rohini Court’s February 6 bail rejection to the High Court, leading to today’s notice.

Sagar’s father had approached the Supreme Court against an earlier High Court bail grant, which was upheld then overturned. With charges under IPC sections for homicide, rioting, and plotting now formalized, the trial looms large.

This case not only tests the judicial process but also casts a long shadow over Indian wrestling’s golden era, as fans and experts await whether Sushil can wrestle his way out of this career-defining crisis.

In a significant development, the Delhi High Court will deliberate on wrestler Sushil Kumar’s bail petition in the Sagar Dhankhad murder case on Friday, February 20. This follows the dismissal of his plea by the trial court earlier this month, prompting the Olympic champion to escalate his appeal.

The incident unfolded in May 2021 at Chhatrasal Stadium, where Sagar was reportedly abducted and subjected to a vicious attack involving blunt and sharp objects. The 23-year-old wrestler died from critical head trauma, while his two companions were left grievously wounded. Sushil Kumar was arrested soon after as the key suspect.

The court has charged Sushil under stringent IPC provisions, including murder and conspiracy, after evidence suggested a premeditated assault post-kidnapping. Bail has remained elusive for the 40-year-old grappler, who briefly tasted freedom in 2023 for medical reasons.

Sushil’s achievements shine brightly: a bronze at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the 66kg freestyle category and a silver four years later in London, making history as India’s first back-to-back Olympic wrestling medalist. As his day in the High Court approaches, the nation watches whether justice or sporting glory will prevail in this tangled saga.

Delhi’s wrestling pride, Satpal Singh, embodies the spirit of Mahabali – mighty and unyielding. Celebrating his birthday tomorrow, this 1955-born icon didn’t just wrestle; he revolutionized the sport as player and coach. His story is one of relentless pursuit, turning raw talent into Olympic gold.

Trained rigorously at Hanuman Akhara by the legendary Guru Hanuman, Satpal exploded onto the scene at 19. His silver at Christchurch Commonwealth Games 1974 was followed by more in Alberta 1978 and Brisbane 1982. Asian Games triumphs – bronze Tehran, silver Bangkok, gold Delhi 1982 heavyweight – solidified his status. The 1980 Olympics saw him battle in freestyle 100kg.

In pehlwani circuits, Satpal was invincible: 16-time national champ, winner of Bharat Kesari, Rustam-e-Hind twice, Mahabharat Kesari, and a slew of others up to Bharat Balram in 1979. Known as Mahabali Satpal, his dominance was absolute.

Post-retirement, coaching at Chhatrasal Stadium since 1988 became his new battlefield. This center churns out world-beaters. Sushil Kumar’s dual Olympic medals, Yogeshwar Dutt’s bronze, Ravi Dahiya’s Tokyo gold, and Amit Dahiya’s international silvers all trace back to Satpal’s wisdom.

Awards poured in: Arjuna 1974, Padma Shri 1983, Dronacharya 2009, Padma Bhushan 2015. At 70, Satpal’s fire burns bright, mentoring India’s future wrestling dynamos with the same fervor that defined his career.
